Why is Eton trending on twitter

Why is Eton trending for not re-opening next week: isn’t that because it’s in Tier 4? Rules apply to all schools in Tier 4, whether state or private?

Surely the issue is that schools like Eton are very good at on-line delivery of education. So if they are closed their pupils miss less.

I assume their decision will be based on Government advice plus a risk assessment, which will include the fact that many overseas students will have stayed in the UK with guardians etc, and so need somewhere to go, and an equal number might be stuck and unable to return to the UK because so many flights are cancelled. .

It is relatively harder for state schools to deliver on-line education, in part because of lack of equipment and pupil supervision, , but also because of union concerns about child protection. The Government is concerned about state children falling behind in the education and the fear that they may never catch up.

There is not reason why pupils in a boarding school might cause a virus to spread more widely amongst vulnerable people in the community than day pupils commuting to and from school and perhaps living in a multi generational household. I doubt that the Government has given Eton much thought. Their concern will be state pupils and getting that balance right between risk and the mental and educational toll that school closures would bring.

Eton will not be opening next week (if indeed it was going to open then anyway, more likely the week after); quite right too. It closed earlier in December because they had a few Covid cases.

I thought no schools were opening, started off as only primaries being closed and then extended to secondaries.

Anyway who cares. It seems jolly sensible to me, would be irresponsible to open in my opinion.

NeedingCoffee · 03/01/2021 13:45

Term was always due to start on the 12th - date was set over a year ago before covid was so much as a twinkle in the eye.

Dahlietta · 03/01/2021 13:52

I thought no schools were opening, started off as only primaries being closed and then extended to secondaries.

No, started with delayed start for secondaries and a smallish number of primaries closed. Still the same.

Wsdhgujn · 03/01/2021 13:53

But all secondary schools are closed next week how is Erin different the argument is about primary schools

justasking111 · 03/01/2021 14:09

Years ago our local private school a student returning brought back from Nigeria a really nasty bug, it swept through school, staff, nursing staff and students, dorms became sans. public health became involved it was in lockdown for a time.

I guess universities are the same. DS not allowed back until 28th because so many overseas students arriving from abroad so they are isolating them, banning others from returning. These overseas students start their courses in January.

Iforangeswerenttheonlyfruit · 03/01/2021 14:09

As a PP said, all secondaries, both state and independent are effectively ‘closed’ next week, with remote learning for exam years. They only go in for GCSE and BTEC exams (not mocks). The following week exam years go in, the other years do remote learning.

The recent change for secondaries only affects the exam years, my Ds was due in tomorrow, obviously now changed to 11th. The policy change probably came too late for boarders, especially international, who would have had flights booked. They are also doing remote learning from the boarding houses at our school.

@AlexaShutUp

Rules apply to all schools in Tier 4, whether state or private?

We're in Tier 4. Our primary schools are due to open tomorrow.

Tiers are irrelevant to schools opening or not. None of the guidance on Tiers includes anything about schools.
DdraigGoch · 03/01/2021 14:22

@pinbinpin

Independent schools can do what they like, but tend to follow suite with DOH guidelines (can you imagine the grief private school kids would get?) Therefore it is entirely expected that Eton, along.with all other independent secondaries, will be returning on 11th/18th, instead of next week, like all.England secondaries.

Is Windsor in Slough?

No, it's not. Eton is in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead which is a completely separate unitary authority to Slough.
CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:23

This is more anti eton bullshit. No secondary schools round here are opening to all students until 18th, whether state or private.
I work at a private day school but 2 of my local friends work at private boarding schools and we are all back on 18th, with exam students back on 11th. Same as the local state schools.

CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:24

We are Berkshire too and all the schools I know of are doing the same.
I’d be happy to be corrected if you can tell me a Berkshire secondary school back before 18th (except yr11 and 13).

CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:26

@pinbinpin which secondary schools are back this week? None round here are (state or private) and I’m less than half an hour from eton.

CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:27

All primaries round here are back this Monday or Tuesday. Eton is not comparable as it’s from yr9-13 only.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2021 14:28

BoJo and Rees-Mogg are Old Etonians.

CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:28

A number of boarding schools closed early due to students flying home.
My private day school didn’t finish any earlier and is going back in 18th, as per government guidelines.
Staff are teaching a full online timetable from 6th

CanICelebrate · 03/01/2021 14:29

@MerryChristmasToYou
Well done yes they are!
How is that relevant? Eton appear to be back on 18th, same as ALL other local secondary schools that I’m aware of, including mine and my dc’s.

Pyewhacket · 03/01/2021 14:31

@Curioushorse

I live nearby. Rumour has it......

.....that Eton is responsible for the high coronavirus stats that Slough had last term. Apparently one of the boarding houses got infected and a load of the boys then got it.

I guess when one of the boarding houses gets it, then all the kids in that house will get it. I suspect boarding schools are a whole interesting can of worms to manage. Plus, I think Eton kids come from all over the world, don’t they? So how do they manage quarantine in a boarding house?

Then you’re listening to utter bollocks coz Eton isn’t in Slough, it’s in Windsor , and that comes under Windsor and Maidenhead. Also they sent an entire year home when a few kids testing positive. They’ve also done an awful lot for the community during lock down like open their canteen facilities and offer full accommodation to over 100 NHS staff.
MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2021 14:39

@CanICelebrate, a previous poster said I doubt that the Government has given Eton much thought.

I have nothing against Eton College.

happydappy2 · 03/01/2021 14:49

Funny how the press rarely pick up on the positive aspects of Eton contributing to society....in the original lockdown they opened their dorms to Drs & nurses, and put fresh flowers in the rooms-had gin & tonics flowing for medical staff after a hard shift.

The reason they have so many + cases might be because they use a private company to do testing, which will throw up some false positives...

It is not Etons fault if they can organise themselves to deliver effective online teaching to children, (all over the world) they are not responsible for the wealth & wellbeing of every child in the country....that would be our government.

I live fairly nearby and heard the same rumour.......

HelloDaisy · 03/01/2021 14:54

However my ds is at college in year 13 and will be online from tomorrow so it probably is due to us being in tier 4.

1dayatatime · 03/01/2021 14:58

I heard a rumour, I don't know if it's true, that Eton was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic as well...

Don't you just love how fake news stats.

BlueBaubles12 · 03/01/2021 15:01

@Wankerchief

If you actually read through the # rather than come here for it to be explained you would see its because Eton can close but state schools cant. Not all tier 4. Schools are closed because Boris says no close for the poor
I live in a Tier 4 area and trust me, the kids at my local state school are not poor.
user1471565182 · 03/01/2021 15:02

You really dont think that this government hates the poor? made up of the same people who said to Nick Clegg why would you want to build council houses it just creates Labour voters?'
