Can we unlock the schools at start of Feb?

I'm totally supportive of the lockdown BUT by the end of next week, case numbers nationally will be the same as they were at end of November. Hospital admissions are falling again.

Rather than going back into tiers with the shops and food pubs open (where all the spreading happened in December), can we not issue all the teachers with N95 masks (and vaccines for the clinically vulnerable), make all the kids wear triple layer face masks all the time, and just get on with the important job of educating this country's kids in person? Starting again 1st of Feb.

AIBU to ask if we can send the kids back as soon as we hit the case rate we unlocked at on 2nd December?

IABU= no way, the cases will shoot up too quickly again, even if they all wear masks all day.

IANBU = yes, get them back before half term, the only reason it went nuts in December was because everyone was out Christmas shopping and seeing family.

BUT... all school staff need vaccinations NOW!!!!

Rosesaresweet · 22/01/2021 07:48

I am hearing more and more voices saying schools should stay closed to allow other businesses to open. These are people who work as beauticians, hairdressers, actors and restaurant owners.

I would not want to live in a society where profits are valued more than education! I really hope that our Government continues to prioritises education.

trying22432 · 22/01/2021 07:48

Omg yes give them vaccinations give them whatever they want just open the schools and let the kids have a normal life

DateLoaf · 22/01/2021 07:48

I don’t recognise MN as real life sometimes. The parents I know see the sacrifices teachers have been making since before this pandemic ‘began’ for schools in March 2020 and without a proper break and are endlessly grateful to them.
The stress of working from home at the same time as teaching is aimed at their employers who aren’t supportive to parents, not directed at teachers for continuing to do their jobs. And we are grateful for the risks taken by teachers to continue to provide schools open for vulnerable and key worker kids, provide remote learning. The situation is terrible in different ways for working parents, SAHPs, and all kids whether parents work or not but nobody’s blaming teachers or schools- the opposite.

MinesAPintOfTea · 22/01/2021 07:49

@FreekStar

Still waiting for those who are advocating outdoor learning to tell me what 200+ children are going to do in a concrete yard all day!
I said that some city schools might struggle. But that surely some outdoor education is better than children being isolated for 5-9 months. And that is what education leadership is for. I am not a trained teacher, I just see how little ds engages with online resources and badly affected his mh was by the first lockdown (now on camhs waiting list).

DfE and other education leadership should be planning some sort of provision (potentially part time or outdoors) for summer term now - and if things improve then they can revert to “normal”.

@trying22432

And our kids lose them most!

People who continue with these stupid rules will destroy all our lives forever

Do you think it's good for kids to experience a teacher dying? What about a parent?
trying22432 · 22/01/2021 07:50

Omg stop with the drama.... I would want my kid to experience life actually

OwlWearingGlasses · 22/01/2021 07:50

@trying22432

This Covid business is really getting on my nerves now...honestly people wake up! Why do people believe blindly in the media? This is destroying our children's lives and it's ridiculous you can't see it.

People are dying from cancer more than ever suicide rates are doubling and all everyone seem to care about is this bloody Covid that now it's overtaking our lives.

I don't are of the backlash of my post ... I talk to people on a daily basis and people are truly fed up and yet are too scared to say exactly how they feel because of people accusing them of being Covidiots. Well not agreeing with lockdowns not agreeing with the treatment we get in hospitals atm if we don't have Covid it doesn't make you a covidiot. Covid is real but not above all other illnesses and not above a normal life.

People are losing their livelihoods and I don't understand how some of you are still pushing for lockdowns to continue. Unless you are comfortable in you 500k house with no mortgage or unless you are getting full pay package and truly could not give a f* whether are losing their homes because hey ho you are comfortable.

Er because of like the massive death toll and the NHS being overwhelmed...

Oh ffs do you really believe what you see in the media? Have you looked at the cases of flu and cold this year in comparison to the previous year??? Do a bit of research before you believe all this crap?

SansaSnark · 22/01/2021 07:51

We are not a city school, but we have very limited outside space, and most of it is extremely muddy at this time of year.

Outdoor education is very unlikely to be practical at this time of year.

trying22432 · 22/01/2021 07:52

What is happiness hospitals ? Pls tell
Me? The nurses are doing TikTok videos that's for sure

Parker231 · 22/01/2021 07:53

trying - my DH is a doctor so am fully aware of the science. I suggest you look at the statistics - Covid deaths are nothing like the flu.

There is chat up thread about schools not opening at Easter. If that is likely for conventional sitting in classrooms activity, I think it’s time to look at providing some face to face education whilst the weather is good.

Last summer there were people sat in pubs with schools still shut to most children.

SansaSnark · 22/01/2021 07:55

But kids experiencing teachers and parents dying was the reality last term. That's not dramatic, that's just a fact. And I'm talking about situations I'm personally aware of, not things I've read on the media.

Your dismissive attitude and selfishness is absolutely disgusting.

The situation in schools last term was incredibly harmful for a lot of kids for a lot of reasons. But I guess you're too self obsessed to express empathy for other people's children.

trying22432 · 22/01/2021 07:56

Well I'm glad you lot live in a fucking fantasy world where you think this government is doing you good. Good luck with that I just hope life gets back to normal soon as the world has gone crazy

From your posts it's you that needs to do some research. Such staggering ignorance is embarrassing to read.
trying22432 · 22/01/2021 07:58

I am selfish?
How about the ones having people around when we are in lockdownS ?

As I said I am angry that my child cannot have a normal life. I know people who preach the rules and they held Christmas parties....because hey ho they were allowed because Covid took a break at Christmas. Who is more selfish.

I want my child to go back to school and stop being in front of the tv and iPad all day long as I work all day trying to provide him with a roof over his head

SansaSnark · 22/01/2021 07:59

I would rather explore rota systems to enable distancing inside the building, I think with a sensible rota and strict social distancing, we could get kids in before Easter, personally.

It's Gavin's insistence on all or nothing that is part of the problem.

Even in the summer term, we wouldn't have the physical space outside for all students (we already have staggered lunch times partly because of this).

trying22432 · 22/01/2021 08:00

I don't agree with the lockdown and there are thousands out there not agreeing either. Just on MN you get the ones that are so rich that couldn't give a shit if this country burns
