Happy to have mine wear a mask.

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 17/01/2021 23:40

Isn't it interesting that when I post about prison officers, shopworkers, ambulance staff, all.healthcare staff all wearing masks or even demanding better masks - absolutely no one has a problem.
Even lecturers threatening to strike if they go back teaching face to face WITH masks for all AND social distancing AND ventilation - tumbleweed.

Teachers asking to wear masks? To some posters it seems horrendous, selfish, not effective so don't bother, child needs.to see faces etc...

I wonder why classrooms are the only communal crowded indoor space where people actively campaign against safety measures? And i haven't even touched on ventilation and social distancing measi!

@PurpleFlower1983 @BustopherPonsonbyJones seeing as we are both key workers I don't think that is very possible.

CountessFrog · 17/01/2021 23:45

COVID is rampant everywhere, not just in schools.

It is particularly rampant in hospitals and care homes, where mask wearing is mandatory.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 17/01/2021 23:46

@RosieLemonade
You’ll have to give up your job then. This key worker isn’t supervising YOUR child without a mask.

Can I refer you to last term when school children were the most infected age group by random sampling? Maybe masks are actually working to keep transmission reduced in those settings. If they had no masks it would be higher.

@noblegiraffe do you have that lovely little graph again please for @CountessFrog?

I think they’re a comfort blanket for the anxious.

WouldBeGood · 17/01/2021 23:49

*yes, I wear mine and obey the rules 😃

And once again www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-07-08-oxford-covid-19-study-face-masks-and-coverings-work-act-now

I like my "comfort blanket" backed up by research and evidence.

Covid is particularly rampant in the school-aged population and they were up till Christmas the only group mixing freely with large groups of people no mitigation measures.

I’m not sure why you think that masks not providing 100% protection when performing close personal care means that they’re useless.

everybodysang · 17/01/2021 23:52

Why has mask avoidance become so rampant on here? It's so weird.

I really hope teachers can wear masks.

This one showing that secondary school kids were the most infected subset of the population until schools closed?

Teachers ask to wear masks in classrooms
EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 17/01/2021 23:54

Because masks are a constant reminder if the situation, and people like their little "comfort blanket" thinkin it is all a bad dream. Especially when it comes to children - they must not have any hint that we are in the midst of a pandemic.

Normalcy bias innit?

@BustopherPonsonbyJones thankfully you will never be asked to look after my child!

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 17/01/2021 23:55

@CountessFrog
Giving teachers the vaccine earlier would be better, wouldn’t it? If teachers can’t have it before we are asked to return to classrooms, all children and adults in schools should wear masks and be able to distance. I think quite a number of older teachers will refuse to return if conditions are not improved this time.

sherrystrull · 17/01/2021 23:56
@BustopherPonsonbyJones thankfully you will never be asked to look after my child!
Do you work in close proximity with lots of unmasked people?

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 17/01/2021 23:56

Thanks Noble, yes that's the one.
Interesting isn't it? If you really focus on the school age lines you can see a dip at half term, - then when the rest of the population is flat lining due to the autumn lockdown, school ages are still climbing.
Now I wonder why that is....?

In my sons special school all children wear masks all day in corridors and classrooms. Teachers wear them too. Son says teachers take them off at beginning of lesson to give instructions then put them on got rest of lesson.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 18/01/2021 00:06

My teen wore a mask every day, all day at school last term. I cannot see why it's a difficult thing to ask of teenagers.

Freddiefox · 18/01/2021 00:08

@EnemyOfEducationNo1

In my school we were only.allowed to wear masks in the corridors the Monday after the autumn lockdown, and were not allowed them in classrooms at all. We were even told to tell pupils to remove them in the classroom.
I’d be asking for that in writing. I wonder if they are legally allowed to stop you
BustopherPonsonbyJones · 18/01/2021 00:10

@RosieLemonade
I agree - I really, really hope I am not looking after your offspring! I prefer teaching the children of parents who actually care about me and you are quite happy for your child’s teachers to run the risk of serious illness. Bet your child is in demand when classes are being organised

ineedaholidaynow · 18/01/2021 00:20

DS in Y11 wants masks to be compulsory in classrooms whenever they go back.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 18/01/2021 00:29

@ineedaholidaynow

What about other pupils in the classroom that have underlying health conditions, do parents who don't worry about their child getting COVID ever think of other pupils who may not be as fortunate as their child health wise
One thing mumsnet and class WhatsApp groups have taught me is that some parents are only interested in their own child. The well being of other children in the class or the teacher is nothing to them. We live in a world where some people are selfish.
