I know nobody will know for sure until Boris speaketh, but anyone have any intel on whether nurseries and childminders will stay open?

(I've searched existing threads and didn't see anything)

Thank fuck! Nearly lost my business and house in a machinery fire last year trying to work from home with a 2 year old

Flev · 04/01/2021 20:05

Oh thank God. No idea how long it'll last, but it's good news for today.

arthurdaly · 04/01/2021 20:05

Thank you Boris!!!! I mean it's all still shit but at least a few of us won't have a mental breakdown

Tillsforthrills · 04/01/2021 20:06

That’s great but I wonder how nursery workers feel, it seems strange to allow them to open and not primaries?

Happy though!

Plussizejumpsuit · 04/01/2021 20:07

But how does it make sense to close schools and not nurseries? In terms of risk.

Much smaller settings
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:08

seems strange to allow them to open and not primaries difference is the Number of pupils and therefore number of adults at pick up time- never more than 2 other adults when I pick up my 3yr old

Tiquismiquis · 04/01/2021 20:09

Thank fuck! I can do home school and work but not with the 1yo added in.

Backbee · 04/01/2021 20:09

Wahoo! So pleased.

SnottyLottie · 04/01/2021 20:10

At the risk of sounding dim, will nurseries inside of primary schools/associated with primary schools be open? Or do they just mean private nurseries?

sylbunny · 04/01/2021 20:11

Can someone tell me / link to the announcement- I'm stuck putting the toddler to bed

MangoM · 04/01/2021 20:11

Thank God for that!
However, some of the staff at our nursery have school age children so I'm not sure how it's all going to work with staff to child ratios if they're unable to come in. It feels like they may still be unable to offer everyone a place Confused

olderthanyouthink · 04/01/2021 20:12

@MangoM they should get key worker places I think

olderthanyouthink · 04/01/2021 20:13

Plussizejumpsuit · 04/01/2021 20:13

@rosie1959 OK yeah that makes sense for now and where I am in North East. But not sure as the new strain spreads. But we'll see.

I'd love to have confidence that it was based on cases linked to different settings etc but with the shambles of the gov I'm not sure much is actually thought out.

Waterdropsdown · 04/01/2021 20:14

@SnottyLottie
My London nursery as part of primary school is closed - was closed as part of tier 4 closures

FTMF30 · 04/01/2021 20:14

@sylbunny National lockdown until feb hald term (to supposedly allow for priority people to get vaccinated. All schools going to online learning. Nurseries open as usual. Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.

Yes really good point! Do they count as key workers though? In the same way teachers can send their children to school?
Looneytune253 · 04/01/2021 20:15

Lol @Backbee we're not allowed to charge either way whether we're forced to close or not

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 04/01/2021 20:16

I have mixed feelings. I feel quite strongly that sending my one year old to nursery is exposing us all to this (three positive cases in the last few weeks.) But I have to be able to work. In a way I was hoping they would close so the decision would be taken out of my hands (and I could negotiate leave/flexi hours.) But looks like I'll have to just take the risk and send him in. I think I would have cried either way!

MangoM · 04/01/2021 20:16

@olderthanyouthink
Thanks. Yes I didn't think of that.

I'm just sat here constantly refreshing my email now waiting for a message from nursery to confirm tomorrow!

Wherediditgo · 04/01/2021 20:16

Phew! I’m actually amazed!

Hardbackwriter · 04/01/2021 20:16

Nurseries have been linked to far fewer outbreaks. They reopened fully much earlier than schools and whereas the return of school pretty clearly led to rising cases you can't see the effect of nurseries opening on case rates at all. I can understand why those working in nurseries may not feel comfortable with this, and I have sympathy but there is evidence that they are lower-risk than schools.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Woohoo thank fuck for that
You read my mind
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2021 20:18
