COVID-19: UK currently has highest coronavirus death rate in the world, researchers say. The U.K. is a developed country with first class scientists and resources. Why is the death rate so high? Furthermore, why does the government continually boast everyday about how well they are doing tackling covid?

The government need to be held more accountable because their handling of covid is a complete disaster.

...and we are an island!!

Absolutely shocking. We are led by buffoons who rode the wave of the "Get Brexit Done" nonsense but had no interest in actually running the country. Blame lies with them but also with the little Englanders who voted for them.

So many mistakes. Failure to lock down our borders or test/quarantine visitors arriving in the country; the fiasco with care homes; locking down too late each time; Cummings; ignoring advice from scientists; putting someone with a track record or failure in charge of track and trace (anyone remember Dido Harding?); confusing messaging and years of underfunding of the NHS (for which Labour must also shoulder some of the blame).

Of course there are also some idiots who refuse to follow the rules, but that's a red herring in terms of the terrible number of deaths and serious long term health problems we have seen,

NancyDrew1966 · 19/01/2021 12:41

Not all people who farage appealed to were necessarily racist. I suspect they chose to ignore some of the dodgy stuff, compartmentalise it and focus on UKIPs more sensible policies.
Why wouldn't people want more money to be invested in the NHS and social care, a rise in the threshold of paying income tax to £13500, cuts to tax for middle income earners and eliminating tuition fees for certain subjects.
I hated UKIP, am a lifelong labour voter and a remainer but even I can see that would appeal to millions of disgruntled voters not in London or the south east. And tbh thousands in the home counties voted for brexit, affluent, educated but as usual the rage is directed at others.

Mamamia456 · 19/01/2021 12:42

Onlychildandhamster - It wouldn't matter which Government was in power, I don't think any of the others would have handled it any better.

Lots of other countries also aren't happy with the way their governments have handled the pandemic either.

feelingverylazytoday · 19/01/2021 12:45

And we are an island
That's not particularly relevant when things like boats, aeroplanes and underwater tunnels exist. And lets not forget the land border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

@PinkyParrot

I think Portuguese police are armed. Might help persuade people.
Yeah, they are shooting and killing people every day.
mumlurker · 19/01/2021 12:49

So are we going to start investing properly in our health system now?

onlychildandhamster · 19/01/2021 12:49

@Mamamia456 sure my parents in singapore love complaining about their government and the rules there too. but they only have 29 deaths, population of singapore is 5 million, uk is 66 million ). so right now they are counting their lucky stars.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves why we have the worst or one of the worst covid death rates and no politician in our country could have handled the situation better (seriously doubt keir would be worse than boris; at the very least, he wouldn't have acted so slowly for everything and he wouldn't have said dominic cummings was being a responsible father by going to barnard castle).

tatutata · 19/01/2021 12:53

Well at least we're winning at something!

@bevelino

Do you have a link with this info because I can't find it... can only find this one:

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Plussizejumpsuit · 19/01/2021 12:58

Where are you getting this info from? Per 1m pop the death rate is 8th on World meter.

BigWoollyJumpers · 19/01/2021 13:01

Just checked worldometers.... we are not..... we come behind:
San Marino, Belgium, Slovenia, Bosnia, Italy, Czechia, Gibraltar. In the top 20 are: Lichtenstein, Macedonia, Bulgaria, USA, Montenegro, Hungary, Andorra, Peru, Spain, Croatia, Panama, Mexico.

The next two are France, Sweden and Switzerland.

A small number of deaths swings these rankings, the top 25 are all pretty similar.

Russia isn't there, but has an extra 150,000 excess deaths acknolwledged but not reported.

Beware overanalysing statistics. Yes, we are in the top 25, so are most of Europe. I honestly believe, a couple of years down the line, we will all (in the West), be pretty much on a level, and sadly quite bad situation in terms of deaths.

PickAChew · 19/01/2021 13:05

Surely that is the highest recorded death rate?

tiers4fears · 19/01/2021 13:07

USA?

@bevelino - thank you👍

princessandthedragon · 19/01/2021 13:23

Must be because we are under a Tory government then. Wouldn’t have happened under Corbyn 😒

Indecisive12 · 19/01/2021 13:23

The U.K. has the CURRENT highest death rate. Not of the whole pandemic but right now we do.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/01/2021 13:27

Why do people not want to take responsibility for their own actions?

Some of us do - we'd just quite like it if our government did the same, and also practised what they preach

Like Hancock's repeated appearances in a busy park, swiftly followed by an all too convenient absence because he's tested positive (or perhaps just doesn't fancy being questioned?)

Em777 · 19/01/2021 13:34

The government is a function of the people, both are at fault.

The pandemic has shone a light on the individualistic culture that dominates here. Exceptionalism and fatalism have played their part too. I was amazed in early March when most people I knew thought C19 could not strike here (I used to joke about the “magic air”) and then the defeatist attitude early on of herd immunity.

Haffiana · 19/01/2021 13:36

@CherryRoulade

Where are the outcomes of the millions given to Dyson? He was contracted to provide 10, 000 ventilators initially. What has this Tory donor done with the money?
Moved overseas after loudly supporting Brexit.
lljkk · 19/01/2021 13:39

Eventually UK will slip down to like 25th or 50th in world for covid death rate & nobody will generate a 150 message thread about it.

HSHorror · 19/01/2021 13:43

We are no 1 because they are going for herd immunity in the young.
Ignoring that young give it to their parents.
Just the schools has prob created both dec and jan waves.
Jan because kids were all infected when visting older relatives.
Dec because the levels in kids was building and reaching 1k per 100k.

We do seem to also have a very thick population and selfish too. Which means via the schools every parent is exposed to the idiots so noone can be bothered to comply. Especially now too when all restrictions will be removed before younger are vaccinated.

We do have the science but politicians do NOT!!!

But it's very concerning as gov didnt want to lockdown and i doubt they would over sars1 either. We need to invest in hospital rooms.
New isolation wards at hospitals.
If my child wanted to be a teacher or nurse or gp i dont think people are going to want to work in those roles here. They have been treated as cannon fodder but didnt sign up to join the army.

lunalucie · 19/01/2021 13:45

Given that we record our deaths differently to other countries I don't think it's a fair comparison. No other country is stupid enough to record any death within 60 days of a positive test as due to Covid.

It's interesting to see other countries getting back to normal and rebelling against their governments as well. Italy and Poland are the latest to open back up against government guidelines. The bbc report from Wuhan was an eye opener, life is normal there considering the videos that we saw back this time last year.

Icenii · 19/01/2021 13:47

Crap Goverment, crap population.

Watchingbehindmyhands · 19/01/2021 13:49

I don't profess to really understand why things have gone the way they have but it is embarressing and the Government need to be held accountable. One of the richest countries in the world situated on a bloody island.....not rocket science, is it? We had money to throw at it to help keep people home when necessary. We had the means by which to cut ourselves off for all but essential movement of goods and food. We have technology and who knows what else in by far the majority of our homes that could have made that track and trace system truly 'world beating'. Instead, it's all been a bit half hearted and before long, it'll be back to blaming poor people on benefits for moving it all around.
