I suppose we knew this was coming but it is incredibly worrying and depressing

It’s horrendous. Sadly exactly as predicted and expected but very painful to see.

ThornAmongstRoses · 20/01/2021 16:48

We have more knowledge about the virus than we did last year. We wear masks, we socially distance, we follow lockdowns and bubbles guidances, we have better hospital treatments YET we are still seeing such horrific death rates even worse than last year.

It’s terrifying.

Mindymomo · 20/01/2021 16:50

It’s very upsetting, but cases seem to be decreasing, which is good.

Crunchymum · 20/01/2021 16:50

Based on current numbers, when can we expect to see the (awful) number of deaths levelling off a bit?

(Sorry I realise people here may not know but wondered if its been mentioned anywhere. I'm not watching much news / the press conferences)

Crunchymum · 20/01/2021 16:53

Would I be correct in the the high positive case rates we were seeing recently, mean the death rate will get worse? (Given the time lag between contracting it and becoming seriously ill)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/01/2021 16:53

Yes, this should be the peak, this time. Next week should see a levelling off... or am I a whole week out?

I'm time fuddled, I think!

StealthPolarBear · 20/01/2021 16:54

Crunchy that's what I am wondering too. I don't like to speculate.

ThornAmongstRoses · 20/01/2021 16:54

I imagine we won’t see an improvement in the death rates for about another 10-14 days considering that infection rates have only started dropping in the last few days.

tatutata · 20/01/2021 16:54

World beating... Confused

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 20/01/2021 16:55

Cases peaked about a week ago I think, and I think there's roughly a fortnight lag between cases and deaths, so I wouldn't be surprised if deaths keep rising for another week before they start to fall :(

Oddbutnotodd · 20/01/2021 16:55

This will not be the peak sadly. Deaths lag behind infections.

busface999 · 20/01/2021 16:55

I wonder the same, how bad is it going to get!? Obviously the positive cases have been coming down each day, but there is a lag before some of these 'cases' turn into deaths. Over 1800 now, will we reach 2000 in the next few days? How long before the numbers go down significantly!? It's all so sad and horrible.

Shitzngiggles · 20/01/2021 16:56

Truly shocking numbers.

AKissAndASmile · 20/01/2021 17:00

And worrying news coming from Israel throwing doubt on delaying the second jab.

Randomschoolworker19 · 20/01/2021 17:01

We've only just started to drop below 50,000 new cases a day and deaths lag behind cases by about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I think we can expect the deaths to hit 2,000 a day and stay there for awhile before they start to drop back down again.

ThornAmongstRoses · 20/01/2021 17:02

I couldn’t believe the government delayed the second jab (well I can because they’re they’re idiots) and I think, because of that decision, the vaccines aren’t going to be the miracle cure that government wants them to be.

I think they made the right choice.
StealthPolarBear · 20/01/2021 17:07

Yes so do I, as I understand it. Decent amount of preotection for twice as many people vs even better protection for half
If it's more complicated than that I am willing to learn more.

@AKissAndASmile

And worrying news coming from Israel throwing doubt on delaying the second jab.
A new serological study conducted at an Israeli hospital found that 98 percent of hospital workers who received the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine have developed a high level of antibodies to fight off the virus.

We need to take Israel's lead, they are doing it by the book according to the timescales Pfizer recommends the vx 1 + 2 should be administered.

starrynight19 · 20/01/2021 17:10

The thought of another week or more of these horrific death numbers is awful.

luckylavender · 20/01/2021 17:11

@Mindymomo - cases are actually increasing again

luckylavender · 20/01/2021 17:13

@CuriousaboutSamphire - I thought Chris Whitty said on Monday that the peak would be mid Feb.

That's interesting as all the experts I've heard talking about this agree with the decsion.

Can you expand on how you're reached your conclusion

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2021 17:14

Is this still the cases that would have happened due to Christmas mixing? They warned of a peak in January but didn't think the death rate would be worst yet. Sad

NextWinter · 20/01/2021 17:14

Remember there is also a lag between the people dying and the cases being reported, so this data is about 5 days behind.
