Looking likely schools will close. When should they be allowed to open?

For those that believe they should close what would have to change for you to be happy with them opening? Is it a level of vaccinations if so what level? A lower daily hospital admission or death rate? Extra PPE? More Social distancing measures? Or is there a time limit on how long you think children should not be in school? Do you see any of these things changing in the near future?

Will just say that in my opinion they should stay open and I'm very concerned that they are closing.

I totally understand the calls to close the schools given the situation in our hospitals, and I understand teachers feeling at risk.

But people saying only when R

When the public has got behind school staff to demand that schools are genuinely made safer, and when funding has been put in place to facilitate measures to make them so.
@Billie18
You honestly think that?
The whole education system in the U.K. will collapse if primary schools close for 2 weeks?
Do you sleep ok?
So you are someone that wants schools closed now but will be happy for them to open in 2 weeks? So why do you want them closed at all?

This is a serious question. What do you think will be different in 2 weeks that will mean you are happy with them opening?

I suppose the argument would be who did that over the Christmas holidays

Billie18 · 03/01/2021 22:26

When the public has got behind school staff to demand that schools are genuinely made safer, and when funding has been put in place to facilitate measures to make them so.
What will make schools safer? What exactly do you want funding for that will make you happy for schools to open?

I don’t want schools to close @Billie18
I want them to be safe environments for both teachers and children.
That’s what I want.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 03/01/2021 22:31

Schools will shut until March and more people vaccinated.

Do I agree with this? I don’t. I think we should have vaccinated vulnerable teachers first.

But teachers - or some - seem unique in thinking they are too special to work through this like the rest of us. They have really done their profession a disservice

TasslesandFringes · 03/01/2021 22:31

Wish the govt would just vaccinate teachers.
Why the heck aren’t they doing this?!!

2fallsagain · 03/01/2021 22:33

@StatisticalSense

Schools should be closed until mid Feb with no keyworker provision and no remote learning, with the summer holidays cancelled and full attendance expected (and exams pushed back until July and August).
It's hard to know what is real and what is satire these days.
Eyewhisker · 03/01/2021 22:34

I hope only for January and that they get a mass rollout of the vaccine asap. No more ridiculous requirements for vaccinators and get all teachers vaccinated in the next week. We should be aiming for a million vaccinated per day. That’s 2,000 venues, each doing 500 people each day. Achievable if we have supplies.

The question was what will convince you that schools are safe to open? When you say you want them to be safe environments what criteria will you use to judge if they are?

@Saylethewayles

And I'll consider them safe to open when the numbers have dropped substantially and they are continuing to fall, when more people have been vaccinated, when we have enough data to ascertain how dangerous this new strain is and when the government extend their ridiculous 3 main symptoms list.
So that could realistically be no school for the rest of the academic year then if that's your criteria.

So you want teachers vaccinated before schools can open? All teachers or just those at the front of the queue? Will you then be happy for schools to open fully?

The same things we have been calling for for months, that the likes of you have vilified us for. Search for threads by Noblegiraffe if it's slipped your mind. And vaccines.

Had those demands been listened to we wouldn't be facing the same old shit now.

RickOShay · 03/01/2021 22:37

@Billie18
What do you think?

Allispretty · 03/01/2021 22:39

Op I'm with you I don't want them closed at all young people have suffered enough. What amazes me is that we have lived through various lockdowns now and each time we come out and the r number jumps (kicking a can down the road is all we are doing) so essentially almost all of mnet are asking for schools to close indefinitely as this is what will happen.

There is not a chance schools will close for 2 weeks only it will be weeks if not months.

I'm so surprised there are so many excellent homeschoolers on mnet as in RL everyone I spoke to went through hell trying to homeschool!

@ForeverInADay

When I can be guaranteed that if my children or my family need hospital treatment (for any reason), the hospital treatment to the right level of care will be available.
Not sure that is a pandemic problem or that could just be my local hospital

What things? What specific things do you want in place for you to be happy for schools to open? You say "and" vaccines so what else and by vaccines what number of vaccines and who would you like to be vaccinated?

Why do I need to search threads by someone else? Don't you know what you want to be happy to send your children to school?

I would be interested in this as well as you seem determined schools should stay open

What do you think would make schools safer *@Billie18*?
I think that schools should remain open. I don't think they should ever have closed. The unsafe option is having schools closed.

@Allispretty, is there no news coverage where you live?

For teachers, staff, children and their families and the wider community?
Are you a parent?
