To think an announcement must be imminent

Just that really. With the opposition leader calling for a national lockdown within 24 hours, cases rising, parents and school staff not knowing what's happening, people crossing tiers for legitimate activities like work in non essential retail etc. It's just not going well is it?

If BJ and his lot want to recoup ANY legitimacy and governance they need to pull their fingers out. Bloody hell, at least do a presser and tell us what they're thinking/planning.

The lack of communication is I think what irks most of us. Constantly up in the air.

Tell us you bastards 😠

@Indecisive12

I really don’t think there should be a national closure of schools no. My area has the lowest rate it’s had since July! Why should our schools shut now?
So you keep that low rate?
Sickofthiscrapp · 03/01/2021 17:29

I’m very disappointed.
I was hoping for schools closures but I don’t think it will happen now especially Bojo was waffling in the morning about schools safety.
I hate this mad situation so much!

Silkiechickscat · 03/01/2021 17:29

Yes I suspect an announcement must be imminent with either Tier 5 or a national lockdown and we are just frantically trying to get house sale through before then. We are just assuming it could come any day and be from midnight.

Schools mine are secondary and SN no EHCP and y10 so know there's no school for them at least before 18th but no clear what's happening with testing / after then.

And hospitals here are over 100% capacity and rates rising still - we are Tier 4 but primaries open but will teachers stay off? It's chaos. I'm just glad can pre-warn my ASD child but then you get u-turns and very last minute announcements. I'm just having to not work and live off savings until things settle as have SN child who needs 1 to 1 if no school. Loads of people don't qualify for furlough or any help at all and the schools announcement was so late.

Sickofthiscrapp · 03/01/2021 17:30

I’m in tier 4 and my are has 600 cases on100k, we are just outside London.
So pretty high. Obviously not high enough for them.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/01/2021 17:30

Our Council in the north east (Tier 4) has just issued an alert an hour ago to say they will support any school/head who takes the decision to close.

Talk about passing the buck. Up to the individual schools now.

dramallam4 · 03/01/2021 17:30

@Allispretty

Or will wfh I should add, I can't understand why people are so desperate for an announcement! Something is obviously imminent until then why would t people rather just get on with their life's

Well, it is quite clear that if the government fails to close schools prior to schools closing of their own accord, whether that be teachers handing in a section 44 letter or that they have outbreaks there will be no provision for keyworker or vulnerable children. So obviously trying to keep that provision in place is quite important because if doctors and nurses have to look after their isolating children that could maybe pose a slight issue given that hospitals are short-staffed. If you are still wondering why people are waiting maybe ask yourself what a government are meant to do when their citizens are so clearly incapable of empathy and minimising their contact with others when it is so critical in a time like now.
notevenat20 · 03/01/2021 17:30

Did Starmer really ask for a national lockdown immediately?

userxx · 03/01/2021 17:32

@Allispretty Not the case at all, some businesses are booming so no chance of staff being furloughed. Horrible situation for many.

Orangeblossom77777 · 03/01/2021 17:32

It sounds like they will need to announce something tomorrow guess they are trying to work out the details.

notevenat20 · 03/01/2021 17:33

Apparently he did. I wonder what he means exactly. Tier 4 everywhere or something stricter still?

Pastanred · 03/01/2021 17:33

Its not only keyworkers who will be in work why is that being suggested?

even at height of lockdown any worker could go in as long as their business was covid secure. That's why so many closed. But many opened a month later. If we ad a march style lockdown it would be all current workers working as it never was just key workers allowed

movingonup20 · 03/01/2021 17:34

Tiers could work but only if they stop people travelling freely! On the night London went into tier 3 people arrived, late at night ... they own second homes here, or came to stay with relatives. 1/3 of the properties in my development are second homes. 2 weeks on our rate has tripled, coincidence???

Temporary down needs to be accompanied with do not travel enforcement with some system of getting permission if required (can be generous with the circumstances, not everyone has a simple straightforward life but no travel for leisure). Then each region/county can be reduced once their rates improve without the risk of those outside taking advantage of the reduced restrictions. I think it needs to be regional because some of us cross county boundaries just to go shopping, with a flexible approach where needed eg where you live on a boundary. Anpr cameras can be used, if people are going to be fined they will comply (usually). Would prefer a month of staying at home to 3 months + of on off restrictions. And they can vaccinate many millions in that time too

Sertchgi123 · 03/01/2021 17:34

So many areas are already in Tier 4. I can't see what difference a lockdown is to Tier 4, apart from the schools closing.

Pastanred · 03/01/2021 17:35

what i mean is no businesses would close as they're technically covid secure so office staff in the office now could still be made to go in if their employers want them

Could go in is not the same as should go in. Nobody should go in if their work can be done at home.
movingonup20 · 03/01/2021 17:35

@Decembersnowfall

I've said this elsewhere but those in manufacturing who must be on site need to be treated as key workers - it is critical to keep industry running

SilverBirchWithout · 03/01/2021 17:36

I think they’ll wait to see how many schools actually open in next couple of days, and how many parents keep their children off.
This abysmal Govt likes to play to popular opinion and has been behind the curve every bloody time, they need to lead from the front.
Everyday we delay closing schools means any lockdown will need to go on for even longer. More people will become seriously ill or die and the economy will suffer for longer.
If we could safely go out - people would be protesting on the street. I’m so angry, my DS works in an ITU - it’s desperately sad.

movingonup20 · 03/01/2021 17:37

@Silkiechickscat

We moved during the last lockdown, wasn't a problem because it was allowed (even in March) estate agent was wfh but excellent, solicitors office was manned for post but most wfh

cardibach · 03/01/2021 17:37
@Allispretty

Not everyone is furloughed if they’re not a key worker. There’s a single parent on another thread who works in furniture manufacturing, not a key worker and their workplace has never been busier so absolutely no furlough on offer. They are totally stuffed for childcare options with their kids school closes.
There is a right to furlough for childcare purposes.

Pastanred · 03/01/2021 17:37

most people who worked from home last time will be forced in tho as employers can stay open regardless

They only closed last time because places needed time to put rules/policies in place

i was off 4 months last time in march but was in during the november lockdown as normal

SunFlowerRose · 03/01/2021 17:39

In March I worked from home for months.

Yet now in tier 4 our employer has decided that no one is to work from home no matter the circumstances because Boris says you can go into work if you cannot work from home, providing a loop hole for employers that decide to not give you the choice.

I only go out for food shopping and to work. Annoyingly if I catch covid it would more than likely be from someone I work with.

Pastanred · 03/01/2021 17:41

sun

i'm same - tier 4 but told we will not close - many didnt close in the last november lockdown

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 17:41

Their employers are in the wrong then. The guidance is that everyone should be working from home if they can, regardless of whether or not their workplace is "covid secure". I am in London and no office worker I know has been in since March.

S0CKS · 03/01/2021 17:41

Give it a week he can't do what Kia says even if it was also his thoughts for a few days can't be seen as following labour.

Beebityboo · 03/01/2021 17:42

Do you think they will do blanket school closures, or go by tier?
