Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

Fieldofyellowflowers · 19/01/2021 07:52

Yes it is good to know about possible side effects, but these side effects are common with vaccines. Someone laying it on thick about how many of her colleagues have been 'bedridden' with it isn't helpful.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/01/2021 07:53

@Musicaltheatremum

The leaflet you get with the vaccine lists these side effects. I had the Pfizer and was a bit achy, my pharmacist had the AZ and had a temperature of 39 during the night. It's to do with one of the excipients in the vaccine. I'm telling all the patients I'm immunising about the side effects.
I don’t think it’s the excipients that are causing the problem - I can’t see anything unusual? Pretty sure it’s just a normal antibody reaction, which is more pronounced in some people.

DH and I had the Pfizer one and had flu-like symptoms for 36 hours. We would not have been fit to work in a workplace but were OK bimbling around at home. All anticipated from the leaflet (which we were already familiar with because of our jobs).

cakegoblin · 19/01/2021 08:02

I’m worried given how unprofessional the supposedly medically trained OP sounds that this is a fake news thread so I’m going to report.

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 08:02

Seriously? I’m really not ill intentioned. I came on here to find out whether other people were experiencing bad side effects, that is all. Some of the responses have confirmed that other people have.

Again, I don’t work in healthcare in any capacity and have never heard of the yellow card scheme. I have only seen the effects of COVID on the news like most people.

There’s nothing alarmist about stating the facts as I know them. If people want to bury their heads in the sand about it that’s fine, I can only say what I know. Why do so many of you want the facts covered up? I’m quite confused about that. Hopefully you won’t have these side effects when you get the vaccine for yourselves. I hope not. As it is many of my colleagues are a lot more sick from the vaccine side effects than I was when I had COVID itself.

And also again, I am having the vaccine as soon as I can despite the side effects, I have no intention of putting anyone off. I want to get back to normal as much as everyone else.

I’ve just come here to see if others are or have been in the same boat. Yes we know about side effects but it hasn’t been widely reported (to my knowledge) about how badly some people are experiencing them.

I will ask for this thread to be closed if the facts are too much for some people to cope with. Would you rather not be prepared?

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/01/2021 08:03
@CuriousaboutSamphire I’m not spreading “alarmist crap”? I’m stating facts about what my colleagues have experienced and are currently experiencing!

I also do understand that these are all listed as side effects, we are just surprised at how severe they are. It’s not ill informed or anecdotal at all, it’s completely true and factual and if you choose not to believe it that’s really up to you.

I have to wait another couple of weeks to have it done as I had COVID just before Christmas.

This is just a post of genuine surprise at how severe the effects have been for some people. Whenever we have vaccines or medications we get told about the side effects but few generally experience them so it’s a surprise that so many have in this case.
Genuine surprise?

Pshaw!

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 08:04

@cakegoblin I do not, and have never worked in any form of healthcare. I am not, and have not claimed to be medically trained. I could put a plaster on if required but that’s as far as it goes.

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/01/2021 08:05

As others have said, there's a difference between being informative about the side effects and just being a tad disingenuous and making it all sound more than it is!

Theromanempire · 19/01/2021 08:06

Me and 2 colleagues had the vaccine yesterday and we all had an awful night Sad fever/aches/headache/sickness! I haven't felt that rough for years Sad I know it is worth it but it did not feel like it in the early hours of the morning when I was burning up and aching!

jeanne16 · 19/01/2021 08:07

I had the vaccine last Wednesday and have had no side effects at all. I think some people may be exaggerating here.

Vinosaurus · 19/01/2021 08:07

Yes, a group of 40 from work were given the Oxford vaccine (with the rest getting the Pfizer), pretty much all of them suffered side effects as you described.

maadlady · 19/01/2021 08:09

Collegues and I all had the Oxford vaccine last week and have had no side affects

Newfor2021 · 19/01/2021 08:10

@Sparklingbrook

This thread could be very alarming/off putting to people about to have the vaccine.

If so many people that work at the same place have been so ill with it that definitely needs reporting.

So it’s better that people keep quiet and don’t say anything?? FFS Hmm
cakegoblin · 19/01/2021 08:13

@LeSquigh
Today 06:59 LeSquigh

I should have added, we are emergency services ”

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 08:14

@CuriousaboutSamphire I am not “making it sound more than it is”, I have not exaggerated anything that I have put down here at all. I’m sorry if you can’t cope with the truth. As you can see, many others are reporting the same.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2021 08:14

@Newfor2021 not at all FFS Hmm.

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 08:14

@cakegoblin yes, I am emergency services. It is not healthcare related. What makes you think all emergency services are healthcare related?

OP posts:
BigButtons · 19/01/2021 08:14

Fake news- hmm tell that to the nurses at my partner’s hospital who have had to take days off sick because of the side effects.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2021 08:20

I think their swinging the lead. I’m 43 and had a sore arm which means I’m making lovely antibodies, for about 4 hours I had feelings of being under the weather so I had a hot chocolate from the velvetiser and put my heated throw on. Then I felt much better.

My dn had a sore arm and nothing else.

The carers I worked with yesterday had sore arms.

The patients in their 80’s I saw yesterday were a bit drowsy but 5hey get like that after the flu jab. The two 100 year old patients were awake.

If you don’t go into things with a positive attitude you’ll affect the outcome.

atomt · 19/01/2021 08:23

How come everyone at your work has already had the vaccine if you're not NHS or care home staff? They are only just vaccinating the top priority groups, health workers and the over 75/CEV.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/01/2021 08:24
@CuriousaboutSamphire I am not “making it sound more than it is”, I have not exaggerated anything that I have put down here at all. I’m sorry if you can’t cope with the truth. As you can see, many others are reporting the same.
Can't cope? ha ha ha!

Yes, many others are reporting the saem - as these are known common side effects

Really, you don't have to belabour the point. Had you come and told us how you wee feeling after having your vaccine you might have had a different resonse. As it is you are somewhat alarmist in reporting whole teams down with unexpectedly nasty side effects!

Fckingfuming · 19/01/2021 08:25

Op, I developed covid in October, the side effects you mention in your colleagues sound like what I experienced (minus the sore arm). I'd just like to say I'm within the age range you stated in your post, and I'd much rather have the jab and the reactions for a day or two, not weeks and weeks of the symptoms like I had with covid. It's miserable, and I had it mild, no medical help.

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 08:25

@atomt because we are being called at the end of the day to use up vaccinations that would otherwise be thrown away. The people being called that I am aware of (I’m sure there are more) are police, fire and social workers.

OP posts:
WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 19/01/2021 08:26

For goodness sake, calm down everyone. OP has started a perfectly valid discussion. Nobody is saying 'beware' of having the vaccination. More sounds like 'dont be surprised by feeling shit after'. I know a few people who have had it and none said they had any reaction though I didn't specifically ask. My sister had the Moderna one on Sat and was fluey and miserable on Sunday. Wasn't chatting to her yesterday so hopefully is grand now.

Thanks for the heads up OP, when it's finally my turn I'll be ready to take it handy the few days after, just in case I also have a reaction. In fact, I'll be expecting one and then if none happens, will consider myself lucky!

ineedaholidaynow · 19/01/2021 08:26

I was going to ask the same @atomt

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 19/01/2021 08:26

It’s worth thinking about for NHS employers though. A mass vaccination of all staff on a single day could cause disastrous levels of staff absence.
