To think that not everyone is scared

Of catching Covid....?

I'm sure I'll be flamed to within an inch of my life but never mind. And yes, this thread may have been done to death before but hey ho.

Having read countless threads today about schools closing/not closing and cases rocketing/going down, can I get a sense check of who is terrified about catching Covid (and why) and who is not?

For balance, I also read a thread the other day from a person who is clinically vulnerable and whose DH had just tested positive and she was terrified. Almost the entire thread was filled by other clinically vulnerable people who had had Covid and told her not to worry.

So, while we can all agree that yes, this is a novel virus and yes, people will die because that happens with any virus, is this the virus which we should all be terrified of?

I don't want it but I'm not terrified of it.

Life has to go on as much as possible, eg going to work.

I'm a bit more vulnerable than average but not very. If I sit thinking about dying alone gasping for breath... well yes I could terrify myself, but I choose not to do that, because there are many unpleasant ways to die.

If I was really vulnerable I would be very worried, shield as much as possible and expect those in contact with me not to act like dicks.

PhilCornwall1 · 03/01/2021 18:46

I'm CEV and not at all worried. My immune system is so shot that something as simple as a boil can make me extremely ill and did during the first lockdown.

If I get it, I get it, it's the luck of the draw and whatever the outcome, I'll just live with it, or not live.

Lovely1a2b3c · 03/01/2021 18:46

I'm not terrified of it but it has the potential to cause very severe illness so I am weary of it. I hate being unwell for 2 days, let alone the 2-weeks that most symptomatic people seem to be ill for, or worse still for months, with long covid. I have two conditions, which put me at slightly increased risk but I'm in my 30s so less likely to end up in intensive care.

I am scared for my parents who are over 60 with pre-existing conditions and desperately hoping that they can avoid catching it until they have had the vaccine.

notinthiseconomy · 03/01/2021 18:47

I'm honestly more worried about the state of the economy than I am about the virus.

loulouljh · 03/01/2021 18:47

Agreed. I am not afraid of catching it. I am not afraid of my kids catching it. At all. I am afraid though of the complete mess that we are now making of the economy, education, people's mental health etc. I genuinely think all sense of reason has been lost.

PinkiOcelot · 03/01/2021 18:48

I’m not scared of catching COVID. I am scared of what the future holds for the economy and education however. We can’t go on like this long term surely!

ReallySpicyCurry · 03/01/2021 18:48

I am not scared of it, however I would hate to pass it on to someone who is vulnerable, I worry for family members, and I am aware that it can be something of a lottery, with otherwise healthy people getting long covid. All in all I'd rather not have it and I am happy to take precautions to stop the spread. This to me seems logical.

What is not logical is the knee jerk, reactive panic I've seen amongst other healthy adults who are not in the vulnerable category. Ranting on FB about people not wearing masks (I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt and assume there is a good reason) getting cross and jittery about people getting too close in shops, making over dramatic statements, talking about how they are "not allowed" to do perfectly reasonable unrestricted things. These are healthy people in their 30s,40s and 50s. Yes they may take Covid badly, nobody knows until they get it, but they're absolutely ruled by fear in a way I find really surprising.

BlusteryLake · 03/01/2021 18:48

I have never been scared of catching it. I am even less worried now that my 86 year old MIL has had it and is fine. She caught it in hospital whilst in for something unrelated and was hardly ill with it at all. Not all old people keel over if they get covid.

Staffy1 · 03/01/2021 18:48

I am scared, have a few worrying health issues as do others in my family. It's quite evident from reading MN that a substantial amount of people aren't scared in the least.

doublehalo · 03/01/2021 18:49

Not scared, no.

I had it back in March as did lots of people I know, neighbours etc.

I don't know of anyone who has been hospitalised or died, nor does anyone I know ( I know this because I ask).

HOkieCOkie · 03/01/2021 18:50

I’m not scared of catching it, it’s bad flu. The media have a lot to answer for.

notanothertakeaway · 03/01/2021 18:50

I'm worried about catching the virus. I think it's unlikely i would die, but you never know. I'm more worried about long Covid

HOkieCOkie · 03/01/2021 18:51

@loulouljh I agree I’m scared of those things too.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 03/01/2021 18:52

@HermioneWeasley

I’m vulnerable (but not CEV) and while I’m not looking forward to having it, I am quite prepared to. It is not more important than children’s education or the destruction of the economy. My parents and PIL who are CEV are shielding and have not seen these grandchildren since March - we are making sensible decisions as a family to keep them safe.
Thank you. I agree.

I lost my mum to Covid on 17th December, she caught it in hospital, her whole ward ended up testing positive & then about day 10 she started going downhill. I sat at her beside in complete ppe for 2wks till she passed & it was horrific at times. I saw nursing staff go down with & even they were struggling. There were staff on the ward that had, had it & it took it out them to even change a bed. It’s a horrific sight to be seen when it’s got a hold 😥

MarshaBradyo · 03/01/2021 18:53

I’m not sure why when everyone in phase 1 is vaccinated I wouldn’t get it?

I’m not sure that we’re not mostly going to get it once this happens so I’m kind of bracing myself mentally.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 03/01/2021 18:53

YANBU. I'm not scared and I'm a teacher

Wardrobes123 · 03/01/2021 18:53

This

This is always what I was frightened of. And it happened.

I’m glad the healthy bone scared posters are revelling in their brave, healthy bodies. The CEV can just die then I guess.

I was never scared for me. But I’ve been so ill. And we’ve been beyond careful - I haven’t seen people for months on end.

I only hope you don’t have to go through the living hell I’m currently experiencing.

Grenlei · 03/01/2021 18:53

I'm not scared of it, as my dad used to say when your time is up, it's up. No point worrying about it.

My DS had it recently, the rest of us may also have had it or just a cold (one of us tested negative though despite symptoms so who knows?).

I'm more scared of living under these restrictions for years, not being able to go on holiday or to the shops, the long term effects on the economy and people's mental health.

MrSanders · 03/01/2021 18:53

I'm not scared, but then I'm not vulnerable or old and i dont know anyone who is.
But I do have a speech delayed child who needs to be in nursery, and our entire income comes from the Hospitality industry. So out of all the things I'm worried about catching Covid isnt one of them.

SamanthaJayne4 · 03/01/2021 18:54

I wasn't scared except of passing it on to a vulnerable person. Then I got it, trust me it was scary! I wasn't ill enough to go to hospital but I was very anxious until I beat it and began to get back to normal. I have no long term affects so feel very lucky.

MarshaBradyo · 03/01/2021 18:54

And related to that I’m far more concerned about impact on society atm from education to economy- although I think there will be a rebound

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 03/01/2021 18:54

@Figgygal

I’m not scared of getting it don’t think it will kill me (30’s no underlying health issues) BUT I do appreciate the spectrum of symptoms and how inconsistent it is in how people are affected and I just don’t bloody want it or for my kids to get it. Dh is 45 and overweight he’d be a concern so don’t want him getting it either
Yes, I agree with this. While I'm not scared of getting it, I completely agree that it is unpredictable

Charlie63849 · 03/01/2021 18:55

Not worried about it at all.

silverfonze · 03/01/2021 18:56

I'm not scared at all. Know lots who have had it (under age 55). Like around 30 people inc kids. Nobody been very ill.

People almost apologising for lack of drama ! Eg had a headache .. err that was it ..: just a lot of drama for healthy people under 55 I think and no real risk
