How many people are in your children’s classes at the moment?

I’ve been reading the threads on here about how overwhelmed schools are for keyworker and vulnerable children places and this is so totally different to my experience! Are most schools overwhelmed by people needing keyworker/vulnerable children places?
For context i have two children who go to different primary schools in the West Midlands , dd who is 4 has 4 children in her year in out of 60 and dd who is 10 has 7 children in her year in out of 30.

OP posts:

28 children out of 240. I seriously doubt that the teachers will 'drop like flies'

seven201 · 05/01/2021 22:31

9/90 in my son's reception year today. They're being really strict with both parents being a critical worker and checking what exact job you do.

Chanandlerbong01 · 05/01/2021 22:31

We have 84 out of a school of 600, it’s a secondary school and the majority are vulnerable rather than key workers.
We’ve organised it by ability/emotional needs across the school rather than year groups as the year group bubbles don’t really matter now and we’ve kept siblings/cousins together to reduce the chance of closing multiple bubbles.

Not there no, they will when classes are full as normal though. Many schools are. It’s a big issue in lots of schools across the country. Lots of chatter about it today.

@Terryscombover

The definition of vulnerable was updated recently to include children without a quiet place to work or access to laptop/tablet. Might significantly swell the numbers in some areas.
A friend is a TA and her head declared every single child in the school vulnerable on this basis. Fortunately, the parents had more sense, and only about 1/3 sent their kids in.

I teach secondary and we had about 40 kids in today, which is more than last time, but few enough that we can easily distance the children and ourselves.

As well as increasing the risk of community spread, I think there is a real risk that some schools will end up totally shutting, due to staff absence- especially assuming the lateral flow tests pick up some asymptomatic cases in secondary school staff.

@TwoCupsOfLemonTea
We’ve got 75%!!

Foilball · 06/01/2021 05:53

Less than 10% in, but not evenly spread amongst year groups (two year groups with just one child in, poor souls and year group with highest number in had 8)

Is that the numbers in your school? That seems pretty sensible, sadly similar percentages aren't replicated across other schools.

dippyegg32 · 06/01/2021 07:04

I'm a teacher in a private primary. All 15 of my class are remote learning.

Maybe not at your School where you’ve only 11.6% of children in, there are 75% of children in at my school. One of my colleagues is seriously ill in hospital now with Covid, so yes, teachers are likely to ‘drop like flies’ in schools with higher numbers.

oohmamama · 06/01/2021 07:08

I think in general on the teachers pages you get the outraged staff whose schools have big numbers. Why bother posting if numbers are ok?! It's not necessarily a true representation of what's happening.

My daughters class has 5/25 in so 20% which seems reasonable. Where I teach (special unit) we will have 10-12/50 so similar ratio - all vulnerable though rather than KW kids.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 06/01/2021 07:26

Large primary, 3 classes per year. There are 6 children in DDs class out of the normal 26.

Forgetmenot157 · 06/01/2021 07:30

@TwoCupsOfLemonTea

Way too many! (Around 50%)

There literally is no point in locking down if we have this many children in the schools.

The schools will close properly - even for key worker children - soon as the staff will start to drop like flies and there will be literally no one left to teach.

This is down to the schools to police it tho, making sure there is proof etc of keyworker status
Motherwell91 · 06/01/2021 07:45

Numbers of children in school really low here my dd was the only Yr 3 in yesterday so was 1on1 with her teacher all day. According to an email only 18 kids for the whole school was in yesterday

Frazzled2207 · 08/01/2021 19:29

Our school have been militant about not letting in - asking us to form childcare bubbles instead. Not sure how many kids they have but at a guess less than 30%. And there are a LOT of key worker (teacher/hcp) families

deeplybaffled · 08/01/2021 19:36

Just over 25% in ours - around 80/315 across the whole school ( primary)

SuperbGorgonzola · 08/01/2021 19:38

1200 on roll, secondary. About 40-50 students in per day.

humtar · 08/01/2021 19:47

26/60. Irony is I've had to put both my DCs into their school so that I can be in school.
11 of our children are in because their parents work in education - a mix of early years, primary, secondary teachers and support staff. They are having to be in their schools more, or providing live teaching from home, so are having to send their children in.

Coasterfan · 08/01/2021 19:47

We are in the East Midlands, DS is not in school but quite a few of his friendship group are, they say each year 6 class has 10/35. Last year there were 8/70 in for the whole year so quite a few more but still only a third. Hopefully they can space out well and it’s safer for everyone, we are ok at home!

WeAreShiningStars · 08/01/2021 19:50

Our local secondary has roughly 25% of its students in. We are keeping ours home.

CalmDownBoris72 · 08/01/2021 19:53

Primary here and had a letter from school to say 40% occupancy and no plans to reduce that. They also have 15% of staff with covid or isolating!

poshme · 08/01/2021 19:54

15/60 in DD year group.

PicsInRed · 08/01/2021 19:54

We only have about 5% in, but the school has been very strict around eligibility.

middleager · 08/01/2021 19:54

22 out of 30 at a primary I work with.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2021 19:56

I have no idea - the only way I could find out is to ask one of the mums who is using the provision - so it would be a pretty awkward question when the implied question is how many people are taking the piss.
