I know nothing about it so would like to be informed.

It's too early to really say. Research is underway.

None of those research projects is looking at vit D deficiency.

One study is looking at impact of Covid on refugees and non EU immigrants. I would think that this then perpetuates the idea that ethnic minorities are from lower socioeconomic groups and live in poor housing conditions. I’m actually quite disappointed in the research projects.

Enough4me · 15/01/2021 01:33

I picked that as an example, other research is taking place, but it takes time to set-up parameters, collate, and analyse data. The initial findings on VitD are not clear cut.

I read a different article in the lancet

There needs to further study into this. But there’s no harm in taking vit D3 as a precautionary measure esp as we are in winter lockdown.

And this one

Again, there is no such thing - biologically - as race. The term ‘BAME’ an incredibly offensive term when used in this way. When using it in a sentence, try replacing it in your head with ‘non-white’ - doesn’t sound great, does it? It just isn’t appropriate in this context to lump together people from all over the world, who have nothing more in common with one another than the fact they aren’t white. It’s scientifically meaningless, with the exception of the impacts of structural racism.

DianaT1969 · 15/01/2021 08:44

Enough4me - it really isn't too early to tell if Vitamin D deficiency is the cause. The UK has taken a wilful stance against investigating vitamin D and Covid-19 in a thorough and timely way. By timely, I mean back in April. Not sending out boxes of vitamin D to the vulnerable almost a year later with no clear public health message on dosage required to get levels up from a low starting point. 400iu simply doesn't cut it.

Rummikub · 15/01/2021 11:47

There is such a thing as race. And there are physiological differences and differing susceptibilities in health.
I’m not sure why being colour blind is ok. It isn’t.
I dislike BAME and BME.

Completely agree. Why is it being ignored when there is compelling evidence?
orangenasturtium · 15/01/2021 12:55

There are lots of studies into vitamin D and COVID 19, including a study at QMUL to examine whether it reduces the risk and severity of COVID 19 and a study at Guys and St Thomas' that is looking at ethnicity, vitamin D status and COVID19 (amongst other factors). It is being investigated but studies take time.

That’s good to see
Can see that the uk study is not recruiting yet.

Sorry for upsetting people re sub species comment but I was referring to the distinct anthropological differences in the human race. We are all human but carry specific adaptations to to environment we have evolved in.
Genetically we are all almost the same, but we have coding for variation in skin colour, height, eye colour the list is endless. Somewhere in the coding is something that makes Covid cause a specific reaction in the immune system. A very simple example is Sickle Cell disease. Those who have or carry the disease are not effected by the malaria parasite, this is probably due to the shape of the red blood cells in sufferers (simplified).
It is possible that we are going to find that in a small percentage of the population carry a genetic variation that produces an over reaction of the immune system to either Covid itself or to a by-product of the infection. We already know that something very similar is responsible for diabetes, heart disease and periodontal disease. There is increasing evidence that these diseases predispose to severe Covid. They are also more frequently seen in Asians in this country but not necessarily in their ancestral countries.
Changes in diet, climate and behaviour are all possible causes and maybe the pandemic will be a starting point for further serious study into this problem. It’s far too simple to blame socio economics.

^^ agree

There are multiple ongoing studies in the UK (you need to click through the pages). The QMUL study is already under way and the Guy's study is an observational study using data collected from patients in South East London from January 2020, so they aren't actively recruiting, they are using data from patients being treated at their trust's hospitals.
Rummikub · 15/01/2021 14:41

Ok. I did scroll down
I’ll have a proper look.

orangenasturtium · 15/01/2021 15:01

You can filter by country/region @Rummikub. I just searched for all current clinical trials so you could see all of them.

Rummikub · 15/01/2021 15:06

@orangenasturtium

Thank you for that
Just found this

orangenasturtium · 15/01/2021 15:21

You're welcome Rummikub!

That link is the Guy's study I mentioned before.

I find it hard to believe that the NHS is systemically racist as there are so many ethnic minorities working in the NHS. Both my dentist and GPS are from Pakistan and India respectively. Is there any factual evidence that the NHS is a racist organisation? If so, such a grave and serious accusation needs a public inquiry once the dust has settled over Covid.

OP posts:
HijabiVenus · 15/01/2021 16:32

What has been the principle ethnicity of house/street party goes in London, either warned or fined by the Met? Rhetorical question as i have been advised by family member but it's not disconnected.....

sofiaaaaaa · 15/01/2021 16:34

Well that’s a weird post OP. In fact, it’s quite nasty as you’re attempting to silence people sharing their experiences. You don’t think ethnic minorities can be racist towards other ethnic minorities? “Bame” is not a hive mind, seems that you struggle to understand that. I’m sure black women would love an investigation into why they’re more likely to suffer complications in pregnancy/childbirth, no one high up cares enough to open an enquiry though.

Is there any factual evidence that the NHS is a racist organisation?

Switch racism for sexism.

CaveMum · 15/01/2021 16:39

The COVID Zoe app did a basic study (note - not a clinical trial) on supplements and their data showed that taking Vitamin D did appear to modestly benefit women more than men. However they did point out that as it was a self-reporting study it was possible that the men were just not as accurate at reporting what they had taken.

covid.joinzoe.com/post/vitamins-reduce-covid-risk

sofiaaaaaa · 15/01/2021 16:39

As in - you know that historically men are treated better than women, but it would be difficult to produce “factual evidence” to add credence to every woman’s experience. It doesn’t mean they’re lying. It doesn’t mean that you get to immediately shut them down.

GypsyLee · 15/01/2021 17:04

It's the bllod and not enough vit D, so I was told.
I'm white BAME, staying in, and taking tons or vit D.
The main problem to be emerging are BAME saying they won't be immunised, myself included.
