Nor do you about schools, bagamoyo, nor do you.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 13:46

@Bagamoyo1 probably about as much of an idea as you have about the realities of how safe schools have been during the pandemic... perhaps we should both stick to our own areas of expertise eh? Grin

Not going to happen. It's pie in the sky.

sazzy5 · 02/01/2021 13:48

Our secondary school has said remote teaching first week. Second week exam years in. Then everyone back the following week. Mass testing for the exam years starts this Monday, another test later in the week. All timetabled and sorted.
It is difficult but not impossible. I think the teachers want schools open, my teacher friends do. If the above can be done, I think it is much safer for all.

ItsGrimInHull · 02/01/2021 13:48

My teacher DC is delivering a full timetable online to all year groups from 7 to 13 from Monday, not just worksheets
When covid rates in Hull reached 800 per 100K in October the local education authority begged the DofE to be allowed to introduce some flexible attendance but it was refused. Much of London is (thankfully) still below that level.
Let's hope the headteachers have more luck in improving safety.

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2021 13:49

It's so odd how people's attitudes have changed.

At the beginning everyone was terrified to the point of serious concern for MH. People thought they'd catch it from mail, climbing over styles, opening windows or going in their garden. Milk wasn't essential in some people's eyes.

I never went that far but the scenes in Lombardy made me realise why some had such fear.

People supported the PPE drive for public transport workers, police, nhs staff. There was outrage. Daily continuous news reports on care homes, the spread in case homes, lack of PPE, staff working 8n unsafe conditions.

I do not understand why the same isn't done for pupils and staff with regards schools.

Supermarkets limit numbers, masks and SD. GP surgeries and hospitals have much lower footfall and you need to jump 26 hurdles before you get in. Non essential shops are shut. You can't go to gym, swimming pool, exercise outside even in a group. No theatres and cinemas. No sitting in your family group in a restaurant even outside or in the pods many have designed.

The only apparently safe group household mixing for hours and hours is a school. Yet no one can give the science about why schools are different.

Noellodee · 02/01/2021 13:50

Where is Hull again?

(Just kidding, I live very local to it myself).

Hercwasonasnowball · 02/01/2021 13:50

@Bagamoyo1 Is the irony of your not a clue post lost on you?

I do know that if GPs were posting about their working conditions being like teachers, I'd be supportive.

I do know that I'm supportive of the NHS hospital staff who are posting and saying how bad things are. This is because I listen to, and believe, what they are saying.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 02/01/2021 13:50

Not going to happen. It's pie in the sky.

What makes you say that?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 02/01/2021 13:50

I back the headteachers, but why has it gotten to this?

Why can't there be the foresight to organise the schools testing and not the shambles it is at the moment.

Eton had the right idea - test everyone at the beginning at term and keep testing. Yes of course Eton has more financial resources, but I know of several schools where they have had to tell year groups to stay at home for budgetary reasons - staff have had to isolate and they cannot afford to have supply teachers.

KimNotEllen · 02/01/2021 13:51

@ItsGrimInHull

Our local rates are over 1k per 100,000 yet our primary schools have been deemed to be safe to open. It's madness

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 13:52

Step forward, Gavin Williamson.

I hope they make Williamson do a grovelling press conference. Really would be a great start to the new year.

Have you seen our government? Foresight does not exist.

Our school “plans” look a bit like this. I’ll be impressed if mass testing starts on Monday, though, as tests have yet to be delivered to all secondary schools “from 8am” on Monday morning. We are still trying to recruit volunteers to administer the testing.

You are presumably aware that the tests miss most positive cases? Good luck.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 13:58

@Beebityboo oooh wouldn't it just! Grin

I know he's like teflon, but surely his position as education secretary is becoming untenable?
mrjuno · 02/01/2021 14:04

I am completely opposed to this.

I was a teacher pre-DC, and if any school would like to remain open and employ me to crack on with the job, I'd be very glad to hear from them. I would appreciate the salary, too, as my job disappeared in March when lockdown was announced.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 14:07

Why haven't you applied for teaching jobs in the meantime then? Loads of them about.

Hercwasonasnowball · 02/01/2021 14:07

@mrjuno

Lots of schools are after teachers. There's a recruitment and retention crisis too. There are also plenty of roles involved in testing students. Look out on your local school websites.

You realize that Eton kids do not go on public transport, home to family every single day.... They do not mix with outside people necessarily. I don't know if teachers live on premises or not, but students do. Their level of risk is much lower than a sec school kid taking a bus, a train/tube, mixing with 150 other who do the same.
phlebasconsidered · 02/01/2021 14:07

@mrjuno why have you not applied already? Tons of vacancies - seriously! Schools would snap you up!

Wannabangbang · 02/01/2021 14:08

Brilliant news! Backing the teachers all the way! I hope the government takes notices and acts before Monday!

phlebasconsidered · 02/01/2021 14:08

@mrjuno what subject and sector?
