Just that really. With the opposition leader calling for a national lockdown within 24 hours, cases rising, parents and school staff not knowing what's happening, people crossing tiers for legitimate activities like work in non essential retail etc. It's just not going well is it?

If BJ and his lot want to recoup ANY legitimacy and governance they need to pull their fingers out. Bloody hell, at least do a presser and tell us what they're thinking/planning.

The lack of communication is I think what irks most of us. Constantly up in the air.

Tell us you bastards 😠

Tomorrow?
@Spiratedaway but BoJo has frequently ignored scientific advice - he was told to lock down way before March last year.
He was and he was wrong but as I said no one has had to deal with this everyone has an opinion maybe we need to look and blame others who lied when this started and let everyone fly all over

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2021 19:03

But he's still compounding the problem by consistently ignoring advice and bumbling his way through it. He doesn't inspire any confidence at all

nosswith · 03/01/2021 19:05

My guess is Wednesday. Two reasons, following Scotland's lead as their Parliament is being recalled, and why Wednesday is that the House of Commons resumes Thursday and the Prime Minister will want something in place without having to have a parliamentary debate first. given the views of some of his backbenchers.

Why do people want school closures. I'm sending both of mine in on keyworker cards if ours close. We are both keyworkers and I cannot home school and work full time from home!!

Surely you do actually understand why many people want schools to close?

There is a virus, the virus spreads in schools, some people get really sick...

didireallysaythat · 03/01/2021 19:09

The government's facebook page tells us to act like we've got it.

www.facebook.com/pg/UKgovernment/posts/

If your kid has it, would you send them into school? I don't think...

And as for testing a secondary school being a silver bullet, not really. The kid who tests positive probably does has it, and will be sent home. But the kid who sits next to him will stay at school, in English he might/should be tested but the LFT has a 50% false negative rate so it might take a couple of tests before he has a positive test. Meanwhile he's sat next to someone else in History and hey presto...

The LFT will stop schools sending entire classes (or bubbles) home (and the government doesn't like low attendance rates as it's hard to pretend that all Yr11 are getting the same level of education and that the GCSEs will be a level playing field when so many kids are out of the classroom) - and yes a lot of kids who didn't have it had to school at home for 10 days (the better PCR test would had been useful here if only we had the screening capacity/money for this), but there will be a few kids who are COVID positive who won't be self isolating....

Is this consistent with wanting to control the virus? I think not...

@Spiratedaway Ffs ...... no one has had to deal with a pandemic before ... everyone blaming Johnson but he is doing what the scientists advise and to keep the economy going I would hate to be in that position!! Ok for everyone else and starmer to give opinions when not having to deal with yes he has made mistakes but sure as hell starmer would have done !!!

FFS Johnson appeared on TV this morning with the message ‘schools are safe’ despite all London primary schools in Tier 4 being closed for 2 weeks and delay to secondary onsite learning due to (sensibly) implementing testing.

Boris did not say we will test staff in primary schools.
Boris did not say we will allow rotas for primary so smaller groups can be taught with social distancing
Boris did not say masks could be worn in primary school
Boris did not present any information to support his statement that schools are safe. All other actions suggest otherwise - all country being placed into higher Tiers, Christmas bubbles cancelled and a growing 50,000+ new cases a day

Consequently the staff at the Tier4 primary school my DC attend were not reassured & I got an email this evening to say the school is closed until 18th and I am back to the awful scenario of wfh and homeschooling.
He’s an absolutely fucking useless lump of lard.

@bartymao

*I am so sad for your mum.

What hobbies does she have? I had a random idea that we could be penpals.*

It's a lovely idea but she wouldn't be able to, her eyesight isn't good enough. She can barely read a book or do jigsaws any more.

That's a shame. Thank you for being so gracious and not laughing at me. Tell her a stranger is thinking of her anyway Flowers.

Because cases are sky high, there is a virulent new strain doing the rounds, hospitals are overloaded and I don't want to get it and don't want DS to get it?

And yes, I will have to home school too.

I don't. But i also know its inevitable in the coming weeks regardless. I'd rather bite the bullet and get on with it now tbh.

I get trying to reduce pressure on hospitals but you and your ds will probably get it if you are not on the first few.vaccine spots..I can't see anyone under 50 having the vaccine before the end of 2021 so it's just a matter of time when you get it.
blazinglightonthehill · 03/01/2021 19:36

Our primary school isn't opening along with lots of others in the area. Found out around 5pm.

Tier 4 northwest

Peston thinks so. He is usually bang on. I hope he’s right about the exams too.

im north and don't know a single person working from home inc ofice workers

Me too. My office is on a business park and every single building is fully occupied. Nobody is working from home. Some did during the March lockdown but my office had me go in every day and I know lots of others did too.

getwhatyougive · 03/01/2021 19:43

@CountessFrog @tealady the thing is it SO dramatic on MN for this kind of language. It goes hand in hand with speechless, shaking and sobbing. Usually because someone wasn’t exactly 2m away from someone reaching over for the carrots in Tesco Hmm.

IloveJKRowling · 03/01/2021 19:57

There's a big difference between catching covid when there's a doctor to treat you if you get really ill (and a CPAP machine if you need it, that you don't have to share) and catching it when all of this is not available.

We're in the latter scenario. Watch the front line doctors at the last Indie Sage meeting.

CountessFrog · 03/01/2021 20:07

You’re right, get what you give.

He is not doing what they advise. That is why things have become so serious.

notevenat20 · 03/01/2021 20:19

To be fair. Things are really serious because of the pandemic and now the new variant of the pandemic virus. Johnson is just really annoying but he didn't cause any of this and France and Spain are also a disaster.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2021 20:25

I don't want schools to close, I really don't. But I think it's inevitable and if I'd been warned before Christmas I'd have had a damn sight longer to get childcare organised than I do if closure is imminent. I also have a fuckwit ex who refused to discuss any sort of contingency plan in the preceding weeks.
