All of you up in arms over people taking key worker places?

Do you also think that non essential businesses should be closed? Or do you think that they don't contribute to spread?

For example Greggs, McDonald's, Burger King are all open.

I have family who work in factories and warehouses in crowded conditions making and packing very non essential goods.

B&Q is open and today is busy and full of family groups.

No doubt The Range is the same.

Do you feel as angry about all of this than for example, an NHS admin worker using a key worker space?

Closing down other non essential businesses such as where @Waxonwaxoff0 works for example, comes with added pressure of being able to keep the business afloat during the closures. Its ok to say government will pay to furlough staff but there's other expenses for the business to consider. Not all would be able to sustain another closure which would result in even more job losses and less money going into the economy which our NHS, emergency services and education all desperately need the benefit from now more than ever.

SendHelp30 · 09/01/2021 15:40

Ageist how? John Lewis is no more essential JD sports

Chocolateteabag · 09/01/2021 15:42

where do you draw the line at what is "essential"?

What about research labs? Mine isn't working on anything COVID related, should it close?

It is working on research which could go on to save countless lives from other diseases and conditions though.

Small businesses will not recover if they stop now - government "help" is not going to save them. Even bigger companies cannot just "pause" for 2-3-4 months - they will just go under

It's a very tricky line to navigate to say what should and shouldn't happen

Wontdothisagain · 09/01/2021 15:47

I've no idea where you draw the line on what is essential.

What is essential to you might not be essential me. All I know is that behind so called frontline workers, there are lots of other key roles.

Many of the things people in these jobs will have children who need looking after. The workers can't always just take 3 months off as there'd be no one to do the job.

Places like b and m or home bargains should be closed or certain departments taped off. Toys, wallpaper, garden stuff shouldn’t be allowed. My local b and m is so busy.

Ylvamoon · 09/01/2021 15:52

I don't think it's feasible to close the types of Business like McDonald's or B&Q. Although they are multinational companies, there are just as many independent shops operating under the same rules. Many just about made it to December/ January, closing them down now, means many won't open again. Leading to more redundancies, now people on benefits and do on.

Hugepeppapigfan · 09/01/2021 15:53

It would be a good start to have it as two key worker parents or one key worker parent plus the other one unable to work from home. I’m a school leader having to deal with one key worker parent and one NON-WORKING parent demanding school places for their because they government say they are entitled to this. It’s ridiculous! I have a lot of sympathy for working parents (key worker or otherwise) but the examples I have of families with a non-working parent demanding places is shameful. Then we could move on to tackling the families where one or both parents are working from home and could keep the children at home.

Myshinynewname · 09/01/2021 15:53

Yes I do.

marshmallowfluffy · 09/01/2021 15:55

B and Q needs to be open so that people can make repairs. I've had to go twice during the pandemic to get materials that were urgent so I can fix leaks.I think that they were click and Collect in lockdown 1.0 which was the right decision. But I'm guessing that there's people looking at non-essentials like photo frames and cushions which isn't ok.

People are angry about the NHS admin person who can work from home taking a place because there's others who could use the slot more eg disabled and vulnerable children. There's also people like social workers who can't discuss their cases in earshot of their kids as it involves horrible things that kids shouldn't know about.

More people at school = more positives = more restrictions and risking bubbles bursting for people who need the school slot. That's far from ok

Persianparadise · 09/01/2021 15:58

Today 15:14 copernicium

I feel sorry for the people who have jobs that can't be closed such as packing, but can't get school places so will lose their jobs. I'm angry at those who demanded school closures and now take their kids to B&M every day.

Totally agree with your comment. I work in a warehouse fashion so not essential. I’m lucky our boss have put the elderly and people with no childcare on furlough. Which I’m grateful for, I’d need to take unpaid leave if they didn’t. Yes I thought that too, parents griping over schools closing, then see them not following rules or walking round the local b and m or without masks either

marshmallowfluffy · 09/01/2021 16:01

There is a lot of "everybody else should stay at home while my family lives normally"
People doing online packing jobs should be ahead of some of the occupations that are allowed school places like financial services (Brexit transition workers)

amicissimma · 09/01/2021 16:04

I'm not sure that people would be too happy if their pay was late or short because the payroll person WFH kept getting distracted by a child.

Having had a large and hard-to-fix plumbing issue I'm very glad that various places that sold all sorts of hardware to fix it and make good the damage were open. Also that I could buy some heaters when it prevented my heating from working. Perhaps I should have just got a grip and lived with a small stream running through my kitchen, destroying everything in its path (I would have needed to switch off the electricity in the house within a few days so would have needed takeaways) and put up with the cold until lockdown lifts in - when? February? March?

And just how much spread of Covid do you think there really is from people, in masks, spending about 5 minutes picking takeaways up from well-ventilated Greggs, McDonald's and so on?

My friend is a nurse, her husband works from home but is on zoom calls all day and can't entertain their 6 year old, who isn't a "sit down and be quiet type". My friend needs to sleep in the day before/after working a night shift, she sends her DD to school so she can get this sleep and not make mistakes at work, a mistake could potentially cost a patient their life.
marshmallowfluffy · 09/01/2021 16:16

McDonalds is drive thru and delivery only which is the right decision imo. I know that delivery drivers are still taking a risk but much better than people turning up in big numbers congregating around the screen showing which numbers are ready.
Greggs is the strictest shop on my high street. Unlike other shops they maintain a maximum number of people in the store and it's a reasonable number for the space.

itsgettingweird · 09/01/2021 16:35

I wouldn't I have that rage over these people using keyworker spaces because they are keyworkers.

But in regards to should they be open I don't think so. Mostly because as you pointed out they aren't being used for essential purposes but by families who want to go out and not to it by walking in the cold!

I had an email form Dfs about my sofa I ordered back in October. Saying manufacturing still happening but may be small delay.

I was surprised. I expected the email to say manufacturing had stopped and there would be a large delay. It's hardly essential imo!!!!

(Not that whilst stuck at home I wouldn't love my new sofa to laze on Grin)

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 09/01/2021 16:43

This

People want everyone else to follow the rules as long as they and theirs don’t need to make sacrifices or suffer

nomorename · 09/01/2021 16:52

It should be as it was in March. Not half hearted like this time... I mean, estate agents are classed as key workers!! Give me strength.

You tell us?! Do you have the official figures on transmission rates from such activities?
Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 09/01/2021 16:58

There seems to be a lot of people who think they have a special case for not having to do what everyone is having to do. Keyworkers have families too and can people remember teachers etc and being forced to put their children into to schools so they can care for “keyworkers children” even though they may not want to because they know first hand the dangers. But if they don’t then they too may lose their jobs.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 09/01/2021 16:59

No OP
I am angry with the mainly MC families who have office roles
Often two of them at home
And wiggle they key worker excuse despite TWO wfh

This is a definitely a class thing

The people who have to leave their house and keep shit going have my
Respect ✊

Thisisworsethananticpated · 09/01/2021 17:01

No doubt you would think they were key if you were in the middle of a house move which was encouraged by the Government just a few months ago and for which the benefit ends in March
nomorename · 09/01/2021 17:05

@User5437 I'm sure that could be extended by the same government that put it in to place and who would be enforcing another lockdown. You're missing the point.

GypsyLee · 09/01/2021 17:06

We need to just have basics and skeleton staff.
Fuck deliveries, takeaways, and any business that isn't necessary for survival.
People are so greedy and want all the time.
