I know nobody will know for sure until Boris speaketh, but anyone have any intel on whether nurseries and childminders will stay open?

(I've searched existing threads and didn't see anything)

OP posts:

Are childminders also able to open?

BigGreen · 04/01/2021 20:19

Holy shit thank goodness. Nice to see something sensible from this government!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:20

My London nursery as part of primary school is closed - was closed as part of tier 4 closures London nursery but not linked to a school so has been staying open. Those attached to schools have to decide for themselves- but I assume most with close for continuity

whiteflower84 · 04/01/2021 20:20

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Not necessarily smaller settings in nurseries!

We have up to 50/60 children a day, and more often than not a line of 10 parents outside at different times of the day depending on sessions...

BigGreen · 04/01/2021 20:20

He said early years settings @namesnamesnamesnames so I'm assuming so. My DC is at a childminder. It's a natural bubble.

WalkingOnStarshine · 04/01/2021 20:20

I was so worried we'd be without our childminder again, but I almost got up and did a little dance at that announcement! Thank god!

Tanith · 04/01/2021 20:22

Reception classes are Early Years. Are they closed or open, I wonder?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:24

We have up to 50/60 children a day To be fair that is smaller- primary schools are a minimum 30kids per year x 7 year groups, (and our primaries are 3 form entry)- that’s a hell of a lot of parents.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 04/01/2021 20:25

Great for all of us early years staff....not. Yet again we are the forgotten ones.Half of our workforce already of so going to be a nightmare.

whiteflower84 · 04/01/2021 20:34

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

yeah I get that, the majority of schools have a lot more children & parents.

It's still contradictory to close schools but keep nurseries open.

I don't want to be furloughed, especially with a bored toddler believe me but I still think it's very insulting & dismissive of early years workers & their families.. there's no ppe, no social distancing etc in place for us either.

Does Boris know this though?! Grin
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:38

whiteflower84 buts is not contradictory at all, they are different settings.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:41

The thing is for everyone who says
“Don’t you care about nursery staff families”
There’s someone who says
“Don’t you care about nursery staff wages”
For everyone who says
“Don’t you care about the development about my child”
Someone says
“Don’t you care about the health of my child”

But statistically such young children don’t get especially ill from Covid, the transmission is v low.

BertNErnie · 04/01/2021 20:41

@SnottyLottie

At the risk of sounding dim, will nurseries inside of primary schools/associated with primary schools be open? Or do they just mean private nurseries?
He didn't make this clear. I think it relates to private settings and childminders.

Nurseries attached to schools are able to follow the guidance for primary schools. My school nursery will remain closed apart from those full timers who are children of critical workers.

Closed
Hardbackwriter · 04/01/2021 20:44

This is from November but it does give a bit of an answer to why nurseries are seen as lower risk.

Will childminders and nurseries close?
Bonkerz · 04/01/2021 20:58

So I'm now co fused. First point in new guidance is nurseries and childminders stay open. (Remember he closed us in March)
Second point is open to vulnerable and key workers.

If we were allowed to open to all then this second point didn't need to be made so I'm assuming we close unless key or vulnerable.

Are you a school based nursery?
Tillsforthrills · 04/01/2021 21:08

It would be a good idea to give early years workers, childminders, the vaccine along with teachers.

BertNErnie · 04/01/2021 21:08

That is indeed confusing

Tillsforthrills · 04/01/2021 21:09

@Bonkerz Boris said Early Years is open to all.

EasterIssland · 04/01/2021 21:09

@Tillsforthrills

It would be a good idea to give early years workers, childminders, the vaccine along with teachers.
Why? Vaccine doesn’t avoid transmission but getting so ill that would need a bed in icu. Hence why should a 25yo healthy white female have it before a 66yo with health problems. ?
Bonkerz · 04/01/2021 21:14

Boris also said schools are safe. Unfortunately it's not what's written in the updates published guidance which is what we have to go by for buisness purposes

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 04/01/2021 21:16

@Bonkerz I read them as separate points in a list of possible childcare options. Boris was quite clear that parents can continue to access early years settings so they can work and, separately children of key workers can continue to access childcare/education.

Hardbackwriter · 04/01/2021 21:22

Isn't that talking about use of childcare for children who aren't early years - so wraparound of various sorts of school age children?
