Why are the roads still busy on a Saturday night?

It's a rhetorical question because the answer is obviously that too many people are still household mixing.

Back in the Spring there was barely a car on the road.

People just aren’t willing to put their life on hold for it; especially if they think they’ve had it and wouldn’t be likely to die from it if they got it again.

We’ve had local police warnings that the parks are too busy today, on their social media pages and the main police website. It’s crazily busy.

Mousehole10 · 16/01/2021 22:27

We were out tonight, driving back from our support bubbles house. They made us lunch. All perfectly legal.

TheGreatWave · 16/01/2021 22:28

And yes my shop was essential, unless you think it is acceptable for an 89 year old to have no underwear whilst in hospital.

Bloody hell everything is closed and then people are surprised when parks etc are busy. WTF are people supposed to do? Honestly this life is shit,

SquirtleSquad · 16/01/2021 22:34

No idea, I was in a taxi on the way back from a house party just now and was surprised how busy the roads were.

shhsecretsquirrel · 16/01/2021 22:34

@ceeveebee

Set up a roadblock and put a COVID Marshall jacket on, then you can just ask them all?
Ha! Thank you!
TolstoyAteMyHamster · 16/01/2021 22:34

It will be people like my next door neighbours who have been away to Germany for Christmas, came back, didn’t quarantine - I bumped into her in the supermarket three days after - and who now have people over for dinner. At least three guests as they are in the garden smoking. This was a regular occurrence during lockdown one as well.

I do try not to judge but I’ve had two teenagers in tears today because they miss school and their friends, my brother’s restaurant is in dire financial trouble and my dad has a cough and is waiting for test results. But as long as they are having fun...

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/01/2021 22:35

I went to a supermarket tonight as I can no longer go in the week due to homeschooling. Hope that doesn’t upset your perception of me and others who were also out being disgusting rule breakers.

MaxNormal · 16/01/2021 22:37

Oh yay, another "isn't everyone else terrible" judgy thread.

maturinsslothe · 16/01/2021 22:46

Our local boy racers were out in force tonight. Twats.

BellaintheWychElm · 16/01/2021 22:48

I think people have forgotten what "normal" is when it comes to traffic and people and just how much less traffic there really is about. Will be a shock for some when it actually does get back to normal.

Againstmachine · 16/01/2021 22:50

Nice when you can sit in your house not having to go to work isn't it.

SunshineandShudders · 16/01/2021 22:51

It's all the take away and Amazon delivery drivers being judged for daring to be out and about by the very people who are smugly staying at home and managing fine with no need to go out...

Redsquirrel5 · 16/01/2021 22:58

Maybe there is a detour on the road. We hardly ever get traffic past but had two vans and a car go past yesterday in few minutes. The road was flooded at the bridge so they had to come past our house and join a main road two miles away.
It does surprise you if you don’t get much traffic.

TheGreatWave · 16/01/2021 23:02

Absolutely, this article states there is still a 22% reduction in traffic from first week of February last year, and only 10% more than first lockdown. Roads are apparently really busy though.

People going to the shops/picking up food
People visiting their support bubbles
Deliveries
People going to work
People going out for a drive because they’re bored?
Etc.

Titsywoo · 16/01/2021 23:09

I drove to a shop at 8.30pm last night and the roads were empty (this is in a London borough on the outskirts of London - near the M25). Depends where you are I guess.

LegoAndLolDolls · 16/01/2021 23:09

I live on a main road and it seems quite busy. But going to the food shops they are dead, the high street is dead. People arent out and about.

I think it's people going to work as its always busy at 7am

movingonup20 · 16/01/2021 23:18

It's dead here, a lot quieter than normal

Ginfordinner · 16/01/2021 23:25

@HogwartsForever11

Where I live it snowed heavily all through Wednesday night and all day Thursday. Today is the first day it's been warm enough to start thawing. No gritters on the side roads and a very hilly area. So maybe the supermarkets are extra busy as it's first time people have had chance to go out.
Same here. I went shopping this evening because my grocery order due to be delivered on Thursday evening was cancelled due to heavy snow. Tesco was busier than I expected, but I expect everyone was dong the same as I was.

It felt quite warm at 6 degrees compared to the previous few days.

PickAChew · 16/01/2021 23:26

I live on a main road in a city and have hardly heard any traffic this evening.

Reinventinganna · 16/01/2021 23:27

The roads are definitely busier. I travel at 5am and 8pm and they are busier than ever before (even before 2020). The first lockdown was like a ghost town.

tatutata · 16/01/2021 23:31

My sister said that too on her way back from the corner shop. Maybe late night in sainsbury's, dancing in the aisles and dreaming of beaches? Or... Yeah, maybe going over to their mates for a drink. It upsets me because I'm so alone but I also just don't think people can do this any more, and they're really angry with bollocks coming out of the government. If a coffee kills then I'll make it a cocktail...

Clevs · 16/01/2021 23:32

I drive about during the course of the day at work and the traffic is near normal levels. Also groups of people going for walks together that look like they don't come from the same household. Not sure where everyone is going as most of the shops are shut!

tatutata · 16/01/2021 23:37

Haha, best answer everGrin
