800 patients A DAY being admitted to London hospitals with Covid

Official figures from the NHS. Meanwhile stupid people are protesting outside hospitals calling it a hoax and other people are busy on social media telling others it's a con and the vaccine is highly dangerous.

And other stupid people are blaming the government. It makes me despair I'm afraid. People are their own worst enemies.

Yes, the government does make last minute decisions, especially for things which are a last resort like closing schools or reducing legal gatherings at Christmas from 5 days to 1. I would rather they react to the most up-to-date information than just stick to what they decided 3 weeks ago which may no longer be suitable.

Bohemiagirl · 08/01/2021 08:49

In London mixing wasn't allowed on Xmas Day. I know of one family who decided to ignore the rules and there were 4 households on the day. Her justification was 'we're a very close family' (clearly mine aren't because we did what we were asked to do). They now, all 11 of them, are ill with covid and her 85 year old mother has just been hospitalised.

We all have to take personal responsibility for our actions, not just opt out and blame the government.

DdraigGoch · 08/01/2021 08:53

I'm sick of people blaming the government for the stupidity of the populace. The government has never said that it is acceptable to wear one's mask around one's chin but what do scores of people do?

AethelsWhiteGoose · 08/01/2021 08:53

@dottiedaisee thank you for what you do and for describing them as ‘beautiful old people’. My grandfather passed away from covid in December. He still had a decent quality of life. None of us could say goodbye, that’s what hurts the most.

Bluesername · 08/01/2021 08:55

one little Chirchillian act had to be done, give the common people Christmas Day

No doubt there would have been a lot of outrage if people hadn't had the one day (even though it only worked for people whose relatives lived nearby). If they'd totally 'cancelled Christmas' a lot of people would have flouted the rules anyway and moaned that the government was too controlling. Tabloids full of Scrooge headlines etc.

Bohemiagirl · 08/01/2021 08:58

Blusername they did cancel the one day for people in Tier 4. Most people I know complied with it.

KimNotEllen · 08/01/2021 09:15

We were in tier 2 for Xmas, even though all around us areas were tier 4 and our numbers were higher than them. Ever day we are rocketing up the table for the most cases per 100K and now are in the top 10. I do think Christmas must have contributed to this, surely

LindyLou2020 · 08/01/2021 09:35

Yes, you are totally right - people of all "skin colours" have been and are breaking the rules, not just at Christmas.
But it was switchitup99, not me, who made a point of referring to a family as Caribbean British, saying it was their "family way" to mix, but it's the Government's fault that they now have infections.
As if their culture lets them off the hook.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/01/2021 09:41

My local area is currently in the top 3 for infections and probably around 99% white.

cptartapp · 08/01/2021 10:12

switch very poor choice by the family who are now looking for someone to blame for their lack of judgement which may well cost their vulnerable high risk family member a life.
That's partly why we're in this mess, when people prefer to point the finger rather than refuse to take personal responsibility for their own well being.
Have worked in the NHS for ove 30 years and see it all the time.
Everyone I know personally whose been affected has broken the rules.

JayDot500 · 08/01/2021 13:57

@switchitup99

A friend told me of a friend today admitted to hospital

Caribbean British, had a big family Christmas with adult children because it is the family way... all went down with Covid before New Year Eve.... Dad, mid 50's, BAME, overweight, diabetic.... now in hospital with the whole family praying......

I hate our Government. This one is on them

Nah, this is on that family's decision (I say this as a Black British /Caribbean woman with ignorant friends and family).

I don't wish death/sickness upon anyone, but I also won't tolerate people blaming anyone but themselves in this situation. Especially those who say God will keep them safe, so do little to mitigate exposure to covid.

IrmaFayLear · 08/01/2021 14:05

@switchitup99 absolutely demonstrates what this country is up against.

Whatever you do, no matter how bad or stupid, always, always blame someone else Hmm

EssentialHummus · 08/01/2021 14:39

But the government have been shit as well. People have been shit and the government have been totally useless. Both things are true and quite possibly linked.

This. 1) Some people are dumb. And frankly I'm a literate person who needs to keep on top of the rules for my work and even I sometimes battle with tiers, lockdowns, what's allowed where etc. It's genuinely like the sodding hokey cokey and that kind of mixed messaging is a disaster.

  1. BJ wants to be liked. Hence xmas mixing etc. Actually he should have made some difficult decisions months ago on SAGE advice.

  2. Cummings.

  3. Most people at this point don't trust the government, because of the above, and because they feel that 8+ months of compliance has given them fuck all, so compliance is lower. Not just in terms of adhering to the rules, but also to their spirit - so, for example, taking up a school (or nursery, imo) place because you can, rather because you absolutely need it. That kind of collective effort and trust has evaporated now.

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 15:13

This government is shit.

Their messaging isn't clear (but their special advisors are brilliant)

They make decisions too late.

But they are not responsible for all the Christmas and NYE parties and mixing. They are not responsible for people breaking the law. They aren't responsible for everyone who thinks I'll have 3 different bubbles because I can, I'll have a KW space because I can but I could manage without, I'll just walk to Costa and queue outside for 30 minutes because I can.

The figures are real. The shit has hit the fan. And the only people who can do something now to turn the tide is those people who are pushing the guidelines because they can to STOP.

they need to stay home.

Myshinynewname2021 · 08/01/2021 16:01

Yeah I agree! They have not told anyone to wear a mask or socially distance or work from home or stay at home. Or wash their hands. There's has been literally no message about not having parties or gatherings. No wonder the country is fucked. It's all the tories fault.

Oh wait.. hang on...,

FOR FUCKS SAKE PEOPLE. How difficult can it be to understand? Face space hands. I don't understand the rules intimately either. But I don't need to because I have applied exactly the same rules since lockdown version one apart from a handful of socially distanced masked sanitised pub trips and some work where I drove in.

Because doing something stupid just because the government didn't specifically tell me with infographics personally sent to my communication method of choice doesn't make it not stupid.

Honestly I don't think we would have this constant shit if Labour was in power. This kind of rhetoric is very left wing specific.

Think the argument there is Labour tried to give us jez. Someone even most life long labour supporters couldn't vote for in good faith. Therefore it is labours fault Grin

If kier was up against Boris back then the whole pandemic would probably have been handled better now.

Therefore I blame Labour Wine

Myshinynewname2021 · 08/01/2021 21:43

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum Haha well said! I really like what I've seen of Keir. He svoifs the sanctimony and judging of so many of he party. Though highly reasonable and intelligent people don't always make great leaders sadly. Sadiq Khan is cut from a similar cloth and is useless. But oh Jesus I can't even begin to imagine how this whole thing would have played out under Jezzer. 😁

Don't get me started on our our Elf on a Shelf Mayor of LondonAngry

I actually quite liked him before the pandemic. However he has shown himself to be completely useless in the last year. It was actually looking like he wanted to kill Londoners at the beginning of this. His decisions were that bad.

Why is it on the Government exactly?

Whilst l am very sorry someone is ill in hospital this is entirely avoidable

We all know so much about this virus and how it spreads, we are not children who have to be told what to do, we are adults with our own minds, we all have a choice.

It is not that hard to stay home and not socialise in the bigger scheme of things, especially when we all know the possible consequences.

Myshinynewname2021 · 08/01/2021 22:41

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum I know! Hod and those FUCKING cycle lanes complete with bollards. What in the name of all that's holy was that about??? It's a global pandemic with job losses and furloughs and the councils are being strong armed into spending money on highly dangerous and expensive cycle lanes that create huge amounts of congestion snd pollution. And now we are all having to drive 20mph! What is wrong with him??!!!
