Chris Whitty in The Times today - don't meet friends and family unnecessarily

"Emergency patients will be turned away from hospitals, causing “avoidable deaths”, unless the public starts obeying the lockdown, England’s chief medical officer warns today.
In a stark intervention designed to shock, Professor Chris Whitty warns that everyone who meets friends and family unnecessarily is a “link in a chain” that threatens the lives of vulnerable people"

Worth noting. I had to pick up a prescription from my local town and was surprised to see so many people - mainly middle aged women, some of whom I know and had always seemed like rational intelligent people - walking around town and chatting on the pavements, unmasked, no social distancing.

Apologies I don't know how to do share tokens.

If you are hearing voices and are struggling then you need to contact your local crisis team.

@MrsMiaWallis

I don't believe the majority of people will have "mental health issues" if they can't meet a friend for a coffee.

Feeling a bit sad and miserable about the situation isn't a "mental health issue".

This has been going on for nearly a year. Yes, it will cause mental health issues.

Nobody is going to give up the few simple pleasures left to them because of your smug finger wagging, so not sure why you bother

What's smug is assuming the rules only apply to other people and that noone needs simple pleasures except the privileged few.

Going out for a walk with one friend is not breaking the rules and it is not assuming the rules apply to other people.
Trickyboy · 10/01/2021 19:37

Ok then. Explain to me EXACTLY how having your new curtains fitted is 'essential' ?

Yes at the moment it IS a choice between businesses making money and reducing the spread of the virus.

My friend wants to be furloughed. There is no reason for the company not to do this. EXCEPT profit.

She has no Covid test prior to entering the customers house. She is in enclosed room (often very warm). With one sometimes 2 adults over 70years old. She will see up to 5 sets of customers a day.

Is that ;

  1. Preventing the spread of virus
  2. Keeping customers too stupid to protect themselves safe ?
  3. Essential?

NO. None of the above. But because it is not 'unlawful' . It will carry on and tomorrow, my friend could very easily take Covid into their homes and place 10 elderly people at serious risk of being very ill or die. There is NO justification. None.

“I wish people would stop saying 'I've seen people walking around outside during lockdown' shock horror! People are allowed to go out for walks and they do not need to be masked the whole time while they do this. “

Wouldn’t do any harm though, would it? London Mayor is urging people to wear a mask every time they go out. There are not many people genuinely unable to tolerate one and for their sake the more people who can who do so, the more protected those people will be. It’s not hard.

Bohemiagirl · 10/01/2021 19:55

I do think that many people fail to realise that furlough is not free money. We need to keep the economy going. We, and today's children, will be paying for this for many many years. There has to be a balance.

MrsFezziwig · 10/01/2021 21:49

he appears to know absolutely nothing more than that which a common or garden idiot like myself can understand from reading figures

That’s why he explains things simply - to get through to “common or garden idiots”.

MrsMiaWallis · 10/01/2021 21:59

All businesses can stay open even the curtain ones.

Very pleased his tactic is working.

This common and garden idiot understands a lot more than the tale that the figures tell.

Thanks for the heads up OP, I won’t persist.

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 22:35

@MrsMiaWallis

The poster who doesn't like Chris Whitty and thinks he knows fuck all has mental health issues which explains things rather.
You utter A grade see you next Tuesday!

My thoughts on Chris Whitty are exactly the same as they were 2 months ago - long before I felt suicidal. You don't lose brain capacity when you suffer from depression.

Aw. I don't know.

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 22:40

What a cuntish thing to do. Totally try to undermine a poster because you've looked at their other posts and know that they're suicidal? It might be baffling, but apart from feeling suicidal, I'm quite well able of independent thought.

MrsMiaWallis · 10/01/2021 22:43

Worth mentioning so you don't get loads of people having a go at you for saying CW knows fuck all (which is a ridiculous thing to say).

OP posts:
SnowFields · 10/01/2021 22:48

@Hatstrategicallydipped

Maybe but he hardly knows it was ‘fuck all’ does he?? It was a ridiculous comment.

Nothing ridiculous about my comment. I've watched him for 10 months now. Apart from wearing ill-fitting suits a la Jeremy Corbyn and saying 'next slide please', he appears to know absolutely nothing more than that which a common or garden idiot like myself can understand from reading figures - without the needs of graphs. He knows the answer to NO questions. I am sure that the man is eminently qualified. However, he knows FUCK ALL.

Are we watching the same shows? He is always very through and detailed with his answers. And he answers a huge number of questions. I feel far more confident of his knowledge than I do most of the other people answering the questions.

There is nothing in the law currently that says non essential businesses have to close, except the ones that have already been closed. If that changes I am sure her employer will comply.

If your friend feels her work is non essential maybe her employer will agree and make her redundant. I’m sure she won’t mind.

Some people honestly seem to think we can run a country, a health service and pay everyone’s wages with no economic activity taking place. It’s very strange.

What does he know?

I don't know what he knows? He can't answer any single question, not related to his slides on statistics. As I said, he knows fuck all.

Babyroobs · 10/01/2021 23:08

I wonder if the BBC news feature this evening on the giant emergency morgue in Surrey being set up was designed to shock people into thinking about their behavior a bit more also ?

SnowFields · 10/01/2021 23:08

@Hatstrategicallydipped he really does answer a wide variety of questions, not just about slide shows. Here are some

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 23:18

Was that from 9 months ago Snowfields?

SnowFields · 11/01/2021 07:54

Chris Whitty is answering questions this morning on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Figgygal · 11/01/2021 09:55

Witty has done a half hour call on radio 5 live
Answered all questions he could which were relevant to his sphere of expertise - couldn’t answer a question about school returns for his example
You are entitled to your opinion but exist to be challenged on it
Maybe start your own I hate Chris witty thread if you want a proper debate and stop derailing this one

mellongoose · 11/01/2021 13:55

CW currently answering questions on radio 5Live/BBC news channel. He is clearly all over this and is answering very well.
