[NB - Lighthearted . . .]

Is it just me, or did anyone else find this visual on the BBC website a bit weird?

On a serious note, the lack of cultural diversity in clothing is a bit of an issue - especially for certain groups which be more at risk already

It really isn't. Nobody is looking at that and saying "I don't see a hijab/turban/skirt/whatever, clearly the vaccine is not for me!".
Credit people with some intellignce.

This is a joke, right?
Lindy2 · 08/01/2021 13:45

They're all in the queue for people wearing blue or orange trousers. There must be a queue elsewhere for other colours and alternative items of clothing.

Excellent 100% mask wearing compliance. Very poor social distancing though.

I must go and find some blue or orange trousers now. I don't want to not be properly prepared when I get my vaccine invitation.

Benjispruce2 · 08/01/2021 13:47

Ohh ffs really op?

Cattasaurus · 08/01/2021 13:49

@OnlyTeaForMe

They all look incredibly able-bodied!

I think some people have snuck into the queue twice too Grin

They also dont represent the racial makeup of the uk its 85% white british about 7% asian and 2% black rest other groups..
OnlyTeaForMe · 08/01/2021 13:52

@AcornAutumn
Well, actually, no, it wasn't really a joke. I don't want to derail what was meant to be a lighthearted thread, but graphics in health promotion information are actually important.

@atswim2birds is right that people don't articulate or even acknowledge a response, but there can be a subliminal effect.

Given the huge variation in likely uptake of the vaccine (public health research found 57% of respondents from BAME backgrounds likely to accept a COVID-19 vaccine, compared to 79% of White respondents) healthcare communication shouldn't risk excluding anyone.

I used to work in public health information for patients, which is probably why I reacted to this particular image in the first place.
Our design department used to have a checklist to try to ensure age/ ethnic/disability groups were represented as widely as possible.

I really don't think someone in a wheelchai going to think OMG, clearly this vaccine isn't for me, based on the picture.

TPTB are hopefully focusing their attention on getting needles into arms, not on producing lovely artwork that ticks every box.

Why are you completely ignoring the very first post clearly setting out the intention was a light hearted observation?

If you can ignore that basic step I don’t see why you couldn’t just ignore the thread completely tbh.

HerselfIndoors · 08/01/2021 14:03

It's not great but working with a lot of designers, I recognise a quick edit and paste job!

It's amazing how many designers have to be reminded to make people different sexes, let alone include different ethnicities, disabilities etc. One project I did the designer had done all the people in his own image, white with dark hair and a beard Hmm

HerselfIndoors · 08/01/2021 14:03

Not even social distancing them is extra crap though...

Hahahaha this made me laugh so much! Thanks for the giggle op.
KitKatastrophe · 08/01/2021 14:09

@Peachered

This made me laugh.

I would also rather graphic design budgets were spent wisely, graphics produced quickly and easily and money diverted elsewhere.

At least I now know how to stand when I go for my vaccine though :D

Why have graphics at all? This is literally just a list of people in order.
ConcernedAuntie · 08/01/2021 14:11

To be fair I can't remember the last time i saw anyone in a dress or a skirt. Shorts in the summer maybe. Mind you I haven't been far lately (or a long time actually).

OnlyTeaForMe · 08/01/2021 14:13

why have some ejects stopped dead in the middle of the line, holding the queue up?

Yes, I took an instant dislike to the man at the front of the End Feb onwards line blocking everyone behind him!. The man in the black T-shirt is determined to get past though Grin.

Where's the first queue before the one before this, OP, so that we can all buy the appropriate trousers ?

CherryValanc · 08/01/2021 14:14

May be it's a cunning plan to make sales in orange trousers soar.

All in Hebden bridge are celebrating. Finally they can do something with that excess of tangerine corduroy Jeff accidentally ordered in 2016

Well, actually, it's a 'Disney' queue and snakes right up the stairwell from the 5th floor. . .

Maybe not "omg this vaccine isn't for me" but I am thinking it's a bit shit -to be forgotten again, given CEV have already been viewed by the general population as frail old people on the verge of death.
itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 14:23

@MarinPrime

The BBC graphic the other day had over 70s pictured with the old person leaning on a stick like in the road sign.

Yes, I saw that and was gobsmacked at the ageism. I don't know anyone in their 70s who walks bent over like that with a stick.

My 70yo dad is fitter than me. He runs 5k 5 times a week and paddle boards all year except the absolutely freezing period of 6 weeks in winter Grin
itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 14:24

On a serious note though it's a food point about lack of diversity as we know some of the harder to reach communities need the k clubs I've approach.

PickAChew · 08/01/2021 14:26

They better be baggy trousers because I'm at the back of that queue and can't wait that long without a toilet break

Its not ageism. OVER 70's is not the same as IN THEIR 70's, and even if it was, there are plenty of people in their 70's in that position.
Remember: things exist even if you haven't personally seen them.

OnlyTeaForMe · 08/01/2021 14:29

Why have graphics at all?

  • Low literacy levels, especially in some of the most at risk groups (average UK literacy age is about that of a 10/11 year old?)
  • Communities who don't have English as a first language

I’m concerned about Blondie’s sexual assault on the poor fella in front of her in the 16-64 with underlying health conditions queue.
