Another Birthday with Corona

DD’s 11th Birthday celebration was supposed to be a big trip to universal studios in Florida to do everything Harry Potter related in honor of it being her hogwarts letter year. She dreamed of this trip for 4 years. Our bags were packed when we got the news that everything was closing.

It’s obvious that we will still be in lockdown or something close to it when her 12th birthday rolls around. Dd suffers from anxiety and “high functioning” autism and she has worked so hard to accept so many disappointments and life changes this year. DH is ECV so we have to be extremely cautious.

I’m completely stumped on how to make this birthday special.

Hi OP, this thread had some really good ideas for lockdown birthday parties:

I was in the same position this year and it’s so hard for all dc but particularly those with ASD, we can’t even visit the animals that ds loves.
What about a special video message from someone related to Harry Potter (is that still her thing?). I know you can buy them from some actors.

An amazing birthday cake and a fire pit in the garden with s’mores?

I am not very clued up on HP so sorry if that’s not much help.

I strongly suspect that DS2's in for a second buggered up birthday. It was within the first few weeks of lockdown. Being a bit tardy in planning, I realised that it wasn't worth trying to book a party/ outing as things looked dodgy for the forthcoming weeks, and I promised him that he could have a party as soon as possible... looks like he's going to be owed 2 parties as we'll be doing well to be down to tier 3 by then...

My sympathies. ASD makes things particularly difficult to manage expectations and make alternative plans.

Sorry your daughters missing out in what sounds like an amazing trip.

However will she understand if you try to explain to her the reasons why it's not safe right now?

Oh bless her. So horrible when they have had their heart set on something for so long.

My Dds birthday is at the end of March, so she turned 6 just ass lockdown started, although it was no different than it would've been as we'd just moved and she hadn't stated her new school yet so we didn't know anyone to come over for tea anyway.

But I really feel for those who have had plans cancelled.
