Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

It has been helpful OP as I now know not to plan anything for a couple of days after.

HollysBush · 19/01/2021 17:07

Yes, I think this is helpful too.
I had mine last week (HCP, aged 43) and had to take next day off work as was up all night with headache, joint pain, fever and chills (almost exactly like the Covid I had in April). But lasted less than 24 hours. I had the Phizer.
Had I known what a string reaction I could have I might have booked it for another day when I could take it easy next day.

Applejack87 · 19/01/2021 17:33

People shouldn’t start scaring people as previously mentioned some could be having the vaccine . My father in law is 88 and had the Oxford vaccine no problems or side effects , my father had the Pzifer again no problems afterwards
We are all naturally nervous about new vaccines but the only way to start having some sort of normality is by having the vaccine

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 17:48

@Applejack87 I haven’t seen anyone scaring anyone. I certainly haven’t done so intentionally. I posted to give people information, find out if we were unusual in what we were experiencing (which we clearly are not) and because I hoped that if it was someone else’s experience they would have posted too so I could make preparations in the event I am under the weather when I have mine.

I dont get how OP is scaring anyone.

Covid makes some people feel like shit then they around 2% chance of death.

OP is saying the vax can make some people feel like shit for a day or two.

How can anyone read that and on balance come to the conclusion

" fuck no! I will take my chance with covid as I dont want to be sick for max two days!!!"

Seriously?

It's like the flu vax. The first time I had it it made my arm ache longer than any other vax. It was nice to know in advance.

Again who really honestly thinks "the covid vax could give me a fever so let's not have it!"

It's more likely to be beneficial to those who can then if possible chose to have it on a more suitable day of the week.

Or is better everyone says nothing and then all the people feeling quite unwell thinks they are having weird extreme side effects.

It's all rainbow farting unicorns and if you dont have it you will die and you will murder humanity. FACT!

There are a lot of anxious people out there that don’t need to hear all the bad side effects of headaches nausea bed bound for goodness sake a lot of vaccines come with side effects
If your concerned speak to your Gp

Applejack87 · 19/01/2021 17:56

Everyone reacts differently to vaccinations it might effect you but not someone else
Any concerns or worried should be addressed to your GP not on a forum where most are not medically qualified

Fembot123 · 19/01/2021 18:33

My in-laws both had it and were fine they are late 70’s.

Giningit · 19/01/2021 18:52

Don’t get this. Tell people what could happen so that they aren’t worried when the side effects are more severe than expected. We’re all adults aren’t we?
Fembot123 · 19/01/2021 18:55

I have health anxiety and when I first clicked this I felt scared but perversely forewarned is forearmed and like @Giningit says I’ll be less likely to freak out that I’m dying knowing those side effects aren’t that rare.

itsmschanandlerbong · 19/01/2021 19:18

I had the Pfizer vaccine and had a sore arm for two days, mildly uncomfortable, but that was about the extent of it, no other side effects. I am struggling to believe what you are saying, but if it's true it should be reported properly.

boxingdayclearout · 19/01/2021 19:36

I had no side effects of the Pfizer vaccine. One of my patients died of covid. His wife stated that "his lungs were shredded to bits". It was horrendous.
On balance a day or two being "bedridden" is a small price to pay.

I really hope anyone feeling anxious reading this thread can be rest assured that the vast majority of folk getting the vaccine are absolutely fine after it. And it's the right thing to do

Theromanempire · 19/01/2021 20:13

I have mentioned how bad I felt last night to my colleagues who are still to have the vaccine - it hasn't put them off as they know they need to have it but they are glad to know so they can plan accordingly and book it for a day where they haven't got much on the day after.

Littleguggi · 19/01/2021 20:38

I had the vaccine 4 days ago with no symptoms, just a sore arm at the site! Most of my colleagues have been fine also. This is very odd what you are reporting OP

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 22:11

@Littleguggi I thought so too, which is why I asked.

My colleagues that had the vaccine yesterday have all come to work bar two, who have been in bed all day with chills and fever, severely aching limbs, nausea and cracking headaches. The ones that did come to work have all got side effects but milder. Some had chills in the night, all have had bad headaches and what they describe as brain fog and they have all been extremely tired.

It does seem (through reading comments on this post at least) that those under 50 are experiencing more in the way of side effects and maybe this is because they have stronger immune systems? I have no clue about how that works, I’m just referring to PP saying along those lines.

I only have a few more days before I can have mine so I will report back when I do.

fiveoldteddies · 20/01/2021 07:35

We are currently still having quite a few off as unwell with it. Because of being forwarned they made sure they did not have the vaccine all on the same day. It seems they are mainly the ones who had covid before ,(but then more than half have had Covid so may be difficult to tell)

I had the same after my flu jab in October, surely it’s just your immune system reacting to it?

I had terrible muscle aches, sore arm, headache and felt ‘gluey’ for about 48hrs. Then it was like a switch was flicked and then felt fine.

pinbinpin · 20/01/2021 08:54

Me too. Get it every year with the flu jab..I can't lie of my side for 3 or 4 nights at night in bed because my arm is so swollen. Still.sleep better than the two time I had proper flu though. None of these vaccines have been rushed.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/01/2021 08:56

I posted yesterday as I had my jab on Monday evening and was absolutely fine yesterday morning.

However I started feeling worse as the day wore on, and my arm became very sore. I was absolutely shattered by 5pm and ended up going to bed straight after dinner. I slept solidly for 10 hours (unheard of for me) and then woke up feeling like I had a massive hangover.

I'm still glad I got the jab though.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 20/01/2021 09:10

I had the Pfizer vaccine and felt rough for a day and went to bed. It did feel like having COVID again (I had it earlier in the year but more than a month ago)
The next day I felt better and the day after back to normal.

Loads of my colleagues had the same experience especially those who had previously been infected

I was not terribly worried. It means it's working basically. What we experienced is the feeling of your body mounting an immune response which is exactly what it's supposed to do.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 20/01/2021 09:12

Having experienced both COVID was far far worse. Laid up in bed for best part of 2 weeks and not really right for a month.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 20/01/2021 09:14

I'd happily have the jab even if it was a full week if feeling fluey. It's not! But I would happily feel sick for 1 week to avoid covid unknown for myself and help community immunity.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 20/01/2021 09:16

I had mine yesterday first thing (AstraZeneca) and not the slightest hint of a side effect yet. Flu jab was worse - achy arm, headache, fatigue.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 20/01/2021 09:20

The takeaway for me is just that if and when I finally get the next dose (not until March they said) then I will try to make sure I am not supposed to be doing anything important the next day.
