1.5 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

They’ve vaccinated 1.5 million people so far and the target is 13.9 million people (the top 4 groups in the attached graphic) by the middle of February, according to ITV. It’ll be a fantastic achievement if they can hit that target.

The government will be providing daily updates on the vaccine rollout progress from Monday 11th January.

It’s such a relief that they’ve got this vaccine and are rolling it out quickly across the country. Considering that it’s only 8th January today, I truly feel like 13.9 million by mid February is achievable.

Come on, let’s do this!

The Moderna vaccine is coming through and it is far faster to administer as the patient doesn't need to wait for same amount of time - so greater numbers vaccinated in a day. (According to nurse / vaccinator friend).

Blessex · 16/01/2021 13:52

Mum has just got the call. She goes at 5pm today. She jumped at the chance. I think there must have been a cancellation due to snow as she is 74 years old! My dad who is 77 was booked for Tuesday since the other day so he is a bit miffed mum has got a cancellation slot and beats him to it!!! Grin. It’s such a relief. Both my parents will have some protection. It is Pfizer and done at local surgery out in the sticks. The logistics of this are incredible. Well done the U.K and the amazing British people.

CaveMum · 16/01/2021 13:54

I take back my earlier message, several of the racecourses have come online as vaccination hubs already - Windsor, Leicester, Newcastle and Newbury have started offering jabs in the last few days.

ihearttc · 16/01/2021 14:16

I took my parents to have theirs this morning (84 and 82). It was incredibly well done with the minimal amount of waiting around and they were very fast. Lots of nurses etc all doing it at the same time so multiple people getting done in a short time. I’m in awe (and actually a bit emotional that I managed to get my Mum who can hardly walk there in the snow). I’m a TA and I can’t wait for me to be done too so I can perhaps relax a bit (I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis) so should hopefully be in Group 6.)

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/01/2021 14:18

Both my parents have been done! Dad is 80 but my mother is late 70s so she was expecting another few weeks wait. So happy and relieved.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 16/01/2021 14:24

@Mumoftwoinprimary

I’ve just done some sums. This link from BBC news gives the likelihood of people of different ages being Covid positive and in hospital in general and intensive care:-

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55586994

I nabbed population off the government site (note - this isn’t perfect as the rates are for England and the population numbers are UK but close enough), shoved it in a spreadsheet, did a little sumproducting and can give the split of age groups who are Covid positive and in intensive care:-

0-15 2%
16 - 44 17%
45 - 64 43%
65 - 74 27%
75 - 84 10%
85+ 2%

This means that once we are through all 65+ (So first 5 groups - there are about 3 million 65 - 69 year olds so will take about 9 days so hopefully by Feb 24th) then that is 39% of current intensive care bed holders no longer there.

For Covid positive hospital admissions in general the over 65s are 61% and the over 75s (so first 3 groups) are 44%.

Now go put that information on some of the doom threads you marvellous person Grin

That's good news. I wasn't expecting that one until Late March/April.

Does anyone who has been know? Do you book your second at the first jab or will you hear in due course?

PrincessNutNuts · 16/01/2021 16:04

I see Biden has set a goal to vaccinate 100 million people in his first 100 days. SmileStar

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 16/01/2021 16:10

I'm guessing it varies from place to place but were asked to book my elderly Dad in for both jabs when we logged on - one at end of January and one mid April. This is at one of the super centre hubs.

It is going to be a logictical challenge to get him there as I'm 30 miles away from him and he is 30 miles in another direction to the super centre. Also I'm going to need to nab a wheelchair.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 16/01/2021 16:10

logistical!

PrincessNutNuts · 16/01/2021 16:11

I've promised my great uncle that I'll ring his surgery on Tuesday if the home haven't heard anything by then. He's in group 1 and so are they.

The home are expecting a GP to come in and do it, and think the issue is supply of vaccine, but he is very anxious that they've been missed out somehow, since they've all been expecting to be done since early December thanks to Matt Hancock and next week is almost the end of January.

Talk of moving on to other groups is worrying him. He must be due this week, surely?

thatgingergirl · 16/01/2021 16:14

Different arrangements depending on delivery hub I guess - my mum and dad were vaccinated on Wednesday in a community hub, and were told they'd be contacted about their follow up appointment. I've got it on my calendar to check with them at week 9!

Thank you @OverTheRainbowLiesOz

I'll have to do similar with my Great Aunt. What a palaver. Wink

The thing is, it's so important, we'll move heaven and earth to get them there won't we? At any hour. I was surprised the Prime Minister didn't understand that.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 16/01/2021 16:20

Yes - I'd travel 100 miles if I had to!

I'm told it is a good idea to take a warm blanket for them as there can be a bit of a wait, so get your Great Aunt to wrap up warm @Princess*. Also my friend says I will be allowed in with him to allay any fears.

RedToothBrush · 16/01/2021 16:30

Biden has got a bit of an issue.

It turns out the Trump adminstration have already fucked him over on this. Pfizer offered the US a massive order of vaccine doses, but Trump turned it down. The EU took the available order instead. The US have 200 million doses to be supplied by end March - enough to vaccinate 100 million

But then they hit a problem. With Pfizer already reporting delivery delays as they have to reduce production temporarily to increase their capacity (much to the annoyance of the EU who are most affected) this means the US is at serious risk will struggle to get delivery of any subsequent orders in significant quantity of vaccinations until nearly June now. They will only have Moderna available.

I'm sure this can probably be brought forward slightly if Biden throws the kitchen sink at the problem but its a really big issue. Trump just didn't put in a big enough order. With that in mind Biden has got a bigger headache than it appears.

www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/01/15/trump-vaccine-reserve-used-up/
Vaccine reserve was exhausted when Trump administration vowed to release it, dashing hopes of expanded access
States were anticipating a windfall after federal officials said they would stop holding back second doses. But the approach had already changed, and no stockpile exists.

When Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced this week that the federal government would begin releasing coronavirus vaccine doses that had been held in reserve for second shots, no such reserve existed, according to state and federal officials briefed on distribution plans. The Trump administration had already begun shipping out what was available, starting at the end of December, taking second doses for the two-dose regimen directly off the manufacturing line.

Now, health officials across the country who had anticipated their extremely limited vaccine supply as much as doubling beginning next week are confronting the reality that their allocations will remain largely flat, dashing hopes of dramatically expanding access for millions of elderly people and those with high-risk medical conditions. Health officials in some cities and states were informed in recent days about the reality of the situation, while others were still in the dark Friday.

That means Biden faces the likelihood of having to make a choice of making a similar decision to the UK and delay second doses, or slow the programme down and potentially have a couple of months in April / May were availability of the vaccine is extremely low.

This does however put the UK in an interesting position. Our pfizer supply might be impacted slightly by the production issues but because we cracked on we have already recieved a large amount of our order and its already been delivered. And unlike the US and EU who have yet to approve it, we still have Oxford.

Its a story worth watching out for. How will it be mitigated? Will there be further delays to the rest of the world with Biden elbowing his way back to the front of the queue?

Update... we have now vaccinated 3,559,179 people up to and including Friday 15th January!

A massive achievement!

It means that 324,233 were vaccinated yesterday - another rise which takes us to just 20,000 off the daily total we need to meet the 14th February target (which by my calculations is 344,000 people vaccinated per day).

Very happy for @Blessex and all the other posters whose parents have had the call.

And actually as FourTeaFallOut (I think it was) pointed out up thread, there’s bound to be people in that 13.9 million who refuse to have the vaccine for whatever reason, so we’re probably already at the daily target we need (or very near it) when accounting for those.

The Janice turner article made me well up - I have to say for those wanting a bit of positivity I've found the times really refreshing on Saturdays - there was a very positive article by Matthew parris last Saturday saying how close we are to better times

The Janice turner article made me well up

I’ve just read it and it’s excellent - thanks to the poster who shared it!

It even mentions that we need a Blue Peter appeal accumulator to show the daily tally - which I believe was suggested by another poster on the early pages of this thread! Grin

That figure actually doesn't include Scotland and Wales as they don't report on weekends. If they managed the same number as the previous day it would add up to roughly another 20k!
