A year ago today, the Chinese state media reported the first known death from an illness caused by the virus.

A year Shock

It been both no time at all, and a terribly slow year

CrunchyCarrot · 11/01/2021 21:22

It's been unrelenting. If there's one word I never want to hear again, it's Coronavirus! I thought Brexit was bad. Hmm

PleaseDontGo · 11/01/2021 21:27

Wow and little did we know what was about to happen Sad

RhubarbTea · 11/01/2021 22:04

I knew then it was going to be bad, but I had no idea how bad. I can't believe it's been a year!

tinselearedcow · 11/01/2021 22:12

I wonder when the first thread about it on MN appeared, this is the first one I remember - OP got a right telling off!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3800261-to-have-shared-this-link

and then this one

umpteennamechanges · 11/01/2021 22:26

I started a thread on the 26th under another username (so later than those two).

The amount of denial, even in the face of me backing up everything with links to medical journals/experts/etc was fairly astonishing

Flowers for everyone who has lost someone.

Isolatedizzy · 11/01/2021 22:43

Umpteen I followed your thread at the time, I was watching the news and becoming increasingly worried.
Your thread was so informative, I bought the correct strength hand gel, had my family washing their hands as they came through the door and had a well stocked pantry!
So thank you! Thanks

What a bizarre time it was (is)!

I just hope we don't have another pandemic in our lifetime because the concern is these things will happen more frequently and we never know when we'll get the next 'big one' that makes this look like a picnic.

umpteennamechanges · 11/01/2021 22:48

I've had to talk myself out of going back to all the 'you're just scaremongering, it's no worse than the flu' brigade to say.....erm....still think you were right?

TBF though it's possible that some of those same people are now the covidiots, still in denial a year later.

Weallfloatdownhere · 11/01/2021 22:56

Oh wow, a lot of the posts on the “concerned about Coronavirus” thread linked above have aged so badly! 😳😫

tinselearedcow · 11/01/2021 22:56

umpteennamechanges I read that thread at the time! I will always make sure I have a bit of a store cupboard stash from now on.

There are some corkers on the prepping thread too!
DuzzyFuck · 11/01/2021 23:01

Well none of those threads aged well did they? Confused

Purplethrow · 11/01/2021 23:08

I remember the first rumblings of it , talking about it at work and the awful weird atmosphere that fell over my town . The day before lockdown when suddenly no customers came in and everyone at work just sitting about wondering what was happening.
And now here we are a whole year later, it’s so surreal.

There were many covid deaths in China before this. My husband's colleague in China told him in the November that something strange was going on.
LittleRa · 11/01/2021 23:16

Here’s another one that didn’t age very well...

JumboShiitake · 12/01/2021 07:14

@screamingchild yes of course, as we found out soon enough.

It was around this time though that news started filtering through to the rest of the world.

The linked threads have definitely not aged well Confused

I remember feeling worried. I had a holiday booked for March and saying I'm going to cancel, my colleagues thought I was mad telling me not to cancel it will be nothing. Anyway holiday got cancelled.
I work at the hospital and watching it all unfold was unreal. Turning wards into
Rows of ITU beds. Everyone looking worried.

Isolatedizzy · 12/01/2021 21:57

I posted on a thread in April I think saying we would be in & out of lockdown as cases went up and down and caused total uproar! 🤣

Comefromaway · 12/01/2021 22:13

Three weeks after that thread ended Ds went to London to the theatre. A few days later he developed a cough, chest pains lethargy, headache that lasted about a month. I caught it from him and my asthma was dreadful.

I still wonder now if we had it.

Womencanlift · 12/01/2021 22:55

Thinking of those first two/three weeks in March it is unreal how quickly everything escalated. I remember the first time I saw two people touch elbows rather than shaking hands and thought what the hell was that all about!

A few months ago I couldn’t get to sleep and an episode from Gogglebox from the start of March was in - fascinating to watch the naivety they had when watching the news reports from then and how much things are different now

Comefromaway · 13/01/2021 00:31

Yes it was quick.

Ds’s London trip was Thursday of half term. Things were kicking off in Italy. I remember the following Monday was a training day so he wasn’t in school. Another local school were quarantining their ski trip people. Ds’s school had been to Italy on a ski trip too and I remember thinking it’s OK, his cough can’t be the new virus as he hasn’t been with any of the Italy people yet. Three weeks later we were a bit concerned. I rang NHS 111 and they asked had we been to China or Spain or Italy. When I said no they told me to see the GP as our coughs had lasted so long and were not getting better. I was very short of breath.

A week later the schools closed.
