Well some can and do! The fact is that there is absolutely no data SO FAR proving thst teachers are being hit disproportionately by Covid.

Close the schools, don't close the schools, makes no difference to me personally, but don't make up facts.

There is data.... but the government won’t release it. Take a wild guess why that might be? That’s why the head teachers union have started legal action...to force them to release the data.

And because a lucky ‘few’ can (it must be a small number as out of about 30 teacher friends NONE are allowed to wear masks in the classroom) then that’s ok??? Would you like to spend 6 hours unmasked in a room of 30??

Without seeing data I am not jumping to wild conclusions. It's not being reported in any newspapers and there is no way reporters would turn that down if they could find it out.

Oh here we go, wade in. As well you know I was replying to inquietants claim that teachers had it worse than anyone. That's simply not true SO FAR.

But pointless continuing as the hysterics will be along in a minute.

The thing about schools that no one seems to be able to grasp is how being community hubs they are problematic.

They are places where large numbers are in close proximity to each other in the worst environment possible for transmission. They have hundreds of people linked to them.

We know that the worst places for transmission have been care homes and hospitals. And other institutions where adults are all in close contact for long periods. In those cases we have found ways of restricting access and using protection. Even supermarkets have been doing this to a degree.

Schools remain the only place where this isn't happening and its only been possible because of lower transmission between children.

That's no longer true and that causes a fundamental problem. Schools now pose a risk to the wider community which was not as true previously. And they pose a greater risk to those who attend them - though for children the risk is more of a mild nature.

There seems to be a fundamental inability to understand this.

The situation previously has changed.

Primary schools being kept open is less about education and more about economic productivity for their parents. Though the Conservative Party will never openly admit this.

Hairdressers are closed around here - tier 4, higher covid rates than some London boroughs. Supermarkets are comparatively large, airy spaces and they are allowed to and do stop people coming in if they think they are getting too busy. Primary schools remain open to all children here - no children wearing masks, staff expected to administer first aid (obviously not from a 2m distance), stop fights (obviously not from a 2m distance), help cut up food (remember Ofsted is very concerned about this lack of ability...), deal with toiletting accidents, deal with the children who say they feel unwell or who are upset etc, etc. Anyone who really thinks primary school staff can keep 2m away from children while in loco parentis is a loon.

My primary child is in a class of 32 this year, 33 last year. Sixteen classes all have 30 plus pupils (this is a junior school). Teacher can't wear a mask and can't be 2m away. There have been teachers off with Covid and I was wondering the other day what the national stats are for teachers are given they have no PPE and social distancing can't happen. I think they are all doing a great job but with the more transmissible strain of Covid they may well be at more risk.

It took my friend, late 40s, 8 to 10 weeks to fully get over Covid. We can't have many teachers off for that long before schools have to close due to shortage of staff.
