I suppose we knew this was coming but it is incredibly worrying and depressing

I couldn’t believe the government delayed the second jab (well I can because they’re they’re idiots) and I think, because of that decision, the vaccines aren’t going to be the miracle cure that government wants them to be.

I think they made the right choice.

Only time will tell I guess.....

LickEmbysmiling · 20/01/2021 17:15

The virus had not properly taken hold last winter, it's winter that drives it. So yes, it will be more virulent.
Also there is a new strain around which is more infectious so again it's driven rates up.

We were warned cases will increase, and with over run hospital it's more likely people will die.

Sadly this virus clearly isn't going anywhere, I really hope they increase hospital capacity, boost staff for next and subsequent winters!

Randomschoolworker19 · 20/01/2021 17:15

@Sparklingbrook

Don't forget all the parties and mixing for the new year too.

Ch3rish · 20/01/2021 17:16
@Mindymomo - cases are actually increasing again
Do you mean that todays reported numbers are higher than yesterdays? You can't draw a valid conclusion from one day to the next, look at the 7 day average, there's no sign of an increase there

Was that allowed? I didn't think it was-although there were still parties by the sound of it.

time4anothername · 20/01/2021 17:17

@ThornAmongstRoses

We have more knowledge about the virus than we did last year. We wear masks, we socially distance, we follow lockdowns and bubbles guidances, we have better hospital treatments YET we are still seeing such horrific death rates even worse than last year.

It’s terrifying.

the deaths coming now are sadly likely from Christmas and New Year mixing seeding more virus into more places and families. It was very predictable once the more highly transmissable variant was confirmed. By the time the government faced up to giving a better message it was too late for enough people to shift their minds for spending the season alone. It's not terrifying, it's logic from the extra mixing, e.g. the busy trains the day London went into Tier 4, the busy service stations. It's immensely sad and awful I think but it is not a mystery as to why it has happened.
megletthesecond · 20/01/2021 17:17

yy, today was a tough number.
I sadly think it'll hit 2000 before it drops.

Randomschoolworker19 · 20/01/2021 17:18

@Sparklingbrook

No not allowed at all, but people did it anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2021 17:18

the busy trains the day London went into Tier 4, the busy service stations

I had totally forgotten about that too. Blush

Ch3rish · 20/01/2021 17:18

@NextWinter

Remember there is also a lag between the people dying and the cases being reported, so this data is about 5 days behind.
That's not correct, it's more complicated than that as the deaths reported today will be from a range of dates, there's no set time delay.

If you look at the long running statistics threads there is absolutely loads of accurate data

Tiggerdig · 20/01/2021 17:19

This is the result of Christmas mixing.

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2021 17:20

Yes, people just carried on as normal. Sad

Em777 · 20/01/2021 17:20

To compare to the US this would be their equivalent of 9,000 deaths in a day.

Kazzyhoward · 20/01/2021 17:21

Not surprising, given the way so many people behaved during and before Christmas and the New Year.

Randomschoolworker19 · 20/01/2021 17:23

@Em777

We currently have more deaths per million of population than the US.

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2021 17:24

This is Christmas mixing impact?

Ch3rish · 20/01/2021 17:24

@Kazzyhoward

Not surprising, given the way so many people behaved during and before Christmas and the New Year.
So the people who are dying brought it upon themselves?

I thought it was still mainy the over 80s and care homes residents dying who I don't suppose were out ignoring the rules

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2021 17:26

I thought it was still mainy the over 80s and care homes residents dying who I don't suppose were out ignoring the rules

Unfortunately Christmas mixing would be brought in via staff, especially if new variant

flapjackfairy · 20/01/2021 17:27

We have the highest death rates in the world at present don't we ? These figures today are made up of about half of people who died Tues and the rest is a lag from the weekend and Monday apparently. So v sad !

Kazzyhoward · 20/01/2021 17:32

So the people who are dying brought it upon themselves? I thought it was still mainy the over 80s and care homes residents dying who I don't suppose were out ignoring the rules

No, it doesn't work like that. The more people who were socialising etc meant there were more chains of infection, i.e. they in turn infected more people, many of whom would have been following the rules themselves, such as care home residents, hospital patients, etc. I.e. the people close to the vulnerable were more likely to have caught it by not following the rules, not the vulnerable themselves.

SellFridges · 20/01/2021 17:35

Please take some responsibility when talking about data. Here is a clear graph which shows the actual dates of death those reported today are allocated to. You will see that no day so far is anywhere near 2000.

Entirely tragic, largely unavoidable, but nothing like the irresponsible headlines.

Highest number of daily deaths today, beating the previous record from yesterday
herecomesthsun · 20/01/2021 17:35

re the vaccines, they are a) great but b) very new so we are still learning how best to use them to full advantage. They are very new for the experts as well, who will be waiting to see the data as it rolls out. Remember that there haven't been the full trials there would normally be.

That's not a bad thing, it'
s wonderful to have vaccines so early, but exactly how to space them etc is still being worked out.

Velvian · 20/01/2021 17:40

Seeing more reports of younger people dying too. However, I guess that is to be expected with more deaths overall. It is a very tense time. We can't avoid a certain amount of mixing to eat and work and get medical treatment.

The vaccine seems such a long way off.

EekThreek · 20/01/2021 17:45

@SellFridges that's a lovely table, thank you for sharing!

I'm finding the media desperation for the constant, immediate updates really exhausting. When you look at the data by date of death, rather than date reported, it's a much more consistent rate. Obviously still horribly sad for the families of those dying, of course, and even sadder that the media would choose the sake of a few hundred deaths, when the actual numbers are headline-grabbing enough.

SellFridges · 20/01/2021 17:50

Why does the vaccine seem so far away? We are vaccinating at incredible rates - 330,000 people yesterday. Yesterday. One day. And more and more centres are coming online every day. At that rate we will have vaccinated one in ten people by the end of this month easily. That’s amazing.
