Official figures from the NHS. Meanwhile stupid people are protesting outside hospitals calling it a hoax and other people are busy on social media telling others it's a con and the vaccine is highly dangerous.

And other stupid people are blaming the government. It makes me despair I'm afraid. People are their own worst enemies.

Firebreak.....stoopid phone.

I think the government would have been very unpopular indeed if they extended that Firebreak. But it should have happened, along with part schooling.

KeyboardWorriers · 08/01/2021 00:02

I don't think the govt should have shouldered all the blame for Christmas day. Most sensible people I know, when they saw the stats, decided to not mix on Christmas day.

Those that did mix, probably would have done so even if it had not been allowed.

I do think allowing schools back for one day this term was criminally negligent though and really I am beyond astonished there haven't been resignations yet over that.

RosesforMama · 08/01/2021 00:03

I have seen my 80 year old mother once this last year, in July, because I am protecting her. It would have been lovely to see her or my mil (not seen since March) but I decided not to take the risk at Christmas.

I am very sad for people who took a gamble and have spread infection in their family. I am upset with the people who scattered out from the South East for Christmas bringing the new variant. Let's just hope enough people keep their kids home that we can get numbers down by Easter.

@switchitup99

A friend told me of a friend today admitted to hospital

Caribbean British, had a big family Christmas with adult children because it is the family way... all went down with Covid before New Year Eve.... Dad, mid 50's, BAME, overweight, diabetic.... now in hospital with the whole family praying......

I hate our Government. This one is on them

No one forced them to mix. Sorry but we have to take individual responsibility too. I always have a huge family Christmas. Just us this year was strange but felt like the right thing to do

switchitup99 Oh FFS...........Can't you see how incredibly ignorant, arrogant, and foolish you sound? This one is on that particular family. Is the Dad's weight the Government's fault as well? And mentioning that the family is Caribbean British seems to make it ok as it's their cultural "right". Such bloody selfish, dangerous behaviour. And anyone disagreeing will be called a racist..........I can just see it coming.

This article in the Guardian is quite shocking too.

@abitofpeace

Sometimes I get tired of people blaming the government. Common sense should have been used at Christmas, many people just want to offload the blame. I’m not even a Tory voter but feel sorry for Boris Johnson. On one hand there are the Covid deniers, on the other people who understand the severity of the situation.
Totally agree re tired of blaming government all the time. People didn’t have to queue up in Boxing day sales etc. Blaming the gov for absolutely everything excuses the stupidity of the general public.
switchitup99 · 08/01/2021 00:10

I blame the Government. They said you'll be okay at Christmas.

I chose to be alone. My family chose to be alone. We are who we are.

This guy is who this guy is. Boris said he would be okay at Christmas.

ClaireP20 · 08/01/2021 00:12

I agree with you OP, but people have always hijacked events and situations to further their own cause, and it will always be so.

KeyboardWorriers · 08/01/2021 00:14

Boris never said you would be ok at christmas ffs. He said you were legally allowed to mix. The govt scientists gave some pretty stark warnings about the risk of doing so and urged people not to.

The people I know who did mix almost all chose to isolate for at least 10 days before going so.

MargotLovedTom1 · 08/01/2021 00:15

Well, they hardly said it would be OK! There was lots of talk of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

switchitup99 · 08/01/2021 00:18

MN is not indicative of the general population. MN is more educated.

ineedaholidaynow · 08/01/2021 00:20

You would have to be pretty stupid to think COVID would have a Christmas break too. Mixing at Christmas was never going to be a good idea, unless you had all fully isolated for at least 2 weeks before

CakeByTheSea · 08/01/2021 00:20

Go onto iPlayer and watch to the BBC News Channel’s interview today at roughly 4.40pm with Professor John Bell Oxford immunologist. Factual, reassuring and interesting.

Today being Thursday 7th January

Actually in this case, I think the family made their decision. Just because it’s the family way?

Everyone knew things were serious.Very sad for them, though.

MiniTheMinx · 08/01/2021 00:27

How will they ration care? If the average life expectancy is 81 , and average covid death 82 is it reasonable and ethical to deny hospital care to anyone over 80? In the Guardian it says staff are having to decide who gets treatment. All the while the people least likely to survive are still taking up beds, still on oxygen, still needing nursing care. This is a shit show, and this is absolutely on this government. I'm a keyworker......i don't much need to work so this fucking ridiculous government can find someone else to do my job. I'm so utterly sick of sacrifices now. Not sacrafices for society and others, I'm fine with that. I'm just sick of working in unsafe conditions, and sick of this governments complete disregard for us all. I'm fucked if I'll look after vulnerable adults only to find no care for myself should I need it......and still waiting for a vacine.

Changemaname1 · 08/01/2021 00:29

this is why I get so frustrated with “ but the rulllezzz” no the government didn’t say it would be ok at Christmas ffs !!

I agree they shouldn’t have put ideas in people’s head with the original 5 day break plan however no one said it was safe it was simply relaxed for a day to “legally” allow no consequence if people chose to risk it on what is an important day for many during a shit year .

Anyone who is ill off the back of that it’s unfortunate obviously and I would wish anyone a quick and full recovery from this virus whether they abide by rules or they don’t but to spout shite like “ they said it was ok” is fkin infuriating to be honest

I agree with you. I think it must be so incredibly difficult for the government because they're trying to stay ahead of an unknown entity. Everyone is looking to apportion blame and is wise in hindsight. Overall I admire Boris's handling of it. I also personally like how Kier Starmer/Labour party have supported the government in many ways in order to present a united front. Critical where need be in and supportive where necessary.

I definitely feel proud of the vaccine role out, the army is also doing a great job of working with the NHS.

Very sobering death toll today, really upset me, hopefully we'll soon be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

RedMarauder · 08/01/2021 00:32

@LindyLou2020 I'm black I know equally as thoughtless people of all skin colours who thought it was ok to mix at Christmas putting their vulnerable family members at risk. Knowing how some of them never take any personal responsibility they will be blaming the government, schools or someone else if any of their families get hospitalised with their Covid infections.

TorringtonDean · 08/01/2021 00:35

I don’t think we’ve got as far as the Christmas deaths yet - it takes two or three weeks before the infected person gets to hospital and then a bit longer sadly for the deaths.

Boris was told about eight weeks before Christmas to put the country in lockdown. He kept putting it off and putting it off. The second lockdown wasn’t a lockdown at all, everyone ignored it.

Offering the prospect of the Christmas window put quite a lot of pressure on people to see family. Then it was taken away in tier 4 but I expect a lot of families would have still gone ahead with plans because of all sorts of pressure from relatives who didn’t want to miss out.

Then the week before schools broke up Gavin Williamson was threatening to sue councils who wanted to close their schools early e.g. Greenwich. That seems madness in view of the figures now.

TheVanguardSix · 08/01/2021 00:37

At this stage, who is or is not to blame, is irrelevant.

We had a quiet Christmas. Our kids' school didn't have one covid case and never had to close. DH's test came back positive on the 28th of December. He is a frontline worker and likely got it from face to face contact with patients on the 23rd, his last day of work before Christmas. He's in hospital now on a CPAP machine. Who do I blame? The patients he came into contact with? Who do they blame? We're on a hiding to nothing if blame becomes our focus.

dottiedaisee · 08/01/2021 00:37

So I have just got home after working an extra shift at the care home I work at! Stats now
2residents died on the 5th
4 residents died on the 6th
2 residents died 7th ...truly heartbreaking, absolutely none of them had poor quality of life.
Am back to work tomorrow pm and am expecting 2 residents to not be alive by then . They were all active beautiful old people who should have had a good quality of life for a much longer time 😣

sammyjoanne · 08/01/2021 00:38

Christmas Day, New years eve, Easter, Divali, etc......

It doesnt matter. Covid does not take the day off. Anyone mingling on any day can catch covid. Just because Boris said It will be fine to meet up at Christmas doesn't make it go away all of a sudden. Now we are getting the high figures from Christmas and New year period come through.
Its not just students having parties back in September /October, its families too at Christmas with multiple households.

Fancycrackers · 08/01/2021 00:40

People need to stop blaming the government. Yes this government is slow to act, unable to make any difficult decisions and downright idiotic (eat out to help out! Mix at Christmas!)... But I am sick to the eyeballs at the lack of personal responsibility some people are displaying and arguing the toss that the rules and basic common sense don't apply to them, even during a global, escalating pandemic.

Yes I can tell you the NHS is literally buckling now, especially in London. How about take some personal responsibility and really just stay at home and don't mix unnecessarily.
