Why do people think we'll need restrictions after all over 18s have been vaccinated?

I keep reading on here but also heard in mentioned on the news, about restrictions will potentially still be needed into next year. Considering the plan is to vaccinate all over 18s by autumn this confuses me. Could someone please explain.

The more people vaccinated the more confused the virus gets, then it mutates. Chris Whitty discussed this the other day. We are blocking it so it will change itself to bypass our block. It's the same as flu in that they have a different vaccination each year based on what strain of the virus will be predominant.

I’ll wear a mask in public places in winter next year if that’s sensible to do. Not sure I will do anything more than that though.

Mousehole10 · 12/01/2021 10:42
@Mousehole10 nothing crazy just maybe things like in care homes if you have a cold wear a mask or don’t go and I think better sick pay support so if you were sick instead of going in and spreading germs because you can’t afford to lose pay you stay home.
BUT all that said it’s never that easy or simple.
Yes that’s all sensible, I think most people would comply with things like that if it means no more proper restrictions.

I'd like to see a message that adults and with contagious viruses should not go into work and school during their infectious period. Germany seems to manage this much better so their rules could be used as a model. Humans don't need to be exposed to hundreds and hundreds of viruses to build and maintain good immunity when a handful will achieve the same effect, we don't need to continue helping all these viruses to propagate.

MRex · 12/01/2021 10:43

(Should say adults and children)

@Mousehole10 - it's not spreading doom. It's what Chris Whitty said.

Haenow · 12/01/2021 11:01

When people say ‘restrictions’, I was thinking that masks on public transport and in hospitals are probably going to be a longer term need, especially in winter. I sincerely hope it won’t be more restrictive than practicing good hygiene and wearing masks in certain (high risk) places.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/01/2021 11:04

This coronavirus is thought to be somewhere between flu and measles in terms of producing effective mutations. There are good reasons to think we won't need to adapt with the same speed as we do with the flu virus to produce vaccines.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/01/2021 11:05

Not all the vulnerable will be vaccinated. Under 18s who are ECV for example.

charliespie · 12/01/2021 11:06

It is reflective of a small group on this site who are doom mongering and revel in negativity.

Eh?

Source is Chris Whitty. Chris medical officer.

Is it bollocks a small group on this site Hmm

Some people love catastrophising. Some because they like the drama, some because they want an end to all restrictions now so need to " prove" that masks/social distancing/restrictions dont work.

It was really interesting watching a whole group of posters on here move seamlessly from "you cant control a virus, how do you know there will ever be a vaccine " to "you cant control a virus, the vaccine wont work/I dont want to be vaccinated".

FourTeaFallOut · 12/01/2021 11:08

Well, that's true now but research is underway to assess the suitability of vaccines for under 18s. I saw somewhere on an American paper that we might have this unravelled within the year. Hold on, I'll see if I can find it again.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/01/2021 11:12

@FourTeaFallOut don't worry about finding it. The OP was specific about over 18s and the ECV children get forgotten.

Add to that that some people are positively revelling in the pandemic. How many people even knew we had Chief Medical Officers etc? Who cared? I wonder how many will be wanting to go back to the obscurity from whence they came. What about all those raking in profits from the pandemic? They'll not be that keen on things going back to normal. And "alas" some politicians might be hoping that the drama continues because if people actually start thinking again, they might not hang on to their jobs for very long....
Catty1720 · 12/01/2021 11:21

I didn’t mean my opinion to be naive or dangerous and I wouldn’t want to worry anyone but realistically I think lessons need to be learnt. I only meant with mask the restrictions on seeing people and work etc cannot go on once we are in control

thefallthroughtheair · 12/01/2021 11:22

Because at the moment, it seems easier to impose restrictions than it is to actually provide enough NHS beds and staff for our increasingly elderly and unhealthy population. Of course that's completely short-termist because we'll never sort out NHS capacity if we keep reducing tax intake, but hey ho.

Almostslimjim · 12/01/2021 11:31

Isn’t there a stat that 40% of people intend to refuse the vaccine? That is too many for there to be heard immunity.

I'm not sure on the exact figure, but yes, we are having a lot of refusals.

lightand · 12/01/2021 11:41

The figures are the same or higher in some other countries too. @Almostslimjim. By "we", do you mean the medical profession?

RaspberryCoulis · 12/01/2021 11:43

@movingonup20

Restrictions may be light touch eg more recommendations for the clinically vulnerable or wearing masks when you have a cold (eg like in the Far East).
They can "recommend" all they like but I'm not wearing a bastarding mask one second longer than i'm legally obliged to.

Already planning a ritual burning of the awful things.

Almostslimjim · 12/01/2021 11:44

yes I do.
Almostslimjim · 12/01/2021 11:45

As in we at the trust I work for.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/01/2021 11:48

We have the highest levels of vaccine confidence in Europe but I wouldn't be surprised if there are pockets of refusers in the country. When I read the comments section of our local paper it feels like I'm in the anti-vax capital.

Zogstart · 12/01/2021 12:05

Restrictions will be dropped once the pressure on the NHS is relieved. Up till now the narrative the government have been pushing is the risk to each of us as an individual. This is purely to get us to comply. They don’t care about an individual getting sick, more the fact that they can’t allow us all to get it at once. Yes there will be people who either cannot have the vaccine or refuse it, since the virus will still be circulating among children these people will still be at risk of getting sick but as long as there are beds for them, there won’t be restrictions to stop this. It will become like the flu, manageable. And hopefully the NHS will have better funding going forward to cope with bad flu and covid years.
