DH just lost job. No furlough.

Just that.

Because of this new lockdown his factory are shutting down. He's only been there for a month so doesn't qualify for furlough. He asked his old company to re-employ and furlough (completely legal) and they gave refused despite it not costing them a penny.

I can't stop crying. My part time wage just covers our rent with £50 spare. Universal Credit claim can take up to 6 weeks possibly more. We have 2 DD's.

I don't know why I'm posting, but need to have an outlet. DH suffers from depression so has just dropped into a pit of despair.

I’m sorry you have received this news today and I’m hoping the universal credit comes through quicker than that for you.

LastRoloIsMine · 05/01/2021 14:36

Once you apply for UC you can request an advance which you pay back over several months so please make the application ASAP.

iwishiwasatcentralperk · 05/01/2021 14:38

oh that's sad. Sadly it does cost the old employer, as your DH will accrue holiday and they also still have to pay the NIC if applicable.

UC can make an advance payment, so you can ask for that in your online journal.

If you run through this calculator, it should tell you what help you are entitled to

caringcarer · 05/01/2021 14:38

So very sorry you are having to go through this. It must be do worrying with 2 children and you only working part time. I know there are not many jobs out there ATM but your DH needs to try to get in before more lose their jobs. Start a U C claim immediately. I am not sure if building society is still freezing mortgages got those affected by Covid but I would be to g straight away. He won't get redundancy if only been there a short time. Have you got stuff you could sell on eBay? It might keep you going a short while to buy food. Have you got family who can help support you financially? Don't know what else to add. Just do sorry. Could kids get free school meals?

Finfintytint · 05/01/2021 14:38

Can he sign up with an agency until he can find something permanent?

JazzyGeoff · 05/01/2021 14:41

That's shit, sorry Flowers

Any chance at all of you increasing your hours in the short term, whilst he's out of work?

caringcarer · 05/01/2021 14:41

Contact LL and ask if you can pay half rent and make it up later date. They might be kind and say yes.

FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 14:50

Thanks all. I feel physically sick. I just keep looking at the kids and then I start welling up. They haven't got a clue what's going on, but the thought of not being able to provide for them is just...... I just don't know 😭

Bookriddle · 05/01/2021 14:53

We got a advance of £1500 when we applied, about a week ot took us!

Orf1abc · 05/01/2021 14:58

Get the application in for UC and then take some time for both of you to relax, give yourselves a break. Job searching can start tomorrow, agencies are a good idea. Contact your local food bank if you need it, there's no judgment, they want to help.

You will get through this, I promise.

TheABC · 05/01/2021 15:00

Start the UC application, immediately. I would also look around for any job going; courier/food delivery/postman - anything. This is the time to ask for help from family and friends or (at worst), you can apply to the food bank.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

SlothMama · 05/01/2021 15:05

Start the UC application today, and get him looking on job sites there's work out there. It might not be what he wants but it'll pay the bills. Good luck x

MushMonster · 05/01/2021 15:11

So sorry OPFlowers
Get to universal credit and your local authority today.
Get all your info.
See if they can advance you some money. Or there is any provision in these cases.
Aplso, there are quite a few jobs going around in delivery, supermarkets, and so. There is quite a bit being advertised locally.
Many companies have people isolating, so agencies are getting people to cover for those.
Keep looking.
I wish you all the best.

It costs them as a minimum: NI Pension Accrued holiday pay

So it does cost quite considerably

Fgs1 · 05/01/2021 15:30

Does he drive? If so he will get work. Also supermarkets likely to hire more staff again. And yes apply for universal credit you might be entitled to more than you realise

I dont know where you live but there have been no jobs of any kind here whether you drive or not (large tourist town reliant on tourism and hospitality)
nevernotstruggling · 05/01/2021 15:42

Supermarkets and Amazon are hiring like mad down here in Devon he should look at that. Morrisons desperate for people who will work full time

MegaClutterSlut · 05/01/2021 15:46

He may be able to claim jsa too? Also as others said put in your UC claim straight away. It took 5 weeks for us to get our first payment but you can get an advance. Dh was made redundant in October so I know how shit and scary it is

vanillandhoney · 05/01/2021 15:49

Get on to Universal Credit ASAP and then ask for an advance in your online journal. You should be able to access some money from them fairly promptly. Your DH may also be eligible for JSA.

I would also get him signed up to all the online job sites, and have a look on social media pages. There are jobs going here - cleaning, supermarket work, delivery drivers and carers - he may well be able to find something. Or what about applying to administer the new vaccine?

I'm so sorry this is happening Flowers

FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 15:49

Thankyou all Flowers

We've never been in this kind of situation before DH is 43 and has never been unemployed. This job was his dream job, and would have opened doors to us that were previously closed. I think we are just a bit shell-shocked. They've also said that even when they reopen the job probably won't be there which I really don't understand considering the job it was, and they've got shed loads of orders to fill. I'm just a bit baffled.

Jent13c · 05/01/2021 15:50

We were there at the last lockdown. It such a horrible feeling, especially as everyone around you is complaining about the lack of flour in the supermarket that they cant do baking projects with their children and you are worried about how you will even give your kids a meal the next few days. We were in that for 6 months, thankfully I'm a nurse so I could take on an extra shift but it was extremely tight.

Make sure you've applied for everything you can, job seekers, universal credit, council tax relief, rent reduction from landlord. Once you are entitled to these benefits you may be able to access further ones such as best start grants and food grants. Get in touch with your health visitor or school nurse, get referred to a food bank. Let your friends and family know, most jobs come from a contact. And don't be too proud to accept their help, I had to move house with my kids mid lockdown without DH (stuck away) and no one could help with the move, I had very little furniture and no wifi or tv. My best friend text to say she was on her way with a cottage pie to drop off, I honestly cried.

It will get better, we were in that hole for 6 months and then all of a sudden he was offered 4 jobs and took the most secure. It's just a blip and you will get back on your feet.

MegaClutterSlut · 05/01/2021 15:53

He should be entitled to jsa or esa whatever its called now which is about £146 every 2 weeks as well as UC

Lottie4 · 05/01/2021 16:00

As mentioned above, really worth looking at local supermarkets and anywhere that delivers, if only for temporary work. If you're in a university town, worth contacting direct as I suspect a few students won't go back to their term-time jobs. It might not pay much, but still better than nothing. Also, OP it might be worth you looking for a temporary job to help - just for a while and DH can look after everything at home.

LangClegsInSpace · 05/01/2021 16:09

So sorry OP Flowers

It may be better NOT to apply for UC straight away if he is still waiting for his last pay day. This is because UC calculate income based on when it lands in your account rather than when it was earned.

If he has outstanding wages it's best to apply the day after he is paid.
