DH just lost job. No furlough.

Just that.

Because of this new lockdown his factory are shutting down. He's only been there for a month so doesn't qualify for furlough. He asked his old company to re-employ and furlough (completely legal) and they gave refused despite it not costing them a penny.

I can't stop crying. My part time wage just covers our rent with £50 spare. Universal Credit claim can take up to 6 weeks possibly more. We have 2 DD's.

I don't know why I'm posting, but need to have an outlet. DH suffers from depression so has just dropped into a pit of despair.

Great advice here.

Yes to UC, delivery jobs and JSA.

If you work can you increase your hours and DH becomes a SAHP or works shifts around you?

FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 16:39

Thankyou.

Checked supermarkets and nothing in our area 😔 BIL works for DPD and says they have a position that needs filing ASAP on the depot round the corner from us and that his boss is going to give DH a ring tonight. BIL is a bit of a Walter Mitty character though, so not holding my breath! 😔

His old employer was totally correct

nevernotstruggling · 05/01/2021 16:41

@FirstladyKirkman I would get on the phone to the depot in the am -they can only say no x

sarahC40 · 05/01/2021 16:43

Tell your kids schools pronto as they may well be able to offer help (vouchers are being delivered from mine from today). Good luck to you.

BeakyWinder · 05/01/2021 16:47

Is his new company shutting down forever or for lockdown? If it's temporary can the leave the door open for him for future and he gets onto UC/temporary work for the lockdown?

stovetopespresso · 05/01/2021 16:48

God that sounds really tough so sorry tochear this op. citizens advice can help with benefits advice too. over the phone obviously and hopefully the wait shouldn't be too long

FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 16:48

@Sup1979

That's fine. However, they didn't use the "No we can't do it because of XYZ" they used the exact words "You left us, why the fuck should we do you a favour".

He even offered his services (his job has yet to be filled) at a lower rate of pay as to what he used to be paid. No go.

Then he remembered why he had left.

Can you imagine the guts it must have taken for someone to go back to a previous employer and ask for your old job back, how desperate you must be? I threw up during the time he was gone so christ knows how he felt 😔

Sup1979 · 05/01/2021 16:51

I’m still with the stance of the old employer

He left. Of his own accord. Fair enough.
At the point he left them, the old employer owes him nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Added to which, if that was their response, perhaps he really did leave them in the lurch.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2021 16:52

It's shit but your DH sounds a good man who is willing to do what it takes to get a job and being in some money.

I think that will stand you in good stead.

Sup1979 · 05/01/2021 16:53

Added to which, you can not hire and then immediately furlough!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 05/01/2021 16:55

Do uc application quickly and then you can also request an advance

FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 16:55

@Sup1979

According to CAB and gov.uk you can.

OP posts:
FirstladyKirkman · 05/01/2021 16:56

As per gov.uk

DH just lost job. No furlough.

I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through.

I haven't got much advice other than what has already been suggested, but remember that your landlord wouldn't be able to evict you straight away, so if you have to, miss a payment (or more) and make it up in the future when things are easier. It's not perfect, but you need to buy food. It would be better however if they agreed to it in advance.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 05/01/2021 16:58

Also know how you feel this happened to me first lockdown been at new job about 6 weeks ( perfect job) but they had to shut down , did say wanted me back bit then contacted me july to say look for something elSe as they woul be taking a long time to recover. Also found out later as job was through agency ( temp to perm) agency could of actually put me on furlough which would of been a help but they didn't .

Bookaholic73 · 05/01/2021 17:01

I’m so sorry this has happened to you.

Can you ask your employer if you can work full time instead of PT now, and DH could stay at home with the kids?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 05/01/2021 17:01

Op that refers to if you still work for them can't furlough someone has left and hasn't come back to work for them as they are not an employee anymore

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 05/01/2021 17:01

Which part of the country are you in?

ShalomToYouJackie · 05/01/2021 17:09

It says in that screenshot "this may differ if you stopped working for them on or after 23rd September 2020 and were re-employed".

As others have said, you can get an advance on the UC that you pay off over a chosen period, it's then deducted every month for your monthly payments.

Fingers crossed about that DPD job

Sup1979 · 05/01/2021 17:18

@FirstladyKirkman

As per gov.uk
Yes but he left them!

So fact he was working there 30/10, handed in notice, means that he would be regarded as a “new starter” if they rehired and therefore they couldn’t hire him and immediately put him on furlough

UsernameSaved · 05/01/2021 17:18

@FirstladyKirkman

As per gov.uk
They can but it costs them a fair chunk money- national insurance, pension and accrued holiday pay.

Meaning if you stopped working on or after 23/09 But then rejoined and was working for them 30/10 - would likely not be entitled to furlough
bluebeck · 05/01/2021 17:27

Sorry to hear this OP but I am not quite clear (probably me being thick)

Do you mean DH has been dismissed from his new job along with everyone else, the business has closed down? Or they are furloughing some people but not him?

Can you increase your hours at your job whilst he is unemployed?
Flowers

steff13 · 05/01/2021 17:30

Can you increase your hour to fulltime?
