Why the government won’t do a proper lockdown?

The NHS say for LONDON they will likely be short by 2000 to 5000 beds.

They won’t be treating people who are in a road traffic accidents or have a heart attack. I cannot even begin to imagine what the staff are going through.

Can someone people explain why the government are not stepping in and:

  • rethinking the number of “key” worker children they have permitted to attend. 50% of kids in school is not sustainable.
  • make it illegal for unscrupulous employers to not allow staff to work from home who perfectly are able to.
  • close cafes
  • close click and collect
  • police enforce breaches
  • close garden centres and other non essential retail
  • anything else I’ve missed...

We will all be locked up for longer with this halfway house and more people will die.

They need to act fast.

@TheKeatingFive

You do realise that we also need an economy otherwise we are all f#cked???

I don’t think people do get that.

They haven’t the slightest notion of the devastation that’s going to hit public services very soon. I can only imagine the outrage from them when finally dawns.

Who doesn’t get that? Have you considered that perhaps people see a bigger picture as to how economic recovery can be achieved and be stable. The people in charge of this shit show are the ones who don’t seem to be able to connect the two and make timely, effective decisions.

But then I’ve spent the last four years writing off the economy for a few years because of brexit so for me the a 70’s style economic environment was already on the cards. This is another problem on the list.

On the plus side we’ve come through disasters financially before and can do it again. Peoples expectations are just going to have to readjust.

On the plus side we’ve come through disasters financially before and can do it again. Peoples expectations are just going to have to readjust.

But we're in an unprecedented situation - the blunt instrument of lockdown after lockdown will likely result in the deepest recession of modern years which is resulting in increased poverty and numerous job losses and caused many mental health issues, some of which are new (linked to the new kind of restrictions on our lives). Already this feels much worse from the 2008 financial crisis and I don't like you minimising this fucking awful nightmare.

Cornettoninja · 08/01/2021 15:19

I’m not minimising anything @southeastdweller. The ability of our country to recover depends on a reasonably healthy population being able to work and feel safe to go out and spend. People don’t do that when they realise they risk getting in a car and there’s no medical care coming if they have an accident. Nor can workplaces operate at a profit with large numbers of staff and customers at home sick. The longer it takes to get case numbers under control the longer you have to wait to get the economy moving.

Frankly if people hadn’t bitched about restrictions in November and insisted on a definite end date not dictated by case numbers we would of had a decent chance of getting through winter in a much better position. As it is we’re in a bigger hole than we were but I’m not about to apologise for holding on to a shred of optimism and faith that we can climb out of it again over time.

This doesn’t have to be the financial Armageddon people are determined to make it. You’re talking yourself into a stupor.

To look at your list:

  • rethinking the number of “key” worker children they have permitted to attend. 50% of kids in school is not sustainable AGREE
  • make it illegal for unscrupulous employers to not allow staff to work from home who perfectly are able to AGREE
  • close cafes they are closed (or should be)
  • close click and collect no, see below
  • police enforce breaches ha ha have you seen the thread about the so-called "picnic" in Derbyshire?
  • close garden centres and other non essential retail AGREE for face to face, not for click and collect (or phone and deliver)
Jangle33 · 08/01/2021 17:00

Well the press are now reporting on the unsustainable number of key worker children and the fact the virus levels won’t go down. I hope this gains traction.

The press talk absolute shit. I read an an article today which completely missed out the other side of the situation and it was incredibly biased - covid related.

Don’t read the rags.
