Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

@Gwenhwyfar only a few were older the rest were between 25-50 ( working for the nhs)

alexdgr8 · 09/03/2021 17:47

i had the AZ jab mid Feb. was so pleased and excited to get it.
late that night i began to feel unwell in a kind of vague gradual way.
took me hours to realise it might be connected to the vaccine.
then i felt shivery, which is v unusual for me, i can't bear to be too hot.
i took some capsule for cold/flu symptoms which helped.
next day felt v tired and kind of spaced out, disengaged, some headache. bit like i imagine a hangover, never had one, am tt.
anyway felt it all well worth it to have vaccine.
a week-10 days after started having sore and slightly weak arm, radiating from site of injection. right down to the fingers and in lifting arm out sideways, feels more difficult, as if having wieghts pulling down. this has persisted until now. maybe lessening, not sure.
have been surprised. having flu jabs for about 20 years, never noticed any side effects. still thin it's worth it to have covid vaccine though.
thank you OP. good topic. some people need go back to school, do more comprehension exercises. you never said you worked for nhs.

I'm 43 and had mine yesterday, apart from an achy arm I've had no real side effects.

peak2021 · 09/03/2021 17:54

It's a useful thread. So people can plan for the possibility of side effects. I had the option of an appointment on Friday so took that up knowing I have the weekend where I can have extra rest if needed.

Mistymountain · 09/03/2021 18:16

I've been pleasantly surprised. I had my vaccination yesterday and I've had no side effects whatsoever - not even a sore arm. I'm a bit on the old side - 62, so maybe that's the reason.

I posted on this thread last week about how my father neighbour and sister boyfriend all had the jab and were all quite ill and had bad side affects within a few days the only thing they all had in common is that they are all are life long diabetic where you inject yourself .
My father is on his third week in hospital after having the jab in early Feb
He is only just getting the sense of feeling back in his hand in the arm that had the jab. At one point he couldn’t even hold a pen or a cup
However His insulin / sugar levels are crazy 35 one minute then 12 then at one point 3.5 which was when he was really ill which is the main reason they are keeping in hospital at the moment .

I did read something a few days ago that people with diabetes can get worse after affects from the jab
My dad also got Pneumonia within a few days of being in hospital and having the jab so did my neighbours aunt
I will have my jab when I’m able to but I will be watching out for any affects .

26 hours on my arm is a tiny bit stiff and sore and I'm more tired than usual. Have worked all day. Age 60.

All of the people I know that had the Oxford vaccine had no side effects at all. So talking around 20...

What kind of ages? Seems old people don't get many side effects“

Yes, that certainly does seem to be the pattern, which makes perfect sense. The youngest we know, CEV aged 26 had hers several weeks ago. Reported feeling a “bit ropey” for a couple of days, temp and headache. No problems since, due the next in about 5 weeks I think.
Others were all over 55.

hedgehogger1 · 09/03/2021 20:28

I had mine today. No side effects yet...

Parker231 · 09/03/2021 20:29

From NHS website

Most side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine are mild and should not last longer than a week, such as:

a sore arm where the needle went in
feeling tired
a headache
feeling achy
feeling or being sick
You can take painkillers, such as paracetamol, if you need to.

If you have a high temperature you may have coronavirus or another infection.

If your symptoms get worse or you are worried, call 111.

Thought I would drop by again to say thanks to all those that replied to me a couple of days ago to try and reassure me. Jab Saturday afternoon, definitely rough Sunday and really struggling emotionally, felt improvement yesterday but really tired... slept most of the day. A bit off yesterday evening, checked temp and it was 37.9/38.0 so still fever but not raging. Today temperature is normal. Still red and swelling around injection site. My ongoing struggle over the last few days has been more emotional than anything - health and general anxiety, grief, loneliness. I get that not everyone can comprehend how awful that can be (lucky for them), but it is horrible, and the side effects just triggered it all for me, I think things had built up and that tipped me over.

I am interested to hear that side effects for the second jab of AZ tend to be less than for the first, I hope so.

Also hope I can get myself out of this low, with all the mini meltdowns, soon.

TidyOmlette · 09/03/2021 23:28

I got mine last night and had a headache within the hour. I’m NHS frontline with no health problems.

I’d did strangely wake up this morning with my upper lip feeling numb, it’s just irritating more than anything and apart of the headache I’m absolutely fine.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 10/03/2021 09:08

I've just had the AZ one. Will report back on any side effects.

MrsBennetsnerves · 10/03/2021 09:23

I had the AZ yesterday afternoon and DH had it a couple of hours before. I'm 57, he's 56. Apart from me feeling vaguely wòoly-headed, the symptoms kicked in around 14 hours after the injection for both of us. We both had chills and strong aches. Mine was in the injection arm. I had to take paracetamol to get to sleep. The opposite arm is aching quite a lot this morning but that is currently injured due to a shoulder impingement. Apart from that I feel OK so far this morning. I had Covid last spring and for me it had both a wide range of symptoms and a long tail, so while the side effects are not pleasant it is nowhere near as bad.

NC4Todayx · 10/03/2021 09:28

I had it last Saturday and had a bit of muscular discomfort in my shoulder/side of neck - nothing apart from that. I'm 57.

'Normal' to feel a bit unwell after Covid vaccine
Published 7 hours ago

Xenia · 10/03/2021 09:34

I have still not decided despite having notification I can have it so will carry on reading here and elsewhere. I believe the NHS says older people have fewer side effects than younger ones.

I think this Government guidance is a bit out of date now where it says "Although feeling feverish is not uncommon for 2 to 3 days, a high temperature is unusual and may indicate you have COVID-19 or another infection. You can rest and take the normal dose of paracetamol (follow the advice in the packaging) to help you feel better." www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-guide-for-older-adults/covid-19-vaccination-guide-for-older-adults#:~:text=Side%20effects%20%2D%20having%20a,or%20mild%20flu%20like%20symptoms

I think a lot of people do get a high temperature - everyone in our family who has had the jab has for example so it is probably a good idea to expect 2 flu like days after. I don't think high temp is unusual and mean you have read covid 19 although of course in some cases that will be so; just as some people who die just after die of something compeletely unrelated but obviously sometimes jump to the conclusion it is the jab.

This is why everyone on here with side effects should report them on the yellow card system if they want to as that helps the NHS build up a full picture.

Had the AZ three days ago. The following day I had (very) mild nausea intermittently and feelings of being slightly fragile, and then an achey arm at bedtime. I work part-time and suspect that had I been genuinely busy the day following the vaccine I wouldn't even have noticed.

Beaniecats · 10/03/2021 11:10

Pretty much back to normal. Just a rough 48 hours. Can cope with that

AnxietyDrivingMyLife · 10/03/2021 11:20

I have a question- when I have the vaccine and incase I go into anaphylactic shock are the hubs where the vaccine is being given out really equipped to deal with this?
Hospitals, GP surgeries would be but there are so many different places like community hubs now doing this, with staff who may or may not had the training -are they really equipped and knowledgeable on this front?

BIWI · 10/03/2021 11:23

@AnxietyDrivingMyLife

Yes they are. In our hospital, where I had my jab, outside the treatment rooms was a seated area and we were asked to go and sit there for 15 minutes before we left. If you have an allergic reaction to the jab, I presume this means that it would kick in within 15 minutes, so there are staff there to treat you.

AnxietyDrivingMyLife · 10/03/2021 11:24

@BIWI yes I get that re hospitals- my question is around the other hubs which are not in a clinical setting

Pan2 · 10/03/2021 11:36

At my centre, the Etihad stadium in Manchester, they let you know of the medical provision for allergic reactions, and ask IF this is likely to be an issue so they are further fore-warned.
