My DH 29 no health conditions is now on day three in hospital with his oxygen levels still not improving. He is on iv antibiotics and morphine. Drs have said he has a severe lung infection. I don't know what to do with myself I'm trying to stay strong for our three babies DS6,DS4 and DD 9 months. I don't understand how it's affected him so terribly. My symptoms were so mild and lasted 4/5 days. He has had symptoms since 28th December. I'm so worried. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take to get off the oxygen? Where there any complications? Would you be able to share the Long term prognosis ? He keeps saying he feels like this is it and that he won't be coming home 😭

Handhold OP. I couldn’t read and run. I don’t personally have much experience with it but I just wanted to offer support and hopefully someone else will come along and can be a bit more helpful. Just remember he is in the best place. Xx

tarapinn · 09/01/2021 09:47

Oh poor you. And him. Sad
He is in the best place though and likely going to be just fine.

Lindy2 · 09/01/2021 09:58

How worrying. He is in the right place though and getting treatment.

DH had 2 friends in hospital just before Christmas. They were both very poorly and close to needing to go on ventilators. One couldn't even manage 5 minutes off oxygen.

However, from being very ill both suddenly one day turned the corner and when the recovery started it actually came quite quickly. They were both out of hospital only a few days after starting to do better. It was 4-5 days of very poorly and going downhill. Then only 2-3 days of starting to get better and then being discharged to continue to recover at home.

The plasma treatments and new drugs do really help.

I hope your DH feels better soon. The antibiotics should help his infection.

Could you get lots of friends and family to send him messages designed specifically to boost his morale? I expect they probably already are but if he is repeatedly told he is loved and supported by lots of different people then it must help with the mental health side of being in this situation.

A handhold from me. I know how worrying it is having husband in hospital. When I spoke to my husband I kept telling him that we were fine and not to worry about us. He has told me since that it helped him knowing we were ok. Look after yourself and children, I doubt you can eat much, but try to eat little and often.

Melabells · 09/01/2021 14:37

Thanks so much for your replies and support it's really appreciated. He has deteriorated again this afternoon so not sure what the next 12 hours will hold. He can't even speak to his babies on FaceTime as too breathless. The idea about the messages is great I will try get something organised .

Hope he better soon OP. Flowers

Peggyslantern · 09/01/2021 15:08

I'm so sorry. It must be so worrying. I have an acquaintance in her early thirties who was very poorly on a ventilator a week ago and who is recovering really well now so just take things a day at a time. He has a better chance of getting through this than he would have done in April. It does seem to be very random as to who gets severely ill with it.

Blue2021 · 09/01/2021 15:10

Thinking of you OP. Keeps us updated. Sending you all strength. Xx

Hi, I was in hospital for 2 weeks. The first five days were intolerable. I was given what was then research medication, tocilizumab the first day I was admitted, this has now been licensed and is apparently very effective in reducing symptoms. Has your DH been given this (there is another medication licensed yesterday but I dont know the name) perhaps you could push for this. It definitely didnt have immediate effect and I had to have a course if remidsivir as well, but between them they at least allowed me off oxygen long enough to go to the toilet. I was still not well when I came home and still struggle now 6 weeks later, but it was good to be home. I went from literally thinking I would die to making a decent recovery so please have faith that there is a way forward. I would ask what medication he is receiving and push for one of the ones that have just been licensed. Fingers extremely firmly crossed that he will turn the corner soon.

Thanks for all the support guys. Just doing my last breastfeed of the day and hopefully get some sleep soon. DH seems to be more stable since he deteriorated this morning. The INtensuve care drs continue to monitor him closely. He is still very breathless so difficult to FaceTime with the kids. He developed pneumonia last night which is why they think his o2 levels were dropping. Hopefully tonight will be better. He's scared I'm scared. The drs have offered him a place on a new drug trial but no other details yet until tomorrow. He will be in they said between one and two weeks. I just want him home so I can hold him 😭
