Covid Scotland - new restrictions tomorrow? 13/01.

I’m trying to think what “new” restrictions they’re talking about that could be brought in tomorrow?

We can’t see anyone, we can’t do anything, we can’t go anywhere.

What exactly is there left to crack down on? What secret activities are there going on that I’m currently unaware of that are causing such a huge rise in infection and death rates in 100s of people?

I dread to think but just from being out for a run or walk at lunchtimes there is still a lot of people going places. The traffic doesn't seem to have dropped at all round here. Lots of pensioners on the road and construction / trades vans. Traffic going in and out of the retail park was quiet so they're not all going there for their essential shopping! The local coffee shops are really creating queues and gatherings of people waiting for takeaway so I can see that changing although I don't know how they'll separate coffee shops from restaurants and traditional takeaway type places that would normally offer this service.
If they ban us from meeting other people outside I'll probably cry!

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2021 09:16

Recycling/waste needs to continue, it's low risk and an essential service. Leads to fly tipping and potential health hazards if closed.

I don't think construction is an issue. It's mostly outside and even work in people's homes the risk can be reduced easily - most people don't hug their builder or flooring contractor for example.

Agree that takeaways being delivery only is unfair on people outside the reaches of Deliveroo etc and I don't think it's high risk. If people are 'accidentally' hanging round takeaways and coffee shops at the same time as their friends and family, they need to stop doing this, rather than cutting down the whole service.

We usually collect when going to the supermarket. We don't use any of Deliveroo, Uber Eats or Just Eats out of principle and it's too expensive and takes too long anyway.

It would be better to focus on areas where illegal or unnecessary close contact is actually happening. People travelling to offices when they can WFH for example.

reprehensibleme · 13/01/2021 09:19

FindHungrySamurai, I would have thought the reason for takeaway being banned would have been the work conditions of kitchen staff but that doesn't appear to be the thinking behind it, more that customers are contracting the virus when they go to pick up their takeaway. I have seen the daft queues outside the likes of Costa but don't think most small local takeaways have this problem and it seems, well, unfair to penalise them. As to construction, DNephew's site was closed on Monday due to a case - sites (and many construction workers!) aren't great at hygiene!

I know where this bloody virus is transmitting, its not standing outside Costa or walking though the park with your pal , it's in bloody workplaces, the ones that are open. I'm working in a supermarket and the staff dont social distance. Nor do staff in other supermarkets or stores still open that I go to.
And I can imagine it's the same in any offices or call centres still open.
Sure, all these places are covid compliant. But people stand closely together talking, and that's how its spread. In my work the management are the worst offenders. And I'm talking a big store.

How to police it is another headache.

charliespie · 13/01/2021 09:31

An issue here though is Costa itself is a workplace. The last time I went through the drive thru for a coffee, last week there was 4 staff huddled up in the immediate area by the window. One making coffee, one doing payment, one on the till and another just there. When they first opened back up last year the coffee machine and till people were on the things the nearer the shop floor to keep distance. It's all been forgotten about.

ssd · 13/01/2021 09:35

Exactly @charliespie, in the workplace ,just like I said

Honeydukesmum · 13/01/2021 09:37

We’re not Scotland but several of the local takeaways opted to ‘close’ this week as felt safest thing to do.
On BBC it said John Lewis have decided to stop click and collect.
Makes you wonder if they’ve had a heads up and want to self close before being told to .. better PR.

Morgan12 · 13/01/2021 09:47

I think its only takeaways for the chop today. I've not heard a thing about sport or construction.

raviolidreaming · 13/01/2021 09:48

I completely agree.

Does anyone know what the new restrictions are yet? I have searched on Google, just can't see anything.

mumwalk · 13/01/2021 09:54

Click & Collect, takeaways & there are some industries still open that were shut in March.

charliespie · 13/01/2021 09:56

No, it hasn't been announced yet. Anything said is just guesswork at the moment.
ssd · 13/01/2021 09:56

I think closing takeaways is very unfair on small businesses.

rooella · 13/01/2021 09:57

Some of the construction sites have people travelling from all over Scotland working closely together. There's few toilets & small canteens. Many jobs difficult to socially distance. Watching from my office many of the workers don't wear masks when working closely. People sharing vans. Although the building federation said only 1 outbreak in Scotland so far.

Does anyone no time of announcement?

MaxNormal · 13/01/2021 09:59

FFS. It's transmitting in hospitals and care homes. In the homes of people who are continuing to see friends and relatives indoors.
This is performative bollocks that will cause huge financial harm and remove the small pleasures keeping many people going in the grimmest months of winter after what has been a really difficult year. Just for fucking show.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:04

I think it will be a ban on take aways, meeting up outside unless in a bubble, ban on click and collect and hopefully a ban on unnecessary construction which will in return reduce keyworkers children in schools reducing school numbers.

rooella · 13/01/2021 10:04

*know

SilkyMoonfaceandTheSaucepanMan · 13/01/2021 10:05

Thank you @charliespie and @DumplingsAndStew,

What is it with the construction? How likely would that be, I wonder?
If they cancel click and collect for takeaways, I guess that includes drive through?

DumplingsAndStew · 13/01/2021 10:09

I'm not sure about drive through. In my opinion, it offers a degree of protection that collection doesn't, in that you stay in your vehicle.
charliespie · 13/01/2021 10:10

McDonald's has stopped takeaways and are only doing drive thru and delivery. I thought it might be along the same lines for Costa/Starbucks etc. Then again, if Sturgeon was in the Costa DT the other day she would definitely be closing them. They were all far too close to each other.

emmathedilemma · 13/01/2021 10:21

Article from the BBC today including a graph of the top 5 places attended by people who've contracted it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-55639316

emmathedilemma · 13/01/2021 10:23

Although I'm not sure how people have contracted it by eating out over the last couple of weeks because everywhere has been shut?

speedtalker · 13/01/2021 10:28

From what I see, new cases are going down. They're making great progress in vaccinating care homes, over 80s and soon o70s.
I think NS should be pushing us on, keeping us doing what we're doing, encouraging us to stick at it, keeping us positive, keeping us exercising, showing sympathy. It's like the awful mile 22 of a marathon.
Creating more restrictions, in my opinion, will do huge morale damage and have very little impact on cases. NS herself said there was cause for optimism. There's just such a lag on impact with each restriction. Oh, it's all so sad.

mumwalk · 13/01/2021 10:29

Are they not also saying it will spread in schools as there are too many children going in? They might have to do something to help reduce the number of people who have to claim places. In our school there are children of non-critical workers attending.
