They knew a vaccine would be the only way of getting us out of this mess. The country has already been locked down twice. Why, why, why didn’t they use this time to set up the logistics of distributing and administering these vaccines?

Why, why, why are the government allowed to decide who to prioritise to receive these vaccines when they were always going to distribute in a way that benefits them. Surely any government with an ounce of realism would be self aware enough to realise that they would make this vaccine distribution a political decision and instead allow the decision to be made by an independent third party who can distribute it in a way that would allow the country to get back to work. Instead it’s likely that months and months down the line we’ll all be forced to go back to work despite still be unprotected.

I have visions of pensioners being able to swan off on holiday over the summer while the workers of the country will still be unable to.

It’s an absolute fucking farce. Watching that press conference last night just finally made it snap for me - they genuinely don’t know what they’re doing at all

@OrchestraOfWankery

Well that was rather a rude response.

The elderly didn't need to attend raves, bubbling with 3 or 4 other households plus shopping trips, meals out and taxi rides was enough to cause the chaos in many hospitals.

I have a large extended family spreading 4 generations and this has led me to the conclusion that the elderly members, those over about 80, have had the least disruption to their lives over the last year. None of them have had financial problems nor lost jobs, none have had their education disrupted, none of them have been working for the NHS nor spent each day in a classroom with 30 kids. And to be honest none of them have made great sacrifices to their life styles compared to the younger generations.

So I stick to what I initially said

"We could have cut hospital admissions and saved the NHS if Boris had told the elderly, where possible, that they should shield back in Oct/Nov. Instead he wanted blanket rules for us all so many older people have been bubbling away and having numerous unnecessary contacts."

If the elderly had made those sacrifices, business's and schools would still be open as Boris has already said that will be the case once the 'protective shield of a vaccine' is wrapped around the elderly and vulnerable. It's about reducing deaths and protecting the NHS, not about protecting everyone, so a protective shield of isolating for a few weeks would have been just as effective. If the elderly had done that months ago then I would be more inclined to seeing them as a priority now after the older (at risk) working population, so teachers, NHS, care workers, retail and hospitality employees, police etc

venusandmars · 06/01/2021 11:35

And none of us will be swanning off on holidays abroad...

Littlewhitedove2 · 06/01/2021 11:35

I can tell you for a fact that frontline nurses are being vaccinated right now.
It’s not about anyone swanning off on holiday, being able to work, or kids being able to go to school. Healthcare trumps all of that. At the moment they believe there will be greatly reduced healthcare facilities for the general public in the uk very shortly.
Vaccination programme has one primary goal at this current stage, relieve hospitals of admissions. That’s it. Nothing more. So everything is geared towards that.
Workers, kids, people keeping their jobs, mental health, poverty, EVErYTHING else comes second to providing healthcare.
If your child needed an ambulance and none came you would soon change your mind.

@Ponypizzy

Thanks *@BigWoollyJumpers* I think we all need a bit of reassurance, confidence level are low and emotions and running high.
Ponypizzy this article helps to explain the situation news.sky.com/story/covid-19-almost-3-5-million-uk-vaccines-held-up-by-regulator-12180185 It really is a very difficult and complex undertaking, no matter how hard people work.
mam0918 · 06/01/2021 11:38

the working population isnt the heavyload on the NHS or the majority of fatalities, it would be stupid to vaccinate the low medical risk first just because they are high contact risk - this thread proves why unmedically trained people should not be allowed to make these decision.

sheslittlebutfierce · 06/01/2021 11:40

@the80sweregreat

The working population should get the vaccine first. Makes sense to me but I'm sure someone will come along and say I'm wrong!
Flamed for even asking why the elderly were being prioritised earlier this week.
Somethingsosimple · 06/01/2021 11:41

Why should my wonderful 97 year old gran who lives independently have to live her last few years without holding her great gran children, being so lonely and isolated. I think people are trying to say elderly people don’t deserve to have their freedom.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 11:42

@wherehavetheteletubbies gone so really you are worried you may miss your holiday
Have you not read a single post on here as to why the vaccinations are rolled out the way they are.
We all want a vaccine but someone has to be last what makes you more worthy than me ( mid 40's )
The economy would be shut down for longer and lucky you that you are working from home , many if us are not.
So you also think cev who are above you on the list should wait ? As you know many of the have jobs and work a well .
Implying old people only having the jab so they can go to a garden centre or coffee shop?
Many older people will die of this , many old people look after their gc, many old people work or volunteer.
The goverment did not decide the order medical professionals did , whO I think have a better understanding and prob think saving lives is better than saving holidays

Lovemusic33 · 06/01/2021 11:44

Elderly and vulnerable are being vaccinated first to reduce the number of hospital admissions and deaths, pretty simple to understand, it’s always been the plan and that should continue.

I do agree that teachers should be up there in the priority group but not all working people, most healthy under 60’s will not become seriously ill if they catch covid unless they had underlying conditions. People need to just wait their turn.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 11:46

@Thingybob what should they have been locked in their houses? Not eaten , had no carers come in to attend , not gone to hospital or appts
Just sat in on their own and then they would if not been impacted ? Really can you not see how wrong this would be and also wouldn't of worked anyway

alreadytaken · 06/01/2021 11:46

Mumsnet was all "protect the vulnerable and let the rest of us get on with our lives" until it was actually possible to protect the vulnerable.

Well you got on with your lives and it wasnt possible to protect the vulnerable, the virus got into care homes, it reached the grandparents doing unpaid childcare. A fair number died and health care is on its knees trying to stop even more dying. But now it's possible to do something about that it's quite clear your only concern is yourself. And because you got on with your lives and ignored the rules sensible people didnt go out and spend.

You need elderly people back out there spending money. You may not work in the holiday industry but the people who do spend in the places that keep you in work.

Now there may be no ambulance for your child, women will have no choice over where they give birth, cancer patients cant get urgent operations. You have blood on your hands and you want more of it.

Lovemusic33 · 06/01/2021 11:46

My 94 year old grandmother is having her vaccination on Saturday and I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. Of course elderly people should be priority, many live alone and have been away from their families for a year not knowing if they will see them again.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 11:46

@sheslittlebutfierce well a little research would tell you why its in the order it is

Nanny0gg · 06/01/2021 11:46

@BathFullOfEels

I think it should be front line NHS workers and care home workers, then teachers and schools staff so the kids can return, then all key workers and shielding, all working age people so the country can work again, then 60+.
The vaccine, as far as we know, protects the patient but doesn't necessarily stop them spreading it. So pupils could still bring it home from school

The order it's being done in is to stop the most likely people needing and totally overwhelm the already over-pressured hospitals

Thingybob · 06/01/2021 11:47

I did say earlier non essential contacts.

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2021 11:48

Mumsnet was all "protect the vulnerable and let the rest of us get on with our lives" until it was actually possible to protect the vulnerable.

Was it? Most threads seem to have plenty of posters who recognise that restrictions are rotten to live with but necessary at the moment.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 11:50

@xenia with 50000 to 60000 cases a day and with unions and teachers threatening to walk out anyway you wouldn't of closed the schools ?

ktp100 · 06/01/2021 11:52

Because they're useless, ill suited for the job, stubborn, focused on party politics over the health of the public and willing to spunk public money away on contracts that don't materialise from new companies started by their friends to monopolise profits from Covid over other contractors who could actually deliver.

In short, they are SCUM.

Britain is getting what it asked for, or rather voted for.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 11:55

@ktp100 no content to your post other than to bash the goverment and this isn't what the post is about and actually its the one thing they really have got right

LindyLou2020 · 06/01/2021 11:56

@Flaxmeadow

The hatred towards elderly people on here is mind blowing
I agree, and it's not just on this thread. Shameful, from a community of so-called mothers........

@PurpleDaisies there were a lot yes
And this thread speaks volumes about how Som people think

viccat · 06/01/2021 11:57

One of the biggest problems throughout has been communication. There's been all this overly optimistic messaging throughout about getting back to normal by X, Y, Z. The efficacy of the vaccines and their approval was hyped up way too much so that many people started expecting things to be back to normal within a couple of weeks. If you listened to the scientists and not just Johnson and Hancock's lies, it was obvious all along it would take a long time to get people vaccinated because this is a global effort. And we need it to be a global effort because the more the virus spreads, the more it mutates as we've seen already...

Glass vials for example are in short supply because for the first time ever there's a huge spike in demand for them for this (it's a specialist glass so can't just be easily produced in greater numbers). We'll get there but the vaccination rollout starting was just the end of the beginning and not some instant fix.

Chemenger · 06/01/2021 11:59

Everyone who so dislikes the old now might want to consider how desperately they want to become old one day, because there is only one other alternative. You will be amazed one day to wake up and find yourself on the wrong side of 55, feeling just like you did 20 or 30 years before, on the inside.
