DH just lost job. No furlough.

Just that.

Because of this new lockdown his factory are shutting down. He's only been there for a month so doesn't qualify for furlough. He asked his old company to re-employ and furlough (completely legal) and they gave refused despite it not costing them a penny.

I can't stop crying. My part time wage just covers our rent with £50 spare. Universal Credit claim can take up to 6 weeks possibly more. We have 2 DD's.

I don't know why I'm posting, but need to have an outlet. DH suffers from depression so has just dropped into a pit of despair.

First lockdown a former colleague who had been made redundant in the feb asked if we would remploy to furlough, as she was a great member of staff and was a sad loss we did it, as soon as it started costing us we ended it which she was fine with and grateful for. No one else asked to my knowledge and if I’m honest I don’t think any others or many would have been allowed
Now it does cost the business like others have said not forgetting all the paperwork and red tape it involves. The gov kept changing the rules of furlough through lockdown 1 and despite being a large company with a legal team it still took a lot of manpower at a time when most were on furlough

I hope the DPD roles comes off. Driving and industrial work is where the growth is currently, look at local manufacturing companies or warehouses for roles
I work for an agency and this week lots of businesses are pulling temp roles as they can’t allow people to wfh so office type roles will be few and far between for a while

@Littleposh I take it you don’t work in benefits in any capacity whatsoever going by your no idea and explain ??!! replies.

Not wanting to derail the thread, it was not the OPs situation you spoke about but your advice that everyone should claim UC just in case. That was a ridiculous statement and you still haven’t explained your reasons why.

Timing depends on when your job ends, when you are paid, your pay pattern. Legacy benefits will take years to phase out, conditionality varies greatly, women on maternity are worse off, people on the sick struggle to get assessed and the decision making on EU nationals is woeful.

@hayleysmiles if staff are working over 50 hours a week no wonder so many mistakes are made. I don’t doubt most staff are working hard, it is the process that is a mess.

So sorry to hear this. I’m not sure how helpful this will be but I have seen locally to me, so very likely all around the country, Covid 19 test centre assistants are wanted and quite a few people are needed. Look on Indeed and type Covid in the search bar with your town and search. I have a few friends out of work who applied this week as no specific experience/skills needed.

Try Hermes or amazon. I know they get a bad press but they're hiring like mad. If you get deliveries your best bet is to ask the courier for their managers number or ask if they want any cover.

Good luck!

candycane222 · 06/01/2021 10:32

My DS is driving for Amazon (via a contractor to Amazon) and it isn't too bad. Rounds are doable, works out around £10-£11 hour on a quieter day, although less on a busy one (self employed so paid per round, but gets to use their vans).

ohtheholidays · 06/01/2021 15:02

I'm sorry for what your going through OP.

I don't know what it's like in your area but they're always looking for delivery drivers where we live for places like Deliveroo.

I don't know how old your DD's are but if they at at school and if your change of cicumstances means you can claim free school meals if you don't already then start claiming them, tons of schools are sending out vouchers for supermarkets, other schools are sending out food.

If your struggling for food or your going to there are lots more foodbanks that have been set up since the first lockdown if you look online you should be able to find your nearest one and what you need to do to be able to use them.

DH has an interview Monday!!!! 😁😁

...... and its for a job that he applied for and got at the beginning of last year, and got it, but he was offered a little more to stay at his old place. He sent off his CV for the job via a recruitment agency, they passed it on and the bloke recognised his name and wants him in for a chat!!!!!! 🤞

So pleased for you! I haven't had to deal with anything quite like this but I remember the feeling when my husband came home and said the company he worked for had gone into receivership December 2019.

Hope everything works out for you both.

MushMonster · 08/01/2021 19:23
