Why is Eton trending on twitter

Why is Eton trending for not re-opening next week: isn’t that because it’s in Tier 4? Rules apply to all schools in Tier 4, whether state or private?

OP posts:
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/01/2021 12:28

The rules for school reopening are not consistent across all of Tier 4.

herecomesthsun · 03/01/2021 12:29

private schools open later anyhow

Curioushorse · 03/01/2021 12:29

I live nearby. Rumour has it......

.....that Eton is responsible for the high coronavirus stats that Slough had last term. Apparently one of the boarding houses got infected and a load of the boys then got it.

I guess when one of the boarding houses gets it, then all the kids in that house will get it. I suspect boarding schools are a whole interesting can of worms to manage. Plus, I think Eton kids come from all over the world, don’t they? So how do they manage quarantine in a boarding house?

Dahlietta · 03/01/2021 12:30

It wouldn’t be opening this week even if it were within its term. It’s a secondary school. There’s some dim people on Twitter.

Wankerchief · 03/01/2021 12:30

If you actually read through the # rather than come here for it to be explained you would see its because Eton can close but state schools cant.
Not all tier 4. Schools are closed because Boris says no close for the poor

We're in Tier 4. Our primary schools are due to open tomorrow.

What a load of bollocks. This class war, the government hates the poor etc rhetoric helps no one. Eton is secondary so wouldn't open anyway. More to the point, independent schools are free to decide.
DoMyBest · 03/01/2021 12:32

Ah. Ok then I should have said schools in government ‘high risk’ tier 4 areas all have to shut, whether state or private. Same rules for all. Westminster, Harrow, etc don’t have a choice (heads of independent schools recently clarified this with the government) they are obliged to shut - whether they have weekly testing etc or not. But the messages trending in Twitter is that state schools are being forced to stay open whilst private schools are allowed to shut. Not sure where that’s coming from.

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 03/01/2021 12:37

The rules for secondary schools in England are the same where ever you are, whatever Tier.

Remote learning for exam years next week; for all from the week after (though schools can offer remote learning for all years next week if they have the resources). On site only for children of critical workers/vulnerable children for those weeks, whilst schools arrange testing.

This includes independent schools.

Boarding schools are also being required to stagger pupils return, with the allowance for the fact some pupils may have already returned, in which case they should be provided with remote learning.

Purpletomato · 03/01/2021 12:37

Surely it's shut next week because it's a secondary school and English secondary schools aren't allowed to return til the 11th for yrs 11 and 13 and the 18th for the other year's. Some private schools would like to open earlier but they can't, same as state schools.

Wankerchief · 03/01/2021 12:38

Also Eton has a £35k test machine.
So their kids are fine

Boris wont feed kids lunch but he likes the poor? Ok fair enough

MuseumGardens · 03/01/2021 12:39

Eton is a secondary school so it's not relevant whether primary state schools are allowed to open

orangeicecream · 03/01/2021 12:40

I know of an independent senior school on South Coast... Boarders are back tonight, starting lessons tomorrow... All year groups. This is because they have already sent testing kits to all pupils and staff and their testing system is ready to go.

It depends on what the gov have shut schools for..... To stop spread or to give schools time to sort testing.

pinbinpin · 03/01/2021 12:41

Independent schools can do what they like, but tend to follow suite with DOH guidelines (can you imagine the grief private school kids would get?) Therefore it is entirely expected that Eton, along.with all other independent secondaries, will be returning on 11th/18th, instead of next week, like all.England secondaries.

Is Windsor in Slough?

HibernatingTill2030 · 03/01/2021 12:42

Are independent schools not allowed to decide? I thought the delayed opening was only for state schools.

pinbinpin · 03/01/2021 12:42

DOE I mean

pinbinpin · 03/01/2021 12:43

All the independent secondaries round here where I know both kids and teachers (seven at rough count) are following the 11th/18th guidelines - of course they are, why wouldn't they?

pinbinpin · 03/01/2021 12:50

the whole school messaging has been an absolute shitshow. I don't find it confusing - as stands: primaries can open next week as normal / primaries in special consideration areas can't until we say / secondaries exam.years delayed til the 11th / secondaries all other years delayed til the 18th. But Twitter and my local FB page are full of dimwits going "fuck the government, I'm not sending my kids back next week" and people have to ppint out we, you're in Croydon so they're not open anyway or we, you're kids are 13 and 15 so at secondary etc etc.

I know the government have been a shitshow on messaging generally, but Gav's broadcast was clear-ish, and it's all on the gov.uk website (which nobody ever seems to look at) and the schools are sending out emails.

Seeline · 03/01/2021 12:51

Independents usually follow govt advice otherwise their insurance doesn't cover them.

My DDs independent secondary in tier 4 London is going 'back' as per original term dates on Wednesday this week. However all students will be on line with only Y11 and 13 going on site from next Monday and the rest joining them on the 18th (at the moment....).

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/01/2021 12:55

It’s trending because hardcore lefties have spotted a new way to attack the ‘system’ and the upper classes. Watch as this starts to spiral, it won’t end with Eton it’s just the start. Trying to push the clear disparity between the classes to suit their agenda under the cover of the pandemic.

It’s mostly smoke and mirrors and subverting the truth but those who see Eton and a possible class difference will jump on the bandwagon and hey presto, more bollocks.

Also I’m seeing a lot of chatter about news coming out soon that may change things drastically, perhaps this is a distraction.

ShaunaTheSheep · 03/01/2021 13:02

Is Windsor in Slough?

No, Windsor & Maidenhead

RedskyAtnight · 03/01/2021 13:03

Doesn't look like Eton term starts until the 12th anyway ... so they were never planning to open next week.

KirstenBlest · 03/01/2021 13:09

Eton is between Windsor and Slough, but in Windsor & Maidenhead Borough Council, not Slough BC. Windsor is about 2 miles from Slough.

Thatwentbadly · 03/01/2021 13:19

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

The rules for school reopening are not consistent across all of Tier 4.
3/4 of the country are in tier 4 but only a small minority of schools in tier 4 ‘hot spots’ are closed.
RaffertyBear · 03/01/2021 13:20

Eton's had a few news worth issues lately - twitter uses an algorithm so it's probably based on the fact that've just had two major pieces of news, and now this.
