Actually as a GP I’ll be administering the vaccine

Its about time that you actually did something., I haven't been able to get a face 2 face appointment with my GP since March.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:06

@greentrianglequality street i agree with this too , people are going to these places because they can
A shop that has mostly homeware but couple aisle of food
All shops incl supermarkets should only be allowed to open their aisles of food for now
Yes you might have the odd person that needs a kettle but these can be accompanied by a member of staff to go and select
Otherwise schools will be off and half the kids will be wondering around tesco or b&m as soon as you get to stage of closing schools all non essential should close as well

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 15:07

Shops aren't safe but efforts have been made to make them safer

That's what schools want too.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:08

@FrippEnos thats pretty unfair gp's have been flat out and at the beginning were very exposed
Its not all about we are worse off than you , gp's have saves many lifes and will be instrumental in helping get any vaccines administeted

Flaxmeadow · 02/01/2021 15:08

The NEU's walkout is on the basis of section 44 - health and safety. Other industries could also organise walkouts on the same basis.

What an absolutely disgusting proposition

I've been in unions. I cut my teeth in them back in the 1980s. I came from a heavily unionised area in the north of England. Started work at 16 and straight into a closed shop militant union situation. Had family who were coal miners. Supported them to the hilt against Thatcher. Ive stood on picket lines and protested

But what you're saying here is an absolute fucking disgrace. We are in the worst crisis since WW2. Children are suffering, not just from lack of education but from abuse at home going unchecked, from no contact with their peers and you want this!!!! You want to make this crisis situation worse and worse for our most vulnerable

Shame on anyone who would strike now

ItsGrimInHull · 02/01/2021 15:08

@mrjuno

I am completely opposed to this.

I was a teacher pre-DC, and if any school would like to remain open and employ me to crack on with the job, I'd be very glad to hear from them. I would appreciate the salary, too, as my job disappeared in March when lockdown was announced.

There is a massive shortage of teachers. Just apply for one of the many vacancies.
noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 15:09

Shame on anyone who would strike now

It's not a strike.

RigaBalsam · 02/01/2021 15:09

Flax weren't you calling for a full National lockdown not so long ago. Apologies if I have mixed you up with someone else.

Are the only generalisations allowed the ones against teachers?

If not, you may want to try pulling up some of the other posters before you pull me up on it.

Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the hypocrisy.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:11

@noblegiraffe yes and supermarket staff have been affected as we have no data available to tell us what profession is at risk , bus drivers were badly affected at the beginning
But people are not happy with teacher bashing but there a few teachers doing the same
Why has it taken the unions until now to act ? This was all apparent at the end of term ?
But half people do want schools open as is that is clear on some threads so goverment will get moaned at either way

Flapjak · 02/01/2021 15:12

Bagamoyo1

Massively unreasonable of them. They just need to get on with educating children and stop trying to shut schools down. Ridiculous.
If other key services made such a fuss we’d be in a terrible state.

It defies belief that so many people on mumsnet want schools to close, and sympathise with teachers who want to shut schools.

》This, 100%

Teachers are key workers, just wear a mask / face shield like every other shop worker or NHS worker and you will be as protected as us. Shop workers may have dozens of different people passing them each day and as an NHS employee, i have to get very close up to some patients in their homes and often they are not wearing a mask. Demand priority vaccination and supply of facemasks for youselves but not closing schools

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 15:13

Why has it taken the unions until now to act

The new strain and the overwhelmed hospitals.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:13

@FrippEnos i have defended teachers all along but its pretty immature to accuse gp's of not pulling there weight and make out only teachers have has a hard time
Thats when you start to loose public sympathy

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:13

@noblegiraffe but that was all apparent just before we broke up?

Flaxmeadow · 02/01/2021 15:15

Flax weren't you calling for a full National lockdown not so long ago. Apologies if I have mixed you up with someone else.

Yes I do very much believe in lockdown, I believe in the science of it and it's all we have ATM, but I also see schools, especially primary, as a vital service

FrippEnos · 02/01/2021 15:15

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

So it is only teachers that can be generalised against, good to know.

Well dodged by the way.

AaronPurr · 02/01/2021 15:16

How do you have a full lockdown if schools are open? Confused

lovelemoncurd · 02/01/2021 15:17

I want teachers in pupil referral units to take class action against the government. They have knowingly sent them into work day after day with kids that don't distance don't wear masks. Absolutely no defences for these teachers. No PPE. Like lambs to the slaughter. Everyday since March they have been sent into this work situation. It's diabolical!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:17

@noblegiraffe so what are unions requesting and what is practical
To implement , i mean realistically hospitals would like fo run at 50%!capacity and then they could space out more but thats not practical so they have just ppe and not always full like people expect and will often see more than 30 people as well
Would masks make teachers feel safer ? Thats an easy fix , but what else practically ?

toobusytothink · 02/01/2021 15:18

@Flapjak but that is “all” we are asking. Teachers are NOT wanting to shut schools. We are simply asking for them to be made as safe as eg shops. We are not allowed to wear masks, we don’t have the space to ensure social distancing. We are nowhere on the list for vaccines. So before slagging is all off I suggest you get your facts straight. Seriously you are the type of person who will actually make me think - did it I don’t want to teach your child. But I will do because I love me job ...

MsMeNz · 02/01/2021 15:19

I really hope this works. Numbers are about to get scary for a month for so. Can't be having school kids adding to that spread to teachers and parents and visa versa. Even though it's a pain at home me trying to homeschool three kids that aren't self sufficient and holding down a full time job can be challenging I've done it before and I can do it again 💪 at least for a month to two to get through this tough patch, Hopefully one last big one! Assuming they can get the vaccine programmes to where it needs to be!

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 15:19

Third post on the thread, donewith from the link in the first post.

Here’s what the NAHT want, which all sounds eminently reasonable.

We will be continuing to argue throughout the weekend that government needs to change its approach if we have any chance of success at keeping schools open to all pupils and not just for the most vulnerable and those of key workers.

The government’s current approach is too simplistic and is damaging education. It is time to properly respond to what professional educators need rather than how attractive a headline may read.

The government is alienating the profession, failing children and being reckless with the safety of the whole school community.

We believe that the government should take the following steps:

Move all schools to home learning for a brief and determined period for most children.

During this time, proper support to make the home learning experience as good as it can be should be provided. That includes technology and learning resources but also flexibility for school leaders to respond to their circumstances. A centralised, prescriptive approach is too constrained.

The government should then establish a properly organised, resourced and funded mass testing regime for schools in place of the botched DIY system currently being imposed.

Work should be undertaken with school leaders and PHE to establish and agree new covid-related safety measures in schools during the temporary restriction.

Urgently review its approach to special schools, APs and Maintained Nursery Schools to protect all staff and pupils in those communities.

Immediately prioritise vaccinations in education.

Then agree an orderly return.

But surely that would just prolong the agony for the sake if a few weeks or blended learning with social distancing?
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 15:20

@FrippEnos I have defended and backed teachers but I don't see turning on each other very helpful
