Exactly, @Thunderpunt. The sense of entitlement (and the dislike for children) of some teachers on here is staggering.

Benjispruce2 · 02/01/2021 15:13

Bravo!

rossogingerale · 02/01/2021 15:13

I support this 100%. I am in tier 4 area up north, every tier should be treated the same and no one should be asked to work in unsafe conditions.

This fucking government are shite and so inconsistent.

Dislike children? Do you have any examples of this. Confused

LaBStar

So you'd be OK with the doctor treating your cancer, the architect designing your house, and the pilot flying your plane, not being educated beyond basic literacy and a bit of spiritual enlightenment?

Even in houses with abundant books, I can't quite see that working. And you are mistaken in thinking that all children have good access to books outside school.

KeysDontBelongInTheFridge · 02/01/2021 15:14

I wonder when we’ll find out?

borntohula · 02/01/2021 15:15

How come no one ever gave a shit about the possibility of teachers or children becoming ill and dying from norovirus or flu?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/01/2021 15:15

the teachers get furloughed

I would fucking love that. I would snap someone's hand off if they offered me furlough.

KeysDontBelongInTheFridge · 02/01/2021 15:16

I’m getting increasingly annoyed that there’s been no governmental response to this, everything’s just gone quiet.

ktp100 · 02/01/2021 15:16

It's literally their job to put teachers first.

I think we're all well aware that the government are currently putting primary staff LAST by sending them in while things are this bad without masks!

It's really unsurprising that their unions would be up in arms - they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't!!

Tyranttoddler · 02/01/2021 15:16

@LaBStar

Am I allowed to say this?

As a parent, I've met some wonderful secondary school teachers, really inspiring and committed people. But as a "profession" I also think they should get over themselves a bit.

With the arrival of books available to all, once you learn to read and write, unless you're on the path to be doing a Physics PhD, the only real education that is valuable IMO is the personal and spiritual.

Am I allowed to say this?

Erm... Ok 👍

Primary kids are routinely vaccinated against the flu, and at my school they paid for teachers to have the vaccine as well.
Blackdog19 · 02/01/2021 15:17

I know other professions have had to get on with it, but to be fair, primary school kids have rubbish hygiene and can’t social distance. I wfh and life will be easier with my dc at school but if the situations at hospitals are so bad I think schools need to shut to prevent more mixing.

Chocolatte21 · 02/01/2021 15:17

If teachers want schools closed then they should also have to work from home whilst caring for their children. It’s simply not fair that teachers get to send their children to school while they WFH under key worker provision whilst parents are forced to WFH AND care/home school their children, and without the job security that teachers have.

SchrodingersUnicorn · 02/01/2021 15:18

Oooh I'm up for furlough too. CV NEU member. I will be refusing to go to my unsafe classroom but i will continue to teach live lessons online, plus pre-recording the same lessons for pupils who are sharing tech with siblings.
I'll also mark all their work, rather than assessing some pieces verbally or by discussion as I usually would, so marking 600 pieces of work a week rather than my usual 300. It will be double the work for me, plus homeschooling my own child (who will not be going in, because I am not). So 3 jobs.
But you know what? That will keep me alive, closing schools will enable community transmission to drop or at least not increase even more and will save lives. My local NHS friends are on their knees and in tears that schools are going back when our hospitals are already over capacity.
But if furlough is an option, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Only then my GCSE and A level pupils wouldn't get taught.

Thunderpunt · 02/01/2021 15:18

@Monkeytennis97 Gaslit? Hmm As my teen would say.... alright Karen

Soontobe60 · 02/01/2021 15:18

@PinkFondantFancy

Ok fine, but they'll have to not open for children of teachers under key worker provision either - it's either safe or it's not
The whole point is that its not safe in the current circumstances. A class full of 30 children and 2/3 adults is not the same as one with 6 children. Social distancing is impossible, which is where the risk lies.
Blackdog19 · 02/01/2021 15:18

And I say that with our primary school having provided the absolute bare minimum during lockdown 1. The secondary were very good.

SaltyAF · 02/01/2021 15:18

How does that work when the parent is working from home, on the computer. How do two or three children aged 5-11 not miss out? I'm not talking about pupils who are so deprived that they would qualify for free ipads or whatever. I'm talking about the so-called 'squeezed middle' who qualify for nothing, but can't afford anything either.

I'm not well off at all. I don't have loaded parents and my DH earns less than me. However I considered it my duty as a parent to provide my DCs with relatively inexpensive laptops so they can access schoolwork when unable to be there. Many children have very expensive consoles and / or their parents drive pretty new cars, so it's surprising how many families consider basic technology so far out of reach.

thetoughhaveleft · 02/01/2021 15:19

I am a teacher (secondary) and absolutely do not want my children to go in. Working from home and juggling their education and childcare is by far better than sending them in to mix with others in an unsafe environment. I think you'll find most teachers would agree.

ArabellaScott · 02/01/2021 15:19

@noblegiraffe

It's not a strike.

It's a section 44 walkout.

Employees have the legal right to a safe workplace and the government is breaking that law.

Good for them, and the teachers have my every support.

It's mad to think it's okay to send them back in at the moment. (I'm in Scotland; schools are off til the 18th, at least by then we might have a clearer picture of the new variant and potential impacts).

Beebityboo · 02/01/2021 15:20

So what do you think happens now? Can the government really just ignore all of this and plough ahead?

Panickingpavlova · 02/01/2021 15:20

Born we get offered a flu jab every year for free Confused

And I get dc done either via school or privately. As far as know there is no help for norivus.

I did this last time. 🤷‍♀️
