What retail shops do you think will close down

What stores will be affected do you think

OP posts:
KimchiLaLa · 11/01/2021 12:45

All the ones that were going anyway. That's the thing - those that have closed down were all doing badly as is. Does anyone shop at new look anymore?

BlueBaubles12 · 11/01/2021 12:50

A lot of non-food based independents sadly. I think the high street and shopping scene is about to get a whole lot less varied. Homogeny rules!!

OnlyFoolsAndReindeerWork · 11/01/2021 12:51

I'm surprised WH Smith has carried on as long as it has.

Daisysflowers · 11/01/2021 12:52

HMV? They have been in trouble before so could be again.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2021 12:52

It will be sad to lose any of them, the high streets are dead as it is. Which ones do you think will OP?

BlueBaubles12 · 11/01/2021 12:53

@OnlyFoolsAndReindeerWork

I'm surprised WH Smith has carried on as long as it has.
WH Smith’s will out last us all. When humanity has nuked itself to oblivion there’ll still be a WH Smith’s open selling bars of Diary Milk to mutant cockroaches.

Is HMV still about? Ours closed months or might be even years ago. Sad
fairynick · 11/01/2021 12:54

Paper chase.
Miss selfridge.
My local new look has shut down (fuming because I have a voucher so will have to spend it online soon)
WHSmiths.
Shoezone.
Maybe other Arcadia stores like scaling down of Topshop etc.
Accessorise.

Littlewhitedove2 · 11/01/2021 12:55

Anyone who doesn’t have a robust online presence and ordering / return system will be on the way out, unless they are bargain basement like primark etc.
But this has been coming for years. I can’t understand any retailer that hasn’t, over the last few years put everything into perfecting online ordering. It’s absolutely vital. It was v important before but it’s 100% essential now

Tiktokersmiracle · 11/01/2021 12:56

WHSmith. Paperchase has gone so they're doomed.
I think M&S will go completely food.
I think Primark might teeter because they foolishly will not go online so have practically lost out on near on a year of trade
Possibly the last of the travel agents
Lots more restaurants and pubs.

ChessieFL · 11/01/2021 12:57

WHSmiths has survived until now because it has a monopoly at railway stations and airports where they can charge higher prices than their high street stores. Whether that continues now people are travelling less remains to be seen.

ILookAtTheFloor · 11/01/2021 12:57

HMV still hobbling on, my husband works for them.

larrythelizard · 11/01/2021 12:59

WHSmith is, I think, propped up by their travel arm but given the catastrophic drop in number of flights I wonder if that will cause issues. They're one of few retailers open in my town though so maybe that will save them.

I agree. Any in many places in Ireland where once you could expect to see an Easons, now you see a WH Smith. There is a WH Smith when you land on the moon.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 11/01/2021 13:02

I think shops will adapt and survive in different forms. Not quite as concessions in John Lewis style but you could see two or three different shops in the same address. They will have an address so that they can take returns. So that people aren't scared to order online.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 11/01/2021 13:05

New Look has been circling the drain for a while now. I could see it going. It's a bit all over the place and I can't really tell what demographic it's going for. Monsoon and Accesorize are apparently in trouble too.

Our local town still has a Peacocks. I feel like they've been in administration for years, and am always surprised to still see it open. Their clothing quality seems awful.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/01/2021 13:08

I agree with the fact that the ones that are going were going to anyway.

Survivors?
Zara
Next
H and M group, Cos, Monki etc
Superdry
Schu
John Lewis
JD sports
Footlocker

NastyBlouse · 11/01/2021 13:22

Paperchase has already called in the administrators I think.

Round here it's the independent shops, pubs and restaurants that have already folded, or are struggling, ahead of the chains. I was in central London the other day for a dentist appointment and the number of places that are boarded up (and clearly gone for good, as opposed to just locked down) around Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Pall Mall is astonishing.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 11/01/2021 13:25

Next will survive because they're so strong online. I often order random stuff from them that I'd never choose from them specifically if I were in town browsing, because I can trust it will arrive the next day. I work ft, no car, two dc who sometimes tell me stuff like ''i need swimming trunks for tomorrow.''

GreenClock · 11/01/2021 13:25

Travel agents and betting shops seem like such anachronisms these days. Not all consumers of travel/gambling are able/willing to get online of course - but I wonder how many physical shops can survive all the same.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/01/2021 13:29

WH Smith’s will out last us all. When humanity has nuked itself to oblivion there’ll still be a WH Smith’s open, selling bars of Diary Milk to mutant cockroaches

Grin Grin

My own bet would also be on practically all clothing outlets; basically we'll have high streets with little other than charity shops, mobile phone places, opticians and maybe the occasional bookie

RoosterTheRoost · 11/01/2021 13:31

In the city nearest to me, Zara and Accesorize have already shut for good.

The high street will likely now consist solely of jd sports, primark and Greggs.

HOS8595 · 11/01/2021 13:40

Ooo I like Zara. Hope they don’t shut.

The rest of the ones mentioned I’m not bothered about.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 11/01/2021 13:50

'British Land said less than a third of its retail stores were open under the latest national lockdown and that it had collected 71% of rent due in December.
The FTSE 100 company said 32% of retail outlets were trading on 7 January compared with 73% on Christmas Eve. From 30 November to 26 December retail footfall was 76% of the level a year earlier, 21 percentage points more than the market benchmark. Like-for-like retailer sales at British Land stores that were open were 81% of the same period a year earlier.

"We continue to help our customers trade safely and securely wherever possible," the company said in an update. "Our assets are particularly well suited to click and collect which has enabled many non-essential stores to continue to operate throughout this important trading period.

In the December quarter, £86m of rent was due before taking account of adjustments made to support customers. This amount comprised £42m in retail and £44m in offices. On 7 January the company had collected 71% of rent due comprising 99% of office rents and 46% of retail rents'.

Big pickle coming post pandemic.
A tad more serious than a few shops closing.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 11/01/2021 13:50

As PP posting WH Smith, travel shops have been propping up the high street for years now. The high street stores, don't really make a profit on things they sell, its all about selling space. They have also just done a massive amount of redundancies.

However if Smith's does go that is going to be a fucking nightmare for the post office and British Gas.
