Not sure how Boots keep going when you have superdrug and savers, they seem old fashioned and overpriced nowadays.

PickAChew · 11/01/2021 23:48

I don't think paperchase will survive, this time. Already on the brink and the Web ite is a bit sparse.

littlealexhorne · 11/01/2021 23:52

I agree about New Look, they seem to want to attract those in their early 20s with clothing styled (largely) for those in their early teens

PickAChew · 11/01/2021 23:55

@PicsInRed

However if Smith's does go that is going to be a fucking nightmare for the post office and British Gas.

The post office is a cocklodger now and if Smith's go, it will simply go glom off someone else. I hear Tesco's single...

I think it will be less inconvenient if post offices move into proper supermarkets instead of the basement of a narrow, inaccessible whs.

@heLacksnotluster

This is so depressing. What do people think will replace all of these empty units and when? 2/ 5 / 10 years? NeverSad
Student flats, in our city :(
Blessex · 11/01/2021 23:57

I flipping love Paperchase - am so sad about that. Was my go to for cards. Love their Xmas wrapping paper. Their little fairy lights in all different characters. Their pens. You never knew what you would find you had to have. Damn. Why did no one else like it Confused

PickAChew · 11/01/2021 23:59

I think high street and travel whs are different businesses.

PickAChew · 12/01/2021 00:01

and I Agree, I love paperchase. Spent a fair bit in there, in December, as that's a store we still have. For now.

Viviennemary · 12/01/2021 00:03

M &S. Their packing for online orders is a disgrace.

I think it's more medically orientated, certainly more than savers.
MissEWeatherwax · 12/01/2021 00:33

Post office in smelly basement in my city centre. I can’t see hardly any shops surviving in my city centre.
The student population must be so disappointed.
Even Poundland is closing this lockdown in my city centre!
According to my teenage DD, Boots have good make up and hair care etc.
I think we will be left with supermarkets and budget shops and Sports shops like Nike.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 12/01/2021 00:35

The overpriced chocolates on the tills are the things that keep the high street WHsmith going, but like I said its not about selling stuff its about selling space. All those things that crowd the isles so you can't get a pushchair through, the post offices, the ATMs, the pick and mix, companies pay for their products to be in WHsmith at a premium price.

Added to this, if you have ever wondered why it is so dark in their stores, its because if you look at the lights, most use to have three bulbs, the figured they could save money by taking the middle one out, and then another one. Air conditioning is allowed limited use, but heating is rare (could be the other way round, I can't remember the exact law)

They have done a lot in recent times to save money because they understood that things were changing, they are shutting up shops in different towns. The worst thing Smith's ever did was sell their buildings and then start renting them back, if they hadn't done that, they would probably still be laughing.

Itsonlymakebelieve · 12/01/2021 00:46

Our nearest post office is in a Tesco, the next nearest is in a Spar, the next in a WH Smith and the next in a newsagent that’s not a WH Smith so already a real mixture of places.

Roundlampshade · 12/01/2021 00:47

I am intrigued that the government pays Primark to keep offline. How much and how long does this contract last for?

Ltdannygreen · 12/01/2021 01:12

@FreshEggs

House of Fraser were struggling a few years ago but I haven’t heard much recently.
They are now part of sportsdirect, so no chance of closing down at the moment.
Ltdannygreen · 12/01/2021 01:14

It’s the small businesses I feel sorry for, also hairdressers, etc. Who don’t have online to lean back on.

ChequerBoard · 12/01/2021 01:23

Don't be daft- of course the Govt doesn't pay Primark not to have an online presence! It would totally illegal and anti-competitive just for a start...

But thanks for the giggle, just thinking about how public sector procurement would manage to deliver that! Confused

BungleandGeorge · 12/01/2021 01:45

Closing stores in the first lockdown and just re-opening post covid was probably a shrewd move for the businesses with good online sales. Personally I think there might be a mini shopping boom when vaccinations become the norm. I’ve put off buying several items because I want to see/ try on properly eg jeans, swimwear. I’ve also missed shopping, I can’t be the only one!

I like paperchase too

zukiecat · 12/01/2021 02:25

I'll be devastated if WH Smith go!

It's one of my favourite shops, I haven't been out since Lockdown started on Boxing Day, obviously not any trips into town at the moment, but usually no shopping trip is complete without a good mooch in WH Smith.

It's the only place I can get some magazines and the only shop that stock the book magazines I like.

Waterstones and WHS are where I buy most of my books too.

Adarajames · 12/01/2021 02:29

In London 3/4 of all businesses are at risk of going under is what the various retailer associations / business think tanks have said

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 12/01/2021 05:43

@zukiecat

Choose a different retailer who treats its staff with more respect, those annoying chocolate shit you always get offered when you buy something, they get disaplined if they don't sell enough.

And I am not 100% sure what you mean by book magazines, its either partworks, which they only do up to 7 issues or the random ones
