Good news.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 11:34

Here’s what the NAHT want, which all sounds eminently reasonable.

We will be continuing to argue throughout the weekend that government needs to change its approach if we have any chance of success at keeping schools open to all pupils and not just for the most vulnerable and those of key workers.

The government’s current approach is too simplistic and is damaging education. It is time to properly respond to what professional educators need rather than how attractive a headline may read.

The government is alienating the profession, failing children and being reckless with the safety of the whole school community.

We believe that the government should take the following steps:

Move all schools to home learning for a brief and determined period for most children.

During this time, proper support to make the home learning experience as good as it can be should be provided. That includes technology and learning resources but also flexibility for school leaders to respond to their circumstances. A centralised, prescriptive approach is too constrained.

The government should then establish a properly organised, resourced and funded mass testing regime for schools in place of the botched DIY system currently being imposed.

Work should be undertaken with school leaders and PHE to establish and agree new covid-related safety measures in schools during the temporary restriction.

Urgently review its approach to special schools, APs and Maintained Nursery Schools to protect all staff and pupils in those communities.

Immediately prioritise vaccinations in education.

Then agree an orderly return.

Very encouraging that ASCL also joining them. After success of London borough councils this all feels v promising. Could we FINALLY perhaps be getting the government to put into place what we need for schools to be open safely?!

Glad that unions are finally sticking up for teachers. Let's hope it succeeds and schools can be made safer.

LadyPenelope68 · 02/01/2021 11:37

Brilliant to see the Headteacher’s now being this active 👍

Char2015 · 02/01/2021 11:40

We are also awaiting an announcement from NEU. So glad unions are taking action.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 11:42

The legal route is great, far less antagonistic than strikes and the DfE will be required to show its working on school safety. Which it doesn't have.

Ihateme · 02/01/2021 11:42

How is this going to be resolved before Monday though?

IloveJKRowling · 02/01/2021 11:43

Very pleased to see this.

WonderingFree · 02/01/2021 11:44

Sounds sensible to me - schools are not safe full stop and the Governments approach of sending primary school children in without proper PPE, risk assessments, long term safety planning or prioritisation for vaccine is reckless, so glad for this action.

Elephant4 · 02/01/2021 11:44

That is brilliant. I feel such relief reading that.

Gosh it makes me realise even more what a bunch of useless feckless charlatans are in charge- if a letter of that sort needs to be written to them.

IloveJKRowling · 02/01/2021 11:45

How is this going to be resolved before Monday though?

This is a good question although presumably this action from unions may give HTs a bit more support in going against government and closing for a week or so?

Achristmaspudsskidu · 02/01/2021 11:46

I’m glad the NAHT are being proactive.

All anyone wants is for schools to open in a way that is as safe as they can be for staff, children and the community.

Gavin Williamson should be spending his weekend in talks with unions and heads, to discuss practical measures that can be taken.

Where is he?

Itisasecret · 02/01/2021 11:46

Good and I like the focus on keeping schools open for all F2F, safely. The quicker they listen, the quicker that can be done.

Achristmaspudsskidu · 02/01/2021 11:46

@Ihateme

How is this going to be resolved before Monday though?
That depends on whether Gavin Williamson bothers to engage.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/01/2021 11:47

All sounds very sensible.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 11:47

Us4Them will be positively frothing at the mouth I imagine when they find this out.

@Ihateme this is a good point- it won't be. However the release mentions that they've had questions from members about staff citing section 44 which suggests that quite possibly it will be teachers at ground level who will bring some schools to a standstill before the legal proceedings will.

The release also mentions the school risk assessments and acknowledges that in light of latest developments (community case numbers etc) these may now indicate it is not safe to open the school. This sounds to me like an indirect go ahead to members to have confidence to keep their school shut if they can't prove with the RA that it is safe to open. I could be reading too much into it all though.

I support them. Not a teacher.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 11:49

Yes I think the headteachers are well aware of the plans for a section 44 walkout.

We know that the unions all worked together on that joint statement before Christmas so this action may well be co-ordinated.

Char2015 · 02/01/2021 11:49

I think it's great they asking for education staff to have the vaccine, but when NHS staff are still struggling to get theirs because of low supply what chances do the teachers have. Everything else they are asking for, should have been done from the start of the academic year when students returned. We should not be 4 months down the line and still asking for safety in our schools. Poor gov we have.

inquietant · 02/01/2021 11:50

In particular the idea that you would no longer isolate but have those useless LF tests was really frightening me.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 11:52

@inquietant me too- it seemed utter lunacy to even suggest it!

Absolutely-that is a huge huge concern for me. If they scrapped that policy and continue with self isolation for close contacts, I would be much happier.

There are some simple changes that could be made which would keep schools open in a much safer way than is being proposed but the government won’t engage with heads or unions. They won’t even answer letters, let alone have a discussion about what might work.
