Daily new cases update - is there any double counting?

I never had a covid test so I don't know what questions get asked at testing but I am aware that people can get tested more than once.

Does anyone know whether daily update includes only cases genuinely new and not cases where someone has previously tested positive and continues to be positive for a few more weeks/months?

It doesn't because government guidelines say you must not test again for at least 3 months after you test positive. So at our work place if you are positive, you return to work after 10 days you do not have a test when you return or I belive got the next 3 months(definitely a long time) because you can test positive for some time after even though you won't be positive.

I guess through work it's monitored better but a friend (not NHS) got tested about 3 weeks after the first test and was still positive. No idea whether they check that someone has a positive test less than 3 months ago especially on the mass testing scenarios?

@hettyhooverdoover, do you - or anyone else - happen to know how the asymptomatic positive cases are processed?

Are they assumed to be no longer infectious after 10 days?

Are they retested after the requisite 3 months?

It’s all explained in the about the data section on the government dashboard that gets updated daily with new cases, deaths, hospitalisations, and now of course vaccinations

Tests are linked to NHS number, positive tests are only counted once. As @boys3 says, it's explained on the site with the data, here is a link: coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases.

Ok, thank u, so it's by NHS number.

I am not clear why the de-duplication resulted in extra numbers but it must have been correct.

So if someone is now testing positive again after say 8 months, would they not be included again?
