Should we all be wearing face shields too ?

Does anyone know if we should ? I do and look pretty silly. I've read a bit of stuff online that it's a good idea. I think Dr Fauci said so for example. How does everyone else feel about it ? Do you wear one ?

Just to add - I mean face shield and mask. Not just a face shield in its own as that's useless.

Not as useless as the one I saw an old dear wearing in the supermarket today - as a visor in the sense of keeping the sun out of her eyes, with nose and mouth entirely open to the the wind ...
username1909 · 14/01/2021 02:52

@Twillow oh dear oh dear. I saw a woman in the supermarket holding up a tissue covering her moth and nose as a face mask. I was shocked and angry and quite frankly, disgusted. It's not that hard do put on a face mask.

They are next to useless apparently but if it would make you feel better or safer you could wear one x

username1909 · 14/01/2021 06:28

@Ginfilledcats oooh where did you hear that ? Surely they protect your eyes from droplets ? If they're useless why do all docs on covid wards wear them ? I'm referring to wearing a mask and a shield. Surely that gives more protection in a supermarket than just a mask? If someone sneezes or coughs near you.

She should have been refused admittance.

PrimeraVez · 14/01/2021 06:56

I was in A&E with my 4 year old the other day (non-COVID related) and he sneezed inches away from the doctor's face whilst she was examining him. I'm sure she was very grateful that she was wearing a visor in addition to a mask!

LynetteScavo · 14/01/2021 07:01

The stop you inadvertently touching your eye. We were given them at work to use with a mask if we need to administer first aid. If I saw someone in a supermarket wearing one I might think or a family member or they were particularly vulnerable but I wouldn't think they look silly.

username1909 · 14/01/2021 07:27

@LynetteScavo great name by the way. I wear it wherever I go. I have been for months. I now don't feel safe without it. I'm clinically vulnerable, but not extremely if that makes sense. I kind of wish my husband did too, but he won't haha. I think it does give extra protection but I was wondering if there is any info on the contrary. My DD also has a little hat with a face shield on it as she's too young to wear a mask. I cover her pram with the rain cover whenever we go as it just feels safer that way. Can't wait for this to be over !!

I think we should all just go for full on hazmat suits. Then we can get back to normal.

jewel1968 · 14/01/2021 08:07

Not that useless apparently www.google.com/amp/s/medicalxpress.com/news/2020-06-shields-masks-covid-.amp
This article suggests that the mask protects you and the mask protects others. Together they protect more ....

username1909 · 14/01/2021 08:56

@PicsInRed hahah this is the answer surely

Visor and mask best protection. Some people just wear visors and I think you might as well not bother!

You can if you want. Won't stop you catching a virus though. Unless you stay in one of those bubbles they used to keep auto immune children in to prevent them from catching infections you could still catch coronavirus or other viruses. Actually I believe there were children who caught viruses even when kept in such isolated environments. Speculated that viruses were transmitted through the food the children were given.

None of these social distancing measures work.

username1909 · 14/01/2021 11:08

@Billie18 you really think so? So you don't think masks help at all ? Why ?

OP posts:
Calmandmeasured1 · 14/01/2021 11:11

Well hairdressers have to. Equally you could wear a mask and glasses (or a mask and goggles 😁). Obviously the visor does provide additional protection for your eyes.

I don't think we should all be wearing them. It would be a nightmare trying to persuade anti-maskers to do that too...more protests etc.

Rosehip10 · 14/01/2021 11:23

Visors are for splash protection only (in addition to the masks) - which you could indeed get when treating a patient in hospital - unlikely in the supermarket.

There is no scientific evidence that they do.

This morning I noticed something that could be used in a video to illustrate what an ineffective barrier they are. Freezing cold morning here. Cold enough so that the water vapor in everyone's breath was condensing into a visible cloud of exhaled breath in a way that I'm sure everyone is familiar. Those wearing masks had the same amount of visible cloud emitting as they breathed. Only difference was it was projected upwards and sideways in less predictable directions.

This will be happening wherever people are wearing masks. The only difference being you won't be able to see it. Obvious really. No idea where people think their exhaled breath goes when they wear a mask.

username1909 · 14/01/2021 13:38

@Billie18 but it has been filtered through the mask though, even if it comes out. If nothing came out of the mask, you would literally suffocate. I can see how you would come to that conclusion but I don't think it's correct. If two people wear a mask the breath they'd be exchanging would be minimal and it would be filtered through the mask anyway. Why would doctors wear masks then if they don't protect ?

I'm up for this. Not only can we socialise but it would take all the pressure out of looking presentable. Hopefully there would be a summer version too.

Worth considering since Covid-19 can enter through the eyes...
