Two Women fined for walking for Starbucks

What rule have they broken? I don’t understand. Two of them met - yes can meet one other person - they’d driven 5 miles - surely that’s ok?! - and they had a Starbucks each which the police said was a picnic?!
Why are they keeping takeaways open if it’s agaisnt the law to get one? I took my kids to the park, the coffee shop was open for takeaway. It was freezing. We got a hot chocolate each. I’m too scared to do so again!

@Miljea

The police aren't covering themselves in glory, are they?
I certainly wouldn’t want to go on any of his picnics if all he’s offering is a measly cup of coffee 😟
mummybsd · 09/01/2021 18:27

The report i read said they were arrested as they drove into the car park so they could not have been in one car.

DenisetheMenace · 09/01/2021 19:06

Personally, I wouldn’t take the risk of going into a cafe (CEV DH)

“The starbucks in Ashby (which is where they came from) is drive through so they probably didn't even get out their car“

I meant I wouldn’t want to drink from a cup handled by someone else.

CruCru · 09/01/2021 19:08

It’s a bit off topic but Ashby-de-la-Zouch is a really weird place name. Although probably normal to people who live there.

Ohthiscantbeit · 09/01/2021 19:15

I’d be asking how much distance can you cover in an hour, as a lot of people can manage to cover 8 miles within an hour. Would that be breaking the law?
Would hydrating yourself whilst exercising be breaking the law?

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 19:23

As usual with this story I think there’s a lot more to it! A warning bell for me was when she said that there was so many police officers around she thought there’d been a murder so she’d carried on anyway! Probably thought she’d have a nosey, cos one thing a crime scene or police incident needs is more onlookers!! Especially in the middle of a serious pandemic. Most people can do the right thing but some still think it’s ok to go where they want and do what they want. People have been asked to not travel unnecessarily , they obviously drove somewhere to get drinks then drove on to somewhere else? Why could they not have walked to get a coffee.? Kills 2 birds? I presume if they broke down or had an accident they’d expect someone to come out to them? You don’t need to drive to go for a walk. Emergency services are all really stretched, I know it’s hard but people should respect what they’re being asked to do.
I think most people are being advised by the police, fines are usually a last resort. The government has tried to rely on people’s common sense which is often lacking. Sadly because of this more stringent measures will probably be needed.

"As usual with this story I think there’s a lot more to it!"

No it's Derbyshire police making up there own laws again.

WhiteChocCheesecakeRocks · 09/01/2021 19:29

That 5 miles may have been a half way mark to meet up? They may have been a bubble. I drive about 5 miles to go for a walk with the kids because the park locally is rammed on the footpath it's too busy to distance. I can't take the pram through the mud.
So we go elsewhere and rarely see anyone else.... And we take a drink!

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 09/01/2021 19:30

Well Met Police broke their own laws if you look at the evidence in the Daily Mail. 3 squad cars sat inside a cafe having breakfast.

Justa47 · 09/01/2021 19:32

@Superketchup
It’s the definition of local.
Difference everywhere you live. So five miles ok at one place and not others.

The piont really is we all need to stay in.
Put once a day.
See your friend on zoom.

Before I get flamed again.
Numbers and deaths......

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 19:47

Totally Agree. It shouldn’t have to be made law, but it will probably need to be.

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 19:52

I doubt it, the ‘guidance’ was open to interpretation & for some reason the officer in this case thought a fine was necessary. There’s definitely more to it, maybe she was asked to leave first? Unfortunately I don’t prescribe to ACAB, there’s always good and bad in every role but they, and all the emergency services are doing a difficult job under difficult circumstances.

The advice is easy ,

Two Women fined for walking for Starbucks
ImAllOut · 09/01/2021 19:55

The fines have been overturned so in this case it was the police at fault.

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 19:59

It shouldn’t be that difficult, unless travel is essential, for Work, essential shopping or caring. Then you STAY AT HOME. There is provision for exercise too.
Personally I don’t drive anywhere I don’t have to. But I’m a key worker. And I’ve also been very unwell with covid, pneumonia and now long covid. I would LOVE to stay at home & stay safe but my role is front line. If yours isn’t and you’re lucky enough to be fit & healthy. Be sensible and make it easier for the rest of us to look after you.
Please

Flyingin · 09/01/2021 20:02

It is really really important to be outside to get fresh air and vitamin D apart from anything else.

Sleepyblueocean · 09/01/2021 20:08

We drove ds around for a hour today to distract him from trying to hurt himself and to give ourselves a break from caring from a severely disabled teenager. We will do the same tomorrow and possibly get him out of the car if we think it will not cause more upset behaviour. I would love to be l staying safe at home but that is not how our life is at the moment.

echt · 09/01/2021 20:08

@Flyingin

You don't need to go 5 miles to do that. In winter weather, you would be unlikely to have enough skin showing to generate the vitamin D you need.

Boris has thrown the police under the bus with the vague ruling. Twat.

OnlyTeaForMe · 09/01/2021 20:10

@1515mnet You're being very selective in your cropping there Hmm

You're right, there IS provision for exercise, and a walk IS exercise.
And you are allowed to meet one other person not from your household.

Not everyone has a best friend on their doorstep.
Not everyone has appropriate routes right from their front doors.
I'm also surprised that no one has pointed out that for women, walking in pairs, especially after dark (which is about 4.15pm here currently) is an important safety factor.

Newsflash - being outside is not risky Covid behaviour unless you are getting close to people while you are out. Do you honestly think that individuals or families out for a walk on their own are what is spreading the virus? Of course they aren't. The virus is being spread indoors in care homes, doctors' surgeries, hospitals, offices, public transport, schools and shops, where people are inside with other people and often minimal ventilation. Get a grip.

^^ This x100. I continue to be amazed that people don't really understand how the virus spreads. As one doctor said recently, ventilation is one of our biggest weapons right now, and guess what, outside is one hell of a big ventilated space!

@1515mnet

The advice is easy ,
yep

and what you have posted is advice, not law

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 20:15

Absolutely, the police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They really can’t win.
They’ll probably pass some sort of law now, which is a shame as a common sense approach would have been better. But obviously the police will have to enforce the law so we’ll see more posts like this cos people won’t like it! I wouldn’t want their job.

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 20:17

Absolutely, but if people could follow it it wouldn’t have to be law.
It’s not that difficult, use common sense think of other people

1515mnet · 09/01/2021 20:27

Absolutely.
Shame it can’t be followed!

VinylDetective · 09/01/2021 20:41

It was followed. God, the dementors are out in force on this thread.
1515mnet · 09/01/2021 20:45

First time on here. This is not for me.
If you’re happy with what you’re doing then carry on. Just wanted to give an alternative opinion.
Stay safe,
