Hi all,

Just after some advice, I went for a walk with my friend for about 25 mins, prob at 1m distance who tested positive the next day. What do you think the chances are of infection?

OP posts:
ktp100 · 10/01/2021 22:04

If you were talking back and forth then I'd say fairly high, really.

Try not to worry about it, isolate, eat well, stay hydrated and maybe order some high strength Vit D3 tablets.

Fingers crossed for you.x.

netstaller · 10/01/2021 22:09

Without a test it's pure speculation OP. Get a test

puffinkoala · 10/01/2021 22:12

It has a significantly increased viral load, so yes, it is believed to spread more easily outside

Are viral load and chances of transmission the same thing? I didn't think they were.

No viral load is the quantity of infection. Chances of transmission is dependent on the potential exposure to Covid contagious people. The more the Covid positive viral load the more contagious and ease of onwards transmission should the previously non infected recipient be in close proximity at the wrong time at the wrong place!

This happened to someone I know, one walk in the fresh air at a distance.

It generally takes between 3-5 days (sometimes longer) from exposure date to potential positive result so very little point taking a test before this time period.
SunKeepsShining · 10/01/2021 22:43

You need to isolate.
We are being told not to wait for track and trace when we know we are a close contact by our health board. They are putting out lots of stuff on social media saying 2m for 15mins or 1m for 1min, or one contact/hug for any duration counts.

whereisthejoy · 10/01/2021 22:59

What @PinkPandaBear and @Robbybobtail said. Pretty much the only posts on here that make sense.

Delatron · 11/01/2021 07:49

People are forgetting everything we know about the virus.

Again, it spreads with close contact indoors for at least 15 minutes. The chances outside in fresh air are very, very low. So all those claiming ‘oh yes you probably have been infected’ are wrong. Stick to the scientific facts.

Lifeisabeach09 · 11/01/2021 07:54

@heLacksnotluster

Book a test. Don’t wait for symptoms.
If you test too early after exposure, it'll be negative.

I'd isolate for the required time.

This is what we know about the old variant. The new variant is known to be significantly more transmissible.

Absolutely right, however, OP didn't maintain social distance and was with this person for 25 minutes. Spread is reduced outside, not eliminated. I'd err on the side of caution, personally, and isolate.
Delatron · 11/01/2021 09:01

Yes and I said chances were very low not eliminated. I’m arguing that posters saying ‘it’s highly likely’ are plain wrong.

KihoBebiluPute · 11/01/2021 09:22

What @ReceptacleForTheRespectable said.

@Delatron is working on the assumption that the research done into transmission probabilities last year with the old variant is still true now. That is utterly wrong and mistaken.

Delatron · 11/01/2021 10:44

@KihoBebiluPuteAmazing you know more than him.

Delatron · 11/01/2021 10:46

Sorry last message deleted.
Whitty said today outside transmission is low. He would only recommend wearing a mask in a crowd when standing still for a long period .

Amazing you know more than him @KihoBebiluPute

Lottie4 · 11/01/2021 10:47

Marielnternette I know you were allowed to mix xmas day, but you were very lucky not to catch it. My DA and DU spent Xmas Day with their DS and DIL. DS and DIL both positive within days and DA and DU had symptons New Years Day and tested postivie. DA has been feeling pretty rough with it. They nearly called for am ambulance for DU, but he's managed a couple of drinks and a snack now. DS shielding and DA and DU haven't been out either.

DenisetheMenace · 11/01/2021 10:49

Were you wearing masks?(believe that’s the advice if you can’t maintain 2m)
Quite possible. I’d keep away from other people, if I were you and book a test.

beautifullyengineeredspecimen · 11/01/2021 10:51

well I have been sheilding all year and DH going to work and supermarket once a week in a mask. They only have to wear visors at work not a mask. Managed to avoid it all year until Xmas and then DH got it and now I have it. A person at his work had a bad "cold", didnt get a test. DH did not have direct contact with him but entered a room around an hour after him and we think that is how he got it. It must be the new variant. Highly contagious.

Esquire3 · 11/01/2021 10:55

You can have tests now even if asymptomatic they are just at diff places to the test centres with symptoms,I would have test

mamaof2girls · 11/01/2021 10:57

Surely she shouldn't be out if she was getting tested anyway? Or am I wrong?

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 11/01/2021 11:04

We just don't yet know enough about the new variant to be certain what the odds of outdoor transmission are. Given that it is significantly more transmissible, and outdoor socialising was never nil risk to start with, I would isolate if I were the OP on the grounds that it's better to isolate unnecessarily than to spread it. I dont think the OP is guaranteed to have caught it by any means, but on balance I think she should try to act as though she has.

Obviously whether isolation is feasible also depends on the OP's work situation and employer, but in many cases isolation will be possible.

If everyone isolated at the first symptom or after every confirmed contact, transmission would decrease. And the sooner cases go down, the better for everybody.

Delatron · 11/01/2021 11:06

I’m not arguing about isolating. I’m disagreeing with the ‘highly probable’ brigade. It’s not highly likely at all.

Sittinbythetree · 11/01/2021 11:06

Delatron - he was also very clear that every contact is a risk and that we should be staying except for essential things. He also said people should try to exercise alone.

Delatron · 11/01/2021 11:14

Yes he did say that. I’m not disputing any of that.
However, if we had new science to say that outside transmission was a huge risk we’d hear about it. He said outside transmission was low.
