Why are the roads still busy on a Saturday night?

It's a rhetorical question because the answer is obviously that too many people are still household mixing.

Back in the Spring there was barely a car on the road.

Honey, how do you know unless you're out and about on Saturday night, too?

ceeveebee · 16/01/2021 21:35

Travelling to and from work in hospitals perhaps?
Collecting takeaways?
Going to supermarkets at the quietest times?
Visiting support bubbles?

Since I switched the TV off before I can hear cars going past the front room constantly, despite hardly anywhere being open.

People were doing all of these things in March and yet the roads were quiet. These things do not account for that much traffic. People are taking the piss!
Chapellass · 16/01/2021 21:41

There were no take aways and no support bubbles then?

trilbydoll · 16/01/2021 21:44

In the Spring supermarkets reduced their opening times but I think they are back to normal now so people can go at 9pm or whatever.

You can work in people's houses so maybe there are some very enthusiastic cleaners and plumbers.

It's eerily quiet round here so I don't have any other suggestions.

Exactly. I could walk in the road any time of day and not see a car. From that to busy roads on a Saturday night.

Back in the Spring 1000s of workplaces closed until they could put social distancing measures in place and because (depending on the business) supplies were low and difficult to get.

The answer is not that obviously too many people are still household mixing.

I think support bubbles accounts for much of it, but too many are taking the piss with them.

Probably delivery vans from people shopping, Amazon, Tesco, Asda etc

HairyToity · 16/01/2021 21:52

I went to see my parents today, as they were looking after my children whilst I worked. Last time I wouldn't have done this, but as we all had covid at Christmas, and have antibodies I decided to make use of their childcare offer.

Perhaps there are more people who have recently had it, and choosing to mix a little bit?

Also I go to supermarket as we have Hadd it, I don't feel need to do fortnightly shop, or rely on online deliveries.

shinynewapple2021 · 16/01/2021 21:52

Very busy here delivering takeaways! Or people popping to the off licence .

Also I think some people prefer to do their supermarket shop when it's quieter.

At this time?

If I was at work in the week and couldn't shop on Tuesday or Wednesday I would go on Saturday evening hoping it would be less busy.

HogwartsForever11 · 16/01/2021 21:58

Where I live it snowed heavily all through Wednesday night and all day Thursday. Today is the first day it's been warm enough to start thawing. No gritters on the side roads and a very hilly area. So maybe the supermarkets are extra busy as it's first time people have had chance to go out.

Redrivershore · 16/01/2021 21:59

Amazon deliver until 10, Supermarkets until about 11

LtJudyHopps · 16/01/2021 22:02

Saturday night is takeaway night surely?!
I drove to pick something up last night that was less than 2 miles away. I probably drove past 10 cars total there and back and that was 8pm in London!
Loads of cars not moving on my road. Roads in the day aren’t dead but are a lot quieter.

Moondust001 · 16/01/2021 22:04

Oddly, lots of people work on Saturdays, Sundays and evenings.

ceeveebee · 16/01/2021 22:05

Set up a roadblock and put a COVID Marshall jacket on, then you can just ask them all?

nevertrustaherdofcows · 16/01/2021 22:08

I've just got back from the supermarket

It was delightfully quiet, inside and on the roads

Redrivershore · 16/01/2021 22:13

I wish now I had gone out to the supermarket if the sound of my car leaving the house stirs people up that much, they could have all twitched and wondered

This is such a shame. We are still in lockdown and should be acting accordingly. We've had covid too but we aren't 'choosing to mix a little bit' because we don't know whether we can still transmit it or catch it again.
HettieMills · 16/01/2021 22:18

I've wondered this. The roads have been packed with traffic today. I wondered where they could all be going. (I live on a main road).

I assume she has windows in her house....?

Not sure where people are but I popped into my town centre and it was really quiet, over to the main retail park to get my click and collect supermarket shop and very few cars. The other little town centre was a bit busier but still quiet. (I had to go there as the shop I needed the branch in town is shut)

This afternoon we drove over to the hospital to take some clothes for MIL, again very quiet.

So I have no idea where everyone else seems to be going.
