Sorry I’m not sure how to link this but it’s on BBC news.

@Megan2018

They should restrict to key workers/vulnerable only, and the critical worker list needs reducing. We have to send DD as work won’t help us if they are open, I wish they’d close!
I think this is a problem with current lockdown expectations - it’s assumed that people have more agency than they do. The government don’t seem to have realised how much people’s lives have changed in 9 months and expects to just turn back the clock.
stairway · 10/01/2021 11:23

Nurseries can not afford to be open just with critical workers kids in so most will shut and since most nursing staff are women good luck to the nhs.

noblegiraffe · 10/01/2021 11:24

it was a massive kick in the teeth to hear Boris Johnson say the school teachers are the ones at risk so all education would be shut...except nurseries.

Boris never said school teachers were the ones at risk. He specifically and repeatedly said schools were safe. He used the vague phrase ‘vectors of transmission’ when admitting they were actually covid soup spreading the virus to families at home. School closures weren’t to protect teachers.

However it is shit that they are keeping nurseries open with no measures in place. I suspect they will say that there’s no evidence babies/toddlers are an issue, ignoring the fact that babies/toddlers are unlikely to be symptomatic or tested.

Same4Walls · 10/01/2021 11:24

Presumably then many would close permanently. More mass redundancies.

I don't see how this could be avoided if they were told to close. Key worker and vulnerable children wont be enough to pay the wages, building costs and bills. The stark reality is a call to close will be the end for many great nurseries.

merrymouse · 10/01/2021 11:26

@BustopherPonsonbyJones

They should have closed at the same time as the schools. You cannot rely on people using their common sense when it inconveniences them.
What if common sense tells you that you need to feed and house your children?

What if your employer’s ‘common sense’ tells them you should be working.

Please use your common sense and try to understand that this impacts on people differently.

WinstonmissesXmas · 10/01/2021 11:27

Link? Can’t find this story being reported on the BBC or elsewhere as yet.

Agree, they need to close though and remain open to proper key workers, ie those ICU Drs etc who have to work outside the home, not Jill and Linda who want a few hours off as they work part time from home (which has been my experience with my DC’s school/preschool this week). Appreciate there are millions more not taking the piss but there are a lot who are.

Useruseruserusee · 10/01/2021 11:27

Where I teach 1 in 16 people are infected according to the latest ONS survey. I’m sorry but it’s madness that nurseries are open to all in this area.

Haffiana · 10/01/2021 11:27

Starmer didn’t call for school closure

Yes, he did.

Starmer didn’t call for school closure

Yes, he did.

On what date?
Nappyvalley15 · 10/01/2021 11:29

I don't think they should close. There is less furloughing this time and employers are less understanding. Working parents often need the childcare to hang onto their jobs. Especially women.

If they close there needs to be special protection written in law to protect employees that can prove that their childcare has been closed by the government. There also needs to be a special funding package for the childcare industry so it is still in place once this is all over.

MarshaBradyo · 10/01/2021 11:30

Yep

People should think on this. Really not joining the dots at all.

Can someone post stats on case rates for nursery age dc

We need Polka on here who is a very sensible poster on this

Tyranttoddler · 10/01/2021 11:30

Well then good luck to many nurses, doctors etc whose children are in nursery. I'm a teacher currently teaching live online, I dread to think how I could do that with a toddler and hats off to people who manage to work from home with one... Please tell me how 😑

merrymouse · 10/01/2021 11:30

I don't see how this could be avoided if they were told to close.

Or the government could provide them with funding.

The government might decide that isn’t an option, but then they should at least be honest rather than waffling on about understanding employers and common sense.

At the moment they are just delegating responsibility.

SendHelp30 · 10/01/2021 11:30

@MarshaBradyo he did

MarshaBradyo · 10/01/2021 11:31
@MarshaBradyo he did
What date? Last I saw from him was open it was pretty late on.

PinkSpring · 10/01/2021 11:32

Our pre-school won't survive if it's forced to close - and the staff want to work! It's only a small rural pre-school so only three staff and less than 7 children in daily. The risk is therefore minimal.

My DH has to go out to work (supermarket) as he cannot WFH, I don't see anyone trying to protect him....... yet he is in constant contact with people.

If they close the pre-school, I won't be able to work with a baby and toddler at home

MarshaBradyo · 10/01/2021 11:32

Anyway he’s still a pain who speaks without thought on economic impact and I didn’t start with that view.

MarshaBradyo · 10/01/2021 11:34

Thanks but it’s not that important to me.

It doesn’t change my views.

merrymouse · 10/01/2021 11:35

not Jill and Linda who want a few hours off as they work part time from home

The problem is that 9 months on Jill and Linda could be struggling with other dependents and needy older children and a demanding boss.

If the government says that nurseries should be open for all, Jill and Linda aren’t going to read between the lines and assume that they shouldn’t use this help.

Same4Walls · 10/01/2021 11:36

Or the government could provide them with funding.

It's niave to think they would be funded and even with some funding it's unlikely to be sufficient to keep them afloat. Some may survive but a huge proportion will close permanently.

MrsMiaWallis · 10/01/2021 11:36

I love ny garden but its insanity that garden centres are still open.

movingonup20 · 10/01/2021 11:37

Parents who are sahp should not be sending there kids to nursery but many are (no mitigating circumstances) so now they will end up making blanket rules

Flapjak · 10/01/2021 11:38

My nursery has had one case since the pandemic started! Most of the employees in the nursery are young women, the people who will need to give up their jobs if nurseries close permanently will be women. No lets not close nurseries for no reason other than to look like we are doing something. If people are so worried, by all means dont send your kids, you havr that choice, but if you dont pay your fees, dont expect it will be open again when you need it

Beefcurtains79 · 10/01/2021 11:38

They won’t though because this is privileged Mumsnet, they don’t give a shit about the little people desperately trying to hang on to their jobs, livelihoods and homes.
