Self isolation question

Daisy778 · 21/01/2021 11:45

I tested positive for Covid and my isolation ends tomorrow. My family took a test on Monday and all results came back on Tuesday negative. They are going to retest on Friday as it may have been a false negative due to exposure time lines etc... what I'm unclear about is if their tests come back positive following their test on Friday, do I need to continue to self isolate for a further 10 days, even though I have had the virus?

Why did they test?
You wouldn't start isolation again if they test positive within your 10 day isolation period.

When you say family do you mean your household family that you live with? They're presumably all isolating with you as close contacts of a positive aren't they? If they test positive from their test tomorrow then I would have thought that you don't re-isolate because that is the final day of your ten day period, so covers the fact that they caught it within that, meaning you don't continue isolation as per the guidelines.

If you're taking family you don't live with then you shouldn't have been close contact if you're isolating, so you wouldn't need to re-isolate anyway.

Yes, I'm referring to family members in the house hold. I tested positive last week (Thursday). My dd and dh tested Tuesday following government advice should they develop symptoms. Both of their tests came back negative which was a surprise. They are retesting as they may have had a false negative due to the exposure timeline. They would then have to self isolate for 10 days from the 2nd test date ( Friday) as the previous test was negative so would not be covered under the 10day self isolation following my positive test result. If they/either test positive that means I would be coming out of my initial 10 day isolation and now have members of my household with a positive Covid test and a legal requirement to self isolate for 10 days again. Hope that makes sense!

So they had symptoms? Do they still have symptoms?
I wouldn't be testing again if they have isolated along with you and no longer have symptoms

Sorry just reread that and was a bit muddled ! Basically I'm coming out of the 10 day isolation and they may test positive from tomorrow. Does that mean I have to continue to isolate with them, despite the fact I can't catch it again Hmm

Yes, they have symptoms.

Who says you can’t catch it again?

dementedpixie · 21/01/2021 12:22

The isolation starts from symptoms not the test result.

OP has just had covid and hasn't been anywhere so will not get covid again right now as its not a new infection if they have all isolated together

You don't have to re isolate should family members turn out to now be positive.
Your isolation period finishes tomorrow

Thank you all for your input. Stay safe!
