Please explain secondary school testing

In tier 4 our secondary school says testing of week 11th,then testing for close contacts thereafter.I think I’m going mad but I thought kids were being tested EVERY week so as to pick up asymptomatic cases, although from what I’ve read on here these LAteral flow tests miss 30-50% of cases. What’s the point in that.
About to have a Barney with hubby about sending 12 yr old back to his weekend football club. All he says is outdoor kids football is still allowed! Aahhh

I think the point is that it picks up more cases than no testing at all.

FippertyGibbett · 01/01/2021 09:11

My tier 4 school has sent an email saying that they don’t yet know for definite what the testing will be, so no info has been given yet.

2 separate things.

First they want to test them all as they start back. This would perhaps pick up those who are positive and who might not have otherwise been tested.

Second, they want to stop sending close contacts of positive cases home to isolate, instead they will go to school every day and take one of the unreliable tests. If it says negative they stay in school.

What @EndoplasmicReticulum said. Also, outdoor football is fine surely, unless you have an extremely vulnerable family member. My girls are back in dance this weekend

Our school is doing two tests before kids come back, then testing close contacts. But I think it’s all pretty much still up in the air. When they emailed yesterday they hadn’t actually received any tests yet although obviously school begins Monday.

InTheLongGrass · 01/01/2021 09:16

I dont think the details are available yet.
IMO, testing as a screening to pick up some asymptomatic or pre symptomatic cases is a good thing. I thought I'd heard weekly for staff and vunerable, not for everyone. It might depend on how many test kits are available!
Replacing isolation of close contacts with lateral flow testing is bonkers.

FWIW, we are going back to football training, but not tennis (indoor).

borageforager · 01/01/2021 09:17

I’m sending my kids to any of their activities that remain open (not all of them). None of us are vulnerable. Numbers are low. They’ve spent months missing out on these things, I’m not rushing to keep them home when they don’t need to be.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 01/01/2021 09:17

It's the second one that's the problem.

Perihell · 01/01/2021 09:28

Agree ,my son had to isolate because of school close contact in Dec, the child was in school all week feeling groggy and we didn’t get told till the Friday they were positive, just stayed at school waiting for result. Will definitely be keeping him off if contact again
And our sons footie team have never followed grassroots rules for COVID.or the parents when spectating they’re all mates with each other.
